I started with Heinz57 by deciding to find a 2nd dog to be a companion to our 12 yo black lab who was slowing down with her age. A colleague was fostering a new rescue and I immediately was interested in pursuing an adoption. After a thorough home visit to confirm compatibility, we completed the adoption for Coco who soon became an active playmate for our lab. I realized rescue animals offer many options that far exceed expectations. I have started volunteering for Heinz57, as driver transporting dogs (and occasionally cats) from overcrowded shelters considering euthanasia to no-kill rescue programs for adoption and a opportunity for a family life. I'm amazed at the range of animals needing help ... puppies just new to a difficult world, aging dogs deserving a few more years of support and caring, or even a pure breed whose owner died or is no longer wanted. I'm also impressed with the dedication by staff and numerous volunteers giving their time with patience and empathetic caring. We are in a world with innumerable people needs, but it is also important to address ancillary needs recognizing interconnected issues and importance of achieving a balance in caregiving.
