Causes: Environment, Natural Resources Conservation & Protection
Mission: We are citizen volunteers who support the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, which borders both sides of the Mississippi River from Minnesota to Illinois, including Wisconsin and Illinois. It is 260 miles long, comprises 240,000 acres, and borders four states from Minnesota to Illinois. It receives more than 1 million visits a year, has more than 100 species of fish, and is a major migratory flyway for waterfowl and other birds.
Target demographics: the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge
Direct beneficiaries per year: hundreds of students and adults, 40 developmentally disabled adults, and six agencies.
Geographic areas served: the Mississippi River valley from Wabasha, Minnesota to Trempealeau, Wisconsin
Programs: We offer events such as summer fishing for developmentally disabled adults, ice-fishing for youths and parents, paddling tours in the river backwaters, bus tours to view the tundra swan migration, and more. We've purchased and installed an aquarium and terrarium in a local elementary with at STEM focus so kids could learn first-hand about local, native species. We've recycled 35 miles of fishing line from 35 recycling tubes we installed at boat landings and fishing spots. We help count eagle and heron nests, remove invasive plants, and sponsor river cleanups. We advocate for the Refuge and seek grants that enlarge our impact. And we partner with Refuge staff for nearly all we do, as well as with other organizations.
