I have been donating to them for several years but am becoming concerned that they are not publishing their finances or showing their form 990 - Why are they keeping them secret? Are they hiding something?
Love what they do and as previously said, I have been contributing monies for several years.
I first learned about PROJECT K-9 HERO about a year ago. I was not aware that dogs who had served our country, protecting all of us, were not provided for in retirement. PK9H is dedicated to helping those heroes. I attended an open house at their location and seen how well dogs were cared for, and the time and love they devote to their mission. They are working towards a larger facility to accommodate more of these amazing dogs. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the K-9's who have saved countless lives. I am privileged to help Project K-9 and donate to their mission.
Project K-9 Hero is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing and caring for retired Military Working Dogs who have served our country. These heroic dogs have protected our soldiers and helped to maintain peace and security in our country. They have served tirelessly and with utmost loyalty. However, once their service is over, they often struggle to find homes and receive the care they need. This is where Project K-9 Hero comes in.
The team at Project K-9 Hero is truly inspiring. They are a group of passionate individuals who are committed to making sure that these retired dogs receive the care and love they deserve. They work tirelessly to find these dogs loving homes and provide them with medical care, food, and shelter. The team's passion for dogs is evident in everything they do. They truly believe that every dog deserves a happy and fulfilling life, especially those who have served our country.
Project K-9 Hero is doing an amazing job of supporting these retired Military Working Dogs. It is a wonderful organization that deserves our support and appreciation.
Project K-9 Hero is a wonderful organization that helps provide and care for retired Military Working Dogs that so graciously served our country. The team is an inspiring group of people who's passion for dogs truly shows.
Project K9 Hero is a world-class organization that carries out its mission with extraordinary class and dignity. Their unwavering dedication to our retired K9s is nothing short of inspiring, and I cannot sing their praises enough. If you're looking to support a cause that makes a real difference, look no further than Project K9 Hero.
Project K9 Hero is an incredible organization dedicated to honoring and supporting retired military and police K9s. Many of these courageous canines, through no fault of their own, find themselves without homes or burdened by hefty medical bills. That's where Project K9 Hero steps in, providing crucial assistance to these unsung heroes and alleviating the stress for their handlers.
Having had the privilege of meeting Jason Johnson and the team at Project K9 Hero, I can attest to their genuine passion and dedication. They are some of the most authentic and compassionate individuals you'll ever encounter, working tirelessly to ensure that our four-legged partners receive the care and respect they deserve.
To see what this noble cause does every day to recognize the bravery and commitment of our first responder and military dogs is awe inspiring. Not only patriotic, but a genuine care for the dogs and the people who are partnering in the long term care of these heroes. To be part of this is a "bucket filler" for me and the leadership of the organization are magnetic, passionate, and concentrated on the cause. Lobbying for our government to share in this same recognition of our K9 Heroes is a challenge this organization is willing to take on first hand. As should we all.
This group has been so impressive. I was able to attend one of their events and was very impressed with the care they are providing for their dogs, the help for the handlers and owners and the quality of everything they are doing.
I have been following Project K-9 Hero for many years. The support that they uniquely offer retired MWDs and Police K9s is truly amazing. Each dog and member are cared for as family. I also appreciate the amount of support they offer local communities and nationally to help further serve and spread awareness about the needs of retired working dogs.
Project K9 Hero does amazing work. Speaking from the Police K9 world, far too often, after the K9 is retired, all the medical and food costs fall on the handler. For most handlers, when your K9 is having difficulty performing physically, you look to retire them. This is the time in your K9’s life when their medical costs are going up, and now the handler is expected to pay for them. The average cost of a dual hip replacement for a K9 is $7,000-$14,000, and most pet insurance companies won’t accept a retired Police K9 as a patient. Another great aspect of Project K9 Hero is the rehoming service. Some of the best Police K9’s simply don’t make good house pets. Some are so protective of their handlers; they won’t tolerate other family members being in the same room as their handlers. Some can be a safety issue with handlers’ children. For this reason, without a rehoming option, most of these K9’s would be put down. Project K9 Hero and its supporters are saving the lives of Police and Military working dogs every day.
I follow this on LinkedIn and through a known business contact. It always warms my heart to see the good work that they do taking care of our four-legged service members and four-legged Leo. I’m super grateful that they have this compassion for the health and well-being of canines that serve us and don’t look at them as just a tool. I love their mission.
Project K9 Hero is a worldclass organization and has been an absolute pleasure to work with. Their mission is admirable and they carry it out with extraordinary class and dignity.
I watched an event for Veterans Day in 2023 on Good Morning America that featured Project K-9 Hero and their ability to save and reunite a military working dog with his handler after being separated through military service. Since then, I have been supporting and following Project K-9 Hero and their mission is absolutely incredible. They are working on building new facilities so that they can save more K-9s and I could not be more excited to get involved. This is a wonderful organization with a great team that is truly committed to taking care of our service pups after they have served us - pretty special group here!
I had the opportunity to attend the 3rd Annual Performers for Paws by Project K-9 Hero. In January of 2024. The event itself was awesome, with live music and Bar-B-Que. The presentation of the actual Canine heroes that the non-profit provides for was extraordinary. Having been able to share in that experience with all of the sacrifices that have been made by these animals and their handlers was something I'll never forget. Looking forward to what the future holds for this truly great non-profit!
I had the opportunity to attend the reunification of Military Working Dog Blek and Military K-9 Handler Thomas Watkins on November 10th, 2023. This is just a single example of the great work done by Project K-9 Hero. And, this particular event was broadcast live on Good Morning America!

It is hard not to feel good about the mission of Project K-9 Hero. Protecting those that protect us. Heroic K-9’s that never hesitate to protect our first responders, our military and you, the general public. They deserve to be taken care of post service. Also, when you support one of these K-9 Hero’s you support a veteran or a first responder who would be covering these cost on their own.
I don’t know of a team that has more passion and works harder than the Project K-9 Hero team. I encourage all to explore how donations are used and the level of professionalism that exist throughout the Project K-9 Hero staff and leadership.
Sincerely,

I came across Project K9 Hero, as I am active in supporting organizations in animal welfare, as well as those that support our Military and Law Enforcement. Project K9 Hero stood out for me as an organization that effectively does both. Rehabilitating injured service dogs, providing rehoming opportunities and allowing their handlers/partners to financially support them when they retire are some of the critical support measures they employ. Project K9 Hero maintains a stellar ratio of operating costs to their Programs - the money they raise goes to the cause! As I am selective in who I support, I am proud to be a donor to such a great organization.
Project K9 Hero is the epitome of how our great country should recognize our great heroes, even those on four legs! This organization proactively seeks opportunities to call attention to the efforts these great heroes displayed while on duty. And after retirement, this organization has made it their honor to serve those who served us, by providing quality of life care extension through their retirement. Paragon is proud to support such a worthy cause and we encourage everyone to consider doing the same.
I work with affluent clients and make recommendations regarding their philanthropic support.
Project K-9 Hero checks all our boxes:
Non political, consistent program and revenue growth, low overhead, low ratio of paid staff.
The staff is passionate about their work and this area of need is one that falls through the social services funding net.
It is a great cause with a large need where your support can truly make a difference.
Project K9 Hero means what they say. They truly care about working K9’s throughout the country. I was fortunate enough to have my retired K9, K9 Tek selected as one of their recipients in 2023 after he retired. He suffered from spinal issues and well as severe allergies that required medications everyday. After retirement these finances were required to be covered by me and my family. Jason from Project K9 Hero called me and informed me that Tek was being selected to join the other members of their Hero program. Jason invited us to a fundraiser event in Kenosha, WI where I was able to meet him in person. It was clear the passion he has for Project K9 Hero and all the dogs within the program. Since then I have stayed in touch with Sheena Haller from Project K9 Hero. Sheena is my contact for vet bills whenever Tek needs to get new medications or needs to be seen. She’s always quick to answer her phone and facilitate payment with the vet. K9 Tek and I are very fortunate to be apart of Project K9 Hero. They are dedicated to helping K9’s everyday and I couldn’t be more impressed with their organization and values.

I learned of Project K9 Hero from a friend and the more I’ve learn about what they are doing the more impressed I’ve become. I love how they protect the dogs that protect us without choice. Looking forward to joining them at more events and finding ways to support their efforts.
Project K9 Hero is such an incredible organization. I've had the pleasure of volunteering for them and attending their events over the past couple years. The organization is run by individuals of incredible merit and integrity and I absolutely love what they do for all the military K9' vets. It's wonderful to watch them grow year after year and continue to give undefined compassion and care to all the K9's.
I've attended a couple Project K9 Hero memorials in South Lyon, MI. Such a moving experience. What a great organization that really steps up for service dogs.
My retired explosives K9's medical bills, food and vitamins are cared for by this amazing organization. After 8 years of him working hard I'm not sure I could pay these bills in my own. Thank you Project K9 Hero
This organization is doing amazing things!! The team is made up of incredible change makers looking to enrich the lives of retired K-9 officers and US veterans.
Project K9 Hero is an amazing organization in our eyes. Respecting military and police K9’s that are retired, some with no homes to go to -some at no fault of their own- some with large medical bills that handlers may not be able to afford.
Project K9 Hero is able to step in and offer help to the K9, and in turn taking a lot of stress off of the handler by taking over the medical bills, even food. That means the world to the human when they know their partner will be taken care of and matters.
Getting to meet Jason Johnson and some of his crew at Project K9 Hero reiterated how important it is to care for those that have worked and sacrificed their entire life. They are some of the most real, down to earth people you’d ever want to encounter, and they do it all for the Hero’s. The K9’s.
I've been pleased to know, and work closely with Project K9 Hero for a few years now. Knowing the founder Jason Johnsons background and watching all of the wonderful help this non profit does for the community really makes me smile. I can't count the number of blessings I've personally witnessed from this great group. Many of our nations furry heroes would more than likely had to be put down, if not for PK9Hs generosity because of the expensive medical bills they sometimes end up with.
Aside from that, they have been a leader in law making process working hard with lawmakers, and leaders to change and write laws for these amazing animals!
As a veteran business owner with a brand that gives back I have had the honor to work with many great organizations.
Project K-9 Hero is definitely one of my favorites. I have gotten to know their staff & see their facility up close and personal. The work they are doing in taking care of & honoring our 4 legged warriors is very admirable and truly needed. I would highly recommend you support Project K-9 Hero and the important services and care they are providing for our heroes.
Cheers and Semper Fidelis,

As a law enforcement officer, I have a full understanding of the K9 program. Through out my career, our department had 3 K9 who all needed significant vet care after they were retired. There was such an extraordinary need for help with vet bills for K9s before K9 Hero was established. This program helps handlers continue to give retired K9s the retired life that they have earned. I have never been more intrigued by a program that truly cares personally for each and every K9 and the outcome of their life. This program is filling a necessary need and I am so impressed that someone stepped up to help fill this gap.
Project K-9 Hero does so much for our retired 4 legged hero’s! Once a dog retires from military or law enforcement, those agencies stop paying for those dogs. Project K-9 Hero steps in to take care of those dogs after retirement. Wether it’s paying for medical treatments, placing them in loving homes, or worse case, death benefits, PK9H is there no matter what. They are even trying to get laws made to protect and take care of our 4 legged hero’s! I can’t sing their praises enough!
Project K9 hero represents more than the love of dogs. They represent honor, integrity, and respect for not just our soldiers but the K9’s standing by their side. Project K9 Hero is truly a non for profit organization that is truly there to help. Thank you.
I absolutely love what project k-9 hero is doing for these heroic working dogs who keep us ,our streets, our schools, our soldiers, and our officers safe and the fact that someone is there to take care of their needs when they retire and or have nowhere to go is just amazing.
Keep up the great work PK9H
Project K-9 Hero really cares for the heroes entrusted in their care. Each dog is special and treated with the utmost care and love. The Team at PK9H is fantastic, each team member knows the reason they are there and ensures the best.
Our adoption of K9 Rex was wonderful. The process from the time we arrived on site to arrival at home was flawless. Follow up communication has been great after adopting K9 Rex.
This organization spends donated money wisely; K9 Heroes are the mission.
I’ve attended this event several years in a row. It’s truly moving to hear the stories of each student who receives the scholarship and knowing this is donated by Project K9 Hero in memory of Jodi Johnson is so special. I also have a huge passion for our military working dogs and having these events held at the Michigan War Dog Memorial is neat as you get to be apart of the working dogs memorial history and you’re supporting young adults who are accepting scholarships for their academic future. Look forward to attending every year.
I became aware of Project K9 Hero (PK9H) thru the Michigan War Dog Memorial, where my dog Kela and I are members of the Salute Team. Project K9 Hero is an amazing organization. The founder, Jason Johnson, works tirelessly to honor our retired Police and Military Working Dogs. When these dogs retire, they have no medical insurance and sometimes don't even have a home. When a dog joins the Project K9 Hero Pack the organization pays for medical expenses, which is often thousands of dollars each; they provide rehabilitation and retraining and when possible, find the perfect home to adopt them; if the dogs are deemed not adoptable, they live a comfortable life and enjoy retirement at the PK9H Rehab and Rehoming Facility. In addition to all of that, Jason has also worked with Congress to try to change the laws regarding care of Military Working Dogs (MWD); He travels the country with his K9 ambassadors educating people about MWD and Police K9 Officers; PK9H offers scholarships to young people going into the medical or veterinarian fields; there is an annual Project K9 Hero Awards show to recognize our nation's top performing Police and Military K-9 Heroes. PK9H was able to generate $3.8 Million in Total Donations with only 5% going to administrative costs in comparison to the typical non-profit having 15% going to administrative costs. Like I said previously, Project K9 Hero and its founder Jason Johnson are just amazing!
Project K9 Hero takes care of our four-legged warfighters and homeland heroes in their retirement, after their dutiful and loyal protection and service to our citizens and country. No other organization steps in the way PK9H does to help pick up the huge expenses associated with treating these dogs with the proper medical care they deserve and the benefits they have earned. Without PK9H, these dogs would suffer, their handlers and adopted families would experience financial strain, and ultimately many of these dogs would not get to enjoy a retirement at all. As a professional who works with military working dogs and law enforcement canines, I am so appreciative that organizations like PK9H exist and fill this critical gap.
I started following Project K9 Hero on social media a few years ago. Over that time I have seen them do great things. In January 2022 I had a chance to visit the facility and meet some of the staff. Their 100% dedication to the mission of Project K9 Hero is indisputable. Jason and his staff treat every dog that comes into their program as one of their own. They treated me like I was family while I was there, and they still do. Jason and his staff work very hard to give these heroes the retirement they deserve after completing their mission. Project K9 Hero takes in dogs that would otherwise be euthanized due to behavior issues or lack of an adopter. They also provide rehab and rehoming services. If a dog cannot be adopted they are able to live there at the Project K9 Hero facility where the staff cares for them. Two of the pictures I am posting with this review are of K9 Rosso, from the USAF. K9 Rosso is one of these dogs. He is unadoptable due to behavioral issues. Project K9 Hero took him in and he gets to live out a great retirment now. A week ago my family and I got to meet another Project K9 Hero member, K9 Arlo. K9 Arlo is an example of another way Project K9 Hero helps retired military and police K9s. K9 Arlo was injured in the line of duty. He was adopted by his handler after he was retired from service. Project K9 Hero provides food and covers medical expenses so the adopter and/or handler do not have to. We will continue to support Project K9 Hero and their mission, especially after I was able to experience what they do first hand. Project K9 Hero really does protect those who protected us.
I have had the opportunity to work with Project K9 Hero’s as a volunteer for the canine biathlon. I am also a donor and follow all the amazing work they are doing. This work range from taking in our four legged hero’s that have been retired, to supporting handlers in covering medical and other cost associated with talking care of their dog partners. All of this work is done by an amazing team from project K9 Hero’s. They are second to non in their care and compassion as well so great to work with.

Project K-9 Hero is an amazing program which covers the needs of the retired military, law enforcement, and first responder K-9s who have served our communities. Without this charity, the costs of medical care, food, and end of life services fall to the handler after the K9 is retired, and for those who cannot retire to the handler (the handler is deployable, has been assigned another K-9 partner, does not have the private funds required for the K-9's level of care required, etc) some of these K-9 heroes face euthanization if an adopter is not found. K9 Chief of the Moses Lake PD was retired after losing an eye and with remaining fragments in his jaw after being shot in the line of duty. K9 Arlo of the Thurston County Sheriff's Office was retired after being shot in the line of duty, and with the financial support of PK9H he was able to retire to his handler and continues to be active in community outreach. Military Working Dog Rosso of the US Air Force protected two presidents, served in ten different secret service missions, and deployed to an air base in Al Qatar where he supported thousands of service members. After retirement Rosso received the Commendation Metal, but was determined unadoptable and scheduled for euthanization due to aggressive behavior, and his handler was unable to adopt due to an infant at home. PK9H stepped in to accept Rosso into the program, where he will live out his retirement at the Project K-9 Hero Rehabilitation and Rehoming Facility. There he receives one on one attention from Founder, Jason Johnson, who has extensive experience training and handling working dogs globally. Without these services through Project K-9 Hero, Chief, Arlo, Rosso, and the other 177 K-9 heroes in the program may not have received the medical, rehabilitation, and adoption services to live out their lives in retirement.
A few years ago, I read a book titled, "K-9 Flash Becomes a Hero," to my son who was four years old at the time. It was a beautiful true story about a dog named Flash who had run out of options but was given a second chance at life as a Police K-9. The book was written by Jason Johnson, founder of Project K-9 Hero, and the story had a profound impact on my young son, quickly becoming a bedtime story favorite in our house. As a result, I began following Project K9 Hero, and over the years, I have watched them grow into a nationwide nonprofit that is truly changing the world for police K-9s and military working dogs, as well as their handlers, by providing food and medical assistance in retirement. If you wish to become inspired, follow the stories of the various program members told by Project K9 Hero on their social media pages. Reading the stories of these heroes and everything being done to support them is an amazing part of my week. It's because of these stories that I have been a loyal donor these past three years, and I cannot think of an organization that is more professional or deserving of my support. Years later, my son continues to watch this organization and is now dedicated to serving our country as a K9 handler someday due to their outstanding leadership in the nonprofit world.
