Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Disaster Aid, Search & Rescue Squads

Mission: Taos Search and Rescue (Search and Rescue Taos Inc) is an all-volunteer, 501 (c)(3) non-profit community organization with high standards of professionalism and service. We operate year-round in all of the off-road areas surrounding Taos, New Mexico, throughout the state of New Mexico, and occasionally into Southern Colorado. Our team searches in all seasons. We search for lost hikers, climbers, hunters, campers, children, people with Alzheimer's or dementia, skiers, snow-mobilers, etc. We rescue persons injured in back-country settings, which include the mountains, the high desert, and the Rio Grande Gorge. We are also called in for urban off-road searches. Our primary deployment is through the New Mexico State Police. On-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, we provide training for all areas of expertise required on a mission. This includes litter packaging, medical scenarios, low and medium angle rescue, avalanche training, swiftwater training, search for downed aircraft, communications, navigation with map and compass, use of GPS, and computer search technologies. New volunteers are always welcome to apply. We train and employ the following 10 Specialized Search Units: Base and Incident Command, Ground, Medical, K-9, Technical, Drone, Bike, OHV, Swiftwater, and Winter Skills. We operate a Mobile Command Unit and 4-Wheel Drive Response Unit. If you are looking for a way to serve your community, consider joining Taos Search and Rescue.

During the summer of 2018, my family and I were hiking in the Carson National Forest near Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico. We were approximately 3 miles up an extraordinarily steep trail when my wife slipped on a rock, fell, and broke her right fibula. Cell phone service was down to one bar, and (as often happens there in the summer) a violent thunderstorm was approaching. Luckily I was able to communicate with 911, which referred the situation to Taos Search and Rescue (TSAR). TSAR responded immediately and their team literally RAN straight up the trail to assist my family and I. Long story short, TSAR had my wife stabilized within minutes, and they safely transported her down the mountain to a waiting ambulance. I cannot say enough good things about this amazing organization - they literally saved us. Please consider a donation.
