Second Wind Dreams has helped fulfill thousands of dreams for those living in elder care communities. This organization provides tremendous support and recognition to their members, volunteers, and donors. In addition to their Virtual Dementia Tour, created by P.K. Beville, and dreams program, their annual Gifts of Light 2014 provided Holiday gifts and visits to 1000+ nursing home elders. From my first hand experience, these elders were overwhelmed with surprise and joy. I continually heard, "Thank you so much!" and "How was I chosen?" These elders who normally receive no visits, felt truly blessed, loved, and remembered.
I first came upon Second Wind Dreams when I was searching for sensitivity training programs to use in my own organization in Israel. The Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT) fit the bill exactly and I quickly made contact with Second Wind Dreams to arrange for personal training in conducting the VDT. I can only use superlatives to describe the fantastic work that Second Wind Dreams does to bring meaning to the lives of the elderly, through the organization's many volunteers around the world. Working with the founder of Second Wind Dreams was an exceptional experience for me and gave me the inspiration and initiative to push ahead with helping provide elders with the dignity and compassion they deserve.
As a volunteer for Second Wind Dreams, I have learned a lot about the elders living in nursing homes. I've learned that the things they desire most are often so simple to make happen. Every elder I have met has had their own story to tell and parts of every story have touched my heart in ways that can't be explained. Making sure an elder has their favorite candy or being a part of their dream to see a loved one when it finally happens is something you won't forget. From the smallest to the biggest dream, every one is important and adds to the fabric of the elder's life. Begin a part of this organization has give me a new mission and a reason to get up every morning. I head to the nursing home in anticipation of what is going to take place - every day is different - every day is exciting. It doesn't get any better than that!
I have been Volunteering with Second Wind Dreams for just over a year now and it has been the most fulfilling thing I have ever volunteered to do. I have experienced meeting some of the greatest Elders and seeing their dreams be fulfilled no matter how small. The Virtual Dementia Tour is one of the most enlightening and educating programs I have ever had the privilege to be a part of. If you are looking for a heart filling over flowing with love experience...this is the one for you whether it be as a volunteer or give a gift you can't go wrong! I have cried with, laughed with and enjoyed every elder I have had the pleasure to meet. As a Dream weaver you actually get to know the elder and find out about those things they wish they could have or would have done, or maybe that person they wish they could see again. My favorites are the dreams of having a new pair of slippers, warm socks, home cooked meal, simple things that most of us take for granted. The work that SWD does is beyond anything you will ever experience. Volunteer.....I do and will continue to do so as long as I am able!!!
Second Wind Dreams has helped us change the culture of our Eldercare Community. I cannot express enough thanks to this organization for their support, training and assistance in making the dreams of our elders come true! Staff morale has improved, family and staff connection is exceptional, and our elders are the happiest I have ever seen them. I highly reccomend this program to every eldercare community! If you are a potential donor to this organization, please know that your contribution goes directly to making the dreams of elders come true. Fantastic organization!!!
