Sound Experience owns and operates the beautiful schooner Adventuress; a grand, wooden vessel designated a National Historic Landmark. The mission of SE is to educate and inspire those who come onboard to make a difference for the health and future of Puget Sound waters and its' marine residents.
Besides the learning experience, people are brought together onboard as a cohesive, living community and it truly provides a transformative experience for all participants. And it is so much fun! The huge sails are raised by everyone onboard while singing sea chanteys. On overnight trips, you really do "swab the decks" in the morning. I brought my young daughter onboard and at 1 am we sat huddled together on deck, on a cool clear night, doing bow watch. It is a place to learn, explore make memories and be connected.
I have been involved with this ship and its' mission for over 3 decades and know that it is deserving of any and all contributions. Through the extreme dedication of a talented executive director and a broad community of supporters, this now 100 year old vessel has undergone 5 years of restoration and is now set to safely and proudly sail our waters for many years to come. Mission: Sound experience sails the historic schooner adventuress to educate, inspire and empower an inclusive community that works to improve our marine environment and celebrates our maritime heritage.
Programs: Youth program delivery the primary work of the schooner adventuress is its on-the-water programs for children and teens from schools and youth groups throughout the puget sound region (and beyond). This year, some 1,019 youth participated in more than 15,000 hours of shipboard education on salish sea environmental stewardship, exploration of maritime career paths and maritime skills training. Partnerships with west sound technical skills center on the kitsap peninsula and port of seattle are working to ensure that young people from diverse backgrounds are getting the opportunity to explore maritime career opportunities under the guidance of experienced shipboard crew and educators.
public access to national historic landmark through a robust membership program that is priced affordably for families and individuals, the organization strives to make its national historic landmark (nhl) ship available to the public. Members sail for free on all public sails and other members of the public can purchase single-use tickets. The 1913 133-ft adventuress is one of only two nhl sailing ships still in active operation as a uscg-licensed commercial vessel on the west coast. This year, more than 1,800 youth and adults climbed aboard for 3-hour public sails where they raised the sails, took the helm and sailed as they did a century ago.
maritime historic preservation following a decade of restoration totaling $1. 3m, the organization is preparing for the final phase of restoration the capstone deck project scheduled to begin in october 2018. Funds for the deck include a major grant from wa state's heritage capital projects fund where adventuress was the top-ranked heritage project in the state. These funds, along with private funding, will be used to complete the deck by spring 2019. This year, the ship began an extensive repower (oct 2017) with public and private funds that included the installation of new, cleaner diesel technology engine funded by the epa/puget sound clean air agency. All expenditures are currently being capitalized.
