I grew up speaking Spanish in my house. School was always hard for me right from the start. During my elementary years, my family moved four times, before finally returning to Rhode Island. I was put on an IEP , and began Special Education classes. I've struggled to read and write the whole time. I graduated from the Providence Schools not able to read or write. When I began at RITES, I was so nervous, but really hoped it would help me. I was really frustrated. I have learned a lot. When I was in school, it seemed that what I was taught "didn't stick with me." The Wilson program & Deb taught me to use "tapping" each sound. Next, I started to read syllables . The Magnet Board was really helpful. We used that almost every session. I was so excited when I started to read signs. Now, I can read & write! I've read two books now! They are part of the Noah Text Series. I'm going to read #3 book at home. During my time with Deb, I learned the Sight Words, too. We would review some every few sessions. Now I can read & write! Because of my success each session, I looked forward to our meetings. I know that I have learned social skills in working with Deb. I was so shy when I met her. My next goal is to learn how to drive, & then get a job. I've never had one, & I'm 26. I am hoping for more time with Deb. I know there's so much that I could still learn.
I am a senior in high school. RITES paired with my reading tutor Paige, in 2020. When we first started, I struggled a lot with reading comprehension and keeping focused, but Paige was super patient and always found ways to make it easier for me to understand. She always encouraged me to keep trying.
Over time, my reading got better and I am more comfortable. Paige is really kind, funny, and makes learning feel less like a chore. She’s always been there to help me, even when I was frustrated or ready to give up. If you ever need help with reading, I would 100% recommend Paige. She’s awesome!
We have been working with Marilyn for almost three years now. She is kind, knowledgeable, timely and an advocate for our children with dyslexia. She also holds a great ability to maintain my children’s attention throughout the entire session. They know they will learn a lot and have fun doing it!” Katelyn and Jason Andrew
I have been working as a RI Tutorial Dyslexia Tutor for many years. Lisa and Halley are wonderful employers and I have found that our educational philosophies are perfectly matched. By providing high quality, targeted intervention and support while meeting the students and families where they are has been very rewarding. I always tell people that I have the best part time job in the world. Why? I say this as I am able to provide targeted intervention while building lasting relationships with my students and families. I have several former students who keep in touch and update me about their lives. Nothing makes me happier or prouder than knowing that the support I was able to give these students has benefitted them as they make their ways in the world. I feel well supported with resources and a listening ear, when needed as I work with my students. I am delighted to share my thoughts about this outstanding organization!

I have been a teacher, a reading specialist and a reading, writing, study skills, SAT, Orton Gillingham and ELL tutor with RITES for many years. I work with all ages of students from elementary school to adult learners. I love working with RITES and would never chose to tutor elsewhere. The agency directors, Lisa and Halley, take a hands on personal approach with each family. They are readily available to support families and tutors, knowledgeable about resources and committed to providing the best services possible. I have recommended RITES to many families over the years and will continue to do so. I am proud to be a RITES tutor.
Marilyn Salisbury
I have been working with Marilyn since 2023. My goal is to have a really good understanding of reading and writing so I can get into a great college and get my dream job. I like working one on one with my tutor because it gives me time and attention. I also like that Marilyn gives me honest feedback about my work to help me to improve. I like having the time to learn about words and word parts. Honestly, everything that we do has been wonderful. For sure, I have grown as a reader and writer since we have been working together.
We cannot say enough wonderful things regarding RI Tutorial & Educational Services. In particular, Miss Paige!! She is amazing!! We have been going weekly for tutoring sessions for the past year. Our little one struggles with dyslexia and thus has struggled in the public school system. Miss Paige is patient, kind and very instrumental in assisting to overcome our learning disabilities. The progress shown with our little one is very evident and we plan to stay with RITES for as long as they will have us!! Thank you...Thank you!!
Lisa and Halley have been quietly making inroads into enlightening communities on behalf of students with dyslexia…and their voices, RITES’ voices, have become essential pieces for ‘good.’ Through the past 16 years, I have been proud and honored to have been a part of this movement. Bravo, ladies, for all you do!!!

My grandson has benefited from the caring attitudes and educational expertise of RITES teachers during the past three summers, first, as a private student, and later, in the intensive Orton-Gillingham five week program. As a struggling first grader in a public school, Adam did not receive help that reflected an understanding of his learning style. He needed instructors who could provide a multisensory approach to teaching decoding and comprehension skills, as well as strategies for overcoming his language-based learning problems. As he received encouragement and experienced appropriate teaching methods from his RITES teachers, he began to believe that he COULD learn, and, after the first summer, he started thinking of himself as a successful student. I have been so impressed by the commitment of each of Adam's instructors to understanding and addressing his learning issues, and to fostering his positive self-esteem. Adam and I are both so happy that we discovered the RITES magic!
I earned my O.G certification a couple of years back and wanted to use it with kids outside my own community. RITES gave me the opportunity, and I became one of their O.G. tutors. I enjoy working with my families and especially like working for RITES. They are organized and quickly respond to our or our families' needs. I am so proud to work for an organization that works hard to deliver evidence-based instruction.
I have been working on math with Ms. Sandy for a few years. Ms. Sandy has helped me understand math much more. Because of Ms. Sandy's help I am much more confident in my math work as compared to a few years ago. Ms. Sandy always makes sure that I understand the skill that I'm working on, so we can move on to the next one. I now get better grades in math because of Ms. Sandy's help. I enjoy working with Ms. Sandy because she makes learning math fun. Ms. Sandy does not only care about my my math work, she also cares about me as a person.
For years, many Met had been connected to RITES for supporting their own children with reading support. Additionally, our special education team brought RITES tutors in to work with a few students. When we looked for the best use of our ESSER I, II and III funds to support students, RITES was the first organization we called. They have been so supportive, flexible, and creative problem solvers with us. They adapted grouping, reporting information and screening that worked best with our school. Furthermore, they not only helped us support students directly with excellent tutors and tutoring, Lisa helped us create a strategy and process for serving more students in a more complete way. RITES is an excellent partner that provides top level interventions. They will continue to be our first call.
Through our ESSER grant funding, my school was fortunate to have the opportunity to engage in a multi-year partnership with RITES to support the literacy needs of our students. As coordinator of this partnership for my school, I worked closely with a number of RITES tutors. I was consistently impressed by the level of professionalism, dedication, and expertise that each tutor brought to our campus. Our students loved working with their tutors, and their work was central to the literacy development of so many of our struggling readers. Working with RITES was an absolute pleasure. The level of commitment to and investment in student progress that each tutor brought with them was genuinely inspiring and much appreciated.
Before we started weekly tutoring with RITES, my daughter was struggling to read, write, spell, organize, complete assignments, and study. She was trying her hardest, but her lack of progress was destroying her self esteem and causing tremendous anxiety and depression.
Within a few short weeks, she had a completely different outlook: she knew she could learn when taught the right way! She realized she is smart and capable.
My daughter continues to work with her RITES tutor every week for several years now, and her academic progress and personal growth are both beyond my expectations. She is now thriving, and we know that this is in large part due to her passionate, patient, caring, and skilled RITES tutor.
RITES is a good place if you want to advance your learning skills. Teachers have been kind and helpful and have taught me a lot.
My experience at RITES tutoring center has been very helpful to my learning experience. I recommend people coming here who have struggled with their education journey. From my experience, my coming here has helped me improve my reading and writing skills and the teachers here are really great and help their students here figure out their learning path.
I started tutoring at RITES back in January and I couldn’t be happier. I absolutely love working here. This is an extremely organized and professional business. Lisa and Halley are experts in the field and they always conduct themselves in a polished, knowledgeable manner - but also with compassion and kindness. They cater to the individual needs of each learner, and students make so much progress with tutors, who are also educators. I give them my highest recommendation
Our daughter is successfully launched to college with huge help from Janet, and our son has done really well this year, again with Janet’s help. We truly appreciate everything RITES done for both kids, and I am very much looking forward to working with RITES next year to close out the loop with our son and his final calculus class.
RITES does an amazing job of partnering with other organizations and educators to provide as many students as possible with literacy tutoring services that are evidence-based and aligned to the science of reading and Structured Literacy. As the Founder of Root Literacy Design LLC, I partner with RITES to train teachers and service students. Their dedication to those they serve is incredible.
Imagine a student with reading challenges who initially feels stressful then remarkably confident after one on one tutoring with an experienced teacher. RITES provides this environment, tutoring and support which makes this happen. Confidence breeds future success and this is the true strength of the RITES program.
My son was an avid reader as books began to progressively get more difficult he started to struggle. After my son started seeing a tutor here his reading skills change drastically. He is reading slightly above grade level and enjoys reading. The tutors here are very patient, kind, and understanding.
RITES is an incredible organization that serves the local community throughout Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. As a board member I have the privilege of seeing first-hand the positive impact the RITES tutors have on students with learning challenges. The unique and personalized approach to teaching is what sets RITES apart from other tutoring services.
Often times, the families that need tutoring are the ones that cannot afford it. Rhode Island Tutorial & Education Services fills this void. Through the use of thoroughly developed programming and grant funding, RITES is able to match highly skilled tutors with students in need. RITES not only provides these well trained, dedicated, and passionate tutors, they also provided highly skilled programs that address specific and sometimes complex skill deficits. These nationally recognized programs maximize student learning and thus build confidence and and joy in each learner. The long and noteworthy success record combined with the gratitude of both students and families speaks volumes for this organization.
RITES has truly been the difference in my nephew's life. The staff and educators in this program have given him the confidence to learn. He went from a shy kid who was self-conscious of his skills in math and reading; through the summer program for reading during his first summer and one one-on-one tutoring during his second summer, my nephew has caught up to grade level and actually has the desire to learn every day he walks into his classroom at school. RITES has provided a fun and safe learning space that promotes all the things kids need to excel. They have also identified his style of learning to a tee and adapted their programs to meet his needs. This program has truly given him a second chance at life and for that, we are always grateful.
I been coming to RITES for 5 years. I started in 3 grade with Aimee and she taught me things I need improving with because I was behind in reading. She made school life easier due to her teaching me. For 2 years, I went to RITES summer program. I relearned somethings I needed to shack. The teachers were great and what I learned made my school life easier. With Sandy I am relearning how to pronounce and write multi syllable words with vowel teams and write paragraphs. I have also learned to comprehend stories and answer question about them.
My experience with Aimee in third to sixth grade was fun. She taught me how to comprehend stories and pronounce words. Sandy taught me to relearn what I forgot and define and pronounce multi-syllable words. The summer program I attended at RITES reinforce what I learned earlier so I wouldn't forget it. I would recommend it if you are a kid who needs help. After four years I can say that I wouldn't be where I am now with reading and writing if I hadn't come here.

We can't thank you enough for all of your help this year!! You are really good at what you do and it REALLY made a huge difference, especially in terms of building my child's confidence in math. The clear but laid-back (anti-anxiety) approach of our tutor was just perfect for him... he even said to me, in the car on more than once occasion, "That was really helpful. I wish they would teach like that at my school!"
I can not believe how fast this year went by ! We are extremely happy with Kaylees progress this year ! To see her happy to go to school, not overly stressed about a test but rather very confident about them I can not put a price tag on that ! All credit to Mr. Sean and how he has captivated Kaylee and made learning interesting and FUN !!
My rising fourth grade twins attended RITES this summer, and we are so grateful that they did. Both kids have dyslexia and have struggled in school as the reading demands have increased. Their self-confidence was starting to drop as they compared themselves to their classmates at school. This summer, the classroom at RITES not only helped boost their literacy skills significantly. We also saw their confidence soar as they connected with other kids with similar learning profiles and skills. While they had been avoidant about school in the past, neither of them once showed any reluctance to getting up in the morning and heading to RITES. They had fun, felt good about themselves, and their reading scores showed significant improvement by the end. Now, as fourth graders, they are comfortable visiting their school library, selecting books that work for them, and reading for half an hour at a stretch. This is all thanks to RITES!
My grandson Miguel attended the RITES Summer Program at the Wheeler School this summer. I hope that this program is offered next summer and longer than 3 weeks. Miguel LOVED it. He enjoyed the Rocking Reading and Megahit Math as well as the Wheeler Camp he attended in the afternoon . Just an overall great experience for Miguel. It was a great program with excellent staff. I hope he gets to attend again next summer.

We are so thankful for RITES and the work that they do with kids! After a summer program, we have two young students more prepared for rigorous classroom instruction. They’re even reading… at home… without being told to! Looking forward to working with RITES again.
We were so touched by the responsiveness of Tammah's teacher, Nicole. She was so thoughtful in helping our shy daughter get more comfortable and addressed our concerns quickly and compassionately.
I was connected with the RITES program following my 4th grade daughter's (very late identification) as a student with SLD/Dyslexia, while obsessively trying to find a comprehensive summer program that would meet our family's needs. At the time, my daughter was nearly 2 years behind grade level Reading/Decoding and full of shame and self-doubt. Unfortunately, our public-school district did not offer a structured literacy program for the summer break and did not have any staff who were certified to provide high level, diagnostically & data informed intervention for Dyslexia/SLD/Literacy Delays. I was very concerned about the unavoidable regression as well as her diminishing self-confidence and interest in reading. I had researched many other summer literacy intervention programs, some costing nearly 12K for the same programming with parallel success, designed for Language Based Learning Disabilities and was struggling to find a program which was: (1) still enrolling (2) diverse (3) highly skilled in offering Multi-sensory Orton Gillingham Structured Literacy Programs (4) offering pre & post assessments (5) Flexible, offering both half day and "camp" programming (in partnership with the Hamilton School at Wheeler) as I am a busy single working mother of three children. The RITES Code Breakers Summer Program was a tremendous blessing!
My daughter was naturally apprehensive; however, the staff were understanding, patient, compassionate and welcoming. They helped her learn how to navigate the transition and validated her feelings of anxiety. She immediately connected with the classroom support professional who was warm & kindhearted, tailoring her approach to meet my daughter where she was. She prompted & redirected her in a way that felt encouraging, rather than critical and helped her put her best self forward. It was clear from the beginning that the RITES program was committed to developing secure, responsive relationships with their students. The teacher made her feel special - She even made a song about “being hopeful” after noticing a slogan on my daughter’s favorite sweatshirt that read “High Hopes!”
During the first week of the program I needed to reach out to discuss observations about my daughter's perception being very negative and impacting her ability to invest in the academic day. I was worried that because she felt she “wasn’t good enough,” that she believed that other people had the same opinion of her. I knew this wasn’t the case, but it still needed to be resolved. The program director listened intently with an authentic interest in problem solving and providing my child what she needed in order to be able to succeed, even if that meant modifying their delivery. I was astonished with their flexibility and ability to adapt! Not only did they listen to my experience, but they implemented the suggested interventions immediately (as well as contributing their own!) and when my daughter came home that afternoon she remarked that she "read two pages out-loud to the whole class and had the BEST day ever!"
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, who spent years working with/within Special Education I have never experience such dedicated, skilled and highly competent educators then the staff at the RITES Code Breaker’s Program.
RITES pre and post assessment process was comprehensive and through. They even prepared a summary of their observations for me to bring to my child's PPT team. They were able to identify patterns in 1 hour of assessment that the public school had not noticed after 4 years of educating my child.
During the program, my daughter was able to improve her board comprehension and fluency. She began volunteering to read out-loud without prompting! She drastically improved her OG phonemic awareness skills. Her words per minute rate for common and uncommon text improved. With regards to her writing; her spelling, punctuation and use of proper capitalization improved. Academics aside, my child entered Middle School with a sense-of-self, pride in her abilities and confidence that I was worried had vanished. She was actually looking forward to working with her Literacy Team and no longer feels “different” needing to receive additional instruction or participating in a small group. I am so thankful for RITES. I could not be more satisfied with the experience my family had this summer with the RITES Code Breaker’s Program at Hamilton School and would gladly welcome the opportunity to speak with any guardians who are considering using this valuable program. Next summer, BOTH of my twins will attend, and we are already looking forward to it!
Madison loved the program and can’t wait to go back next year. I’m so happy she enjoyed herself and was able to improve her learning. She looked forward to going to your program every day and said the kids were kind and friendly. I can’t say thank you enough!
I joined the staff for the RITES Summer program this year. I work as a school nurse during the academic year, but was looking for a summer program to get involved with. As a parent of a child who struggles tremendously with reading, I’m constantly looking for programs that are not only educational, but fun and inclusive. I was blown away by this program. The educators and support staff did an amazing job with the students and the students came in excited and ready to learn every day. I saw so much improvement in each of these students and I watched their confidence grow everyday. I’m looking forward to getting my son involved with RITES and looking forward to his participation in the program next summer!
I am writing to share my experience working with Rhode Island Tutorial and Educational Services this summer. I was hired by RITES as a Orton Gillingham certified dyslexia practitioner to teach struggling readers this summer. My experience with the organization from beginning to end was extremely professional, well thought out and well executed. It is clear that RITES is one of very few organizations in Rhode Island with the expertise and understanding of how to truly help children with reading challenges. As an educator, I was given ample support and resources and guidance on how to best achieve success with my students in a 5 week period. The students grew both academically and in confidence over the summer and it was wonderful to see them thrive in an environment that was tailored to their needs. The parents/caregivers were given ample feedback and concrete data to show the progress their child had made.
There are so many children that would benefit from the services that RITES offers. I cannot stress enough the importance of the work that RITES does and the extreme need for organizations like it in our education system. Everyone I worked with was extremely professional, knowledgable and most of all invested in helping these children. Their area of expertise puts them in a position to guide and help educators be more effective practitioners. I would gladly recommend RITES to any parent or educator looking to find a knowledgable resource and advocate for a child who is struggling to read.
Seeing my 8yr old son struggle with reading and writing and the lack of confidence that it has caused has been heartbreaking, especially this last school year. I found RITES when I was looking for additional help for him. Sarah, Halley and Lisa have been amazing! My son is in the CodeBreakers summer program and it has given him confidence in the skills he has and new tools for his toolbox. Getting him to school was a struggle, but he’s excited to go see Mrs Ford, Ms English and Ms Sarah everyday. I look forward to my son growing and learning with RITES by our side!
Good afternoon Emilia and Lisa,
I just wanted to say thank you so much for make Antonio to have an excellent time this summer. He learned so much academically, but he also had tons of fun.
He was sad last Friday because he wasn’t going to see his teacher and classmates. The teacher was amazing and I couldn’t have not asked for more. She was very lovely and caring with Antonio. We will definitely missed her.
Mrs. Carillo again thanks a lot for make this past weeks to go by so quickly and exciting. Antonio really enjoyed your company and your care.
Have a wonderful rest of the summer!

We have had an excellent relationship with Rhode Island Tutorial & Educational Services (RITES). First and foremost, the staff is great to interact with. They are very friendly, courteous, organized, and prompt. My questions have always been addressed quickly. The program they have designed has been just what our daughter needs to be prepared for the upcoming academic year. She seems to enjoy it. We have been pleased with the ability to get feedback on her experience and growth during the program. We certainly will not hesitate to use RITES again.
Math has certainly been an uphill battle for my son but, the tutor provided by RI Tutorial was so patient with him and gave him the tools to guide him to graduation! (We were with RI Tutorial for 3 yrs)
This organization is really accommodating and responsive to any concerns/postponement of payments when needed.
I'm so happy I found RI Tutorial!
Thank you Halley and Janet :)
I am beyond grateful for the support RITES Tutorial Services has provided our family since learning of our daughter's dyslexia. She has benefited from three amazing summer programs as well as specialized tutoring from highly trained and caring teachers. I have no doubt that the skills she has acquired through RITES has helped her confidence in reading and writing. Her most recent session was two weeks of camp for a summer book club. Her excitement in meeting a published author, her awesome instructor and the friends she made was truly a highlight of her summer and kept her skills fresh to tackle a new academic year. Thank you RITES!!
We had a wonderful experience from the very start at RITES. Very professional and kind organziation. My daughter's tutor really helped her with her Physic's class and as a parent, I felt great relief knowing she was getting the extra attention and guidance she needed to succeed and feel confident with the material. Highly recommend for any student struggling in a class!
Our child has participated in RITES Summer programs for several years. RITES has provided my child with significantly increased confidence starting in he school year. She has always found the Summer programs fun and engaging. Would highly recommend them .
Great experience for our daughter, on-off over last 5 years now.
Every summer is a RITES summer now!
We had the chance to work with a few teachers now and all very well prepared and engaged the child without any problems.
Go RITES!
Thank you for all the help
Theodor
RITES has helped for the past five years. They help me with reading and writing and learning new vowels. They make learning easier for me, and do it in away that I understand. I have had one on one tutoring, and have gone to the summer reading programs. It helps me do better in school. I am able to take the learning tools they provide me and use them in school. My teachers also notice a huge difference. I am thankful that I am involved with RITES. I don't know where I would be in school with out the extra help they provide me. Thank you Jacob.

I am so greatful that Jacob was able to attend the summer reading program. He has learned more in the past 5 weeks, than he has in the past 4 years at school!! His writing and reading skills have greatly improved, and everyday he came home excited about the new things he learned.(so excited he is ready to teach me everything he learned and said he only has 5 weeks to teach me) I have also noticed this program has boosted his self-esteem and confidence level!! I cant thank you and your staff enough for all your hard work and dedication, as well as the people who donate to your organization.
I am a tutor with RITES, and I can't say enough positive things about this organization. As a tutor, I am able to use my expertise and my own judgment, but I am also fully supported in terms of materials, advice, continuing education, and whatever else I might need to make the most of my sessions with students. Serving students with high-quality tutors and programming is their top priority. I also think it's wonderful that students can receive grants to receive tutoring that they might not otherwise be able to afford. I am very proud to be a RITES tutor.
RITES has been such a great resource to our family. Our daughter received 1 on 1 Orton Gillingham tutoring this summer. She absolutely loved her tutor and this helped her feel motivated. Her tutor along with the RITES director, Halley Levenstein, provided such informative feedback which is helping us plan the support services that our daughter needs to succeed. We have valued the time they have taken with us and their advocacy and knowledge to help us navigate the special education process. We have been so fortunate for all their assistance.
My son participated in the one-to-one tutoring program at the Wheeler School camp over the summer, and we were very pleased with the program. Despite the fact that he sometimes struggles to engage over the school year, my son was very receptive to the program and reported it being "fun." I really appreciated the great communication including a very helpful progress report provided at the end of the session that I can pass on to my child's teacher in the fall. The director was also willing to have several conversations and exchange multiple emails with me over the course of the session related to supporting him at home and identifying other resources. We will definitely plan to do the program again if he needs additional support next summer.
My son Armani participated in the program and made such a great improvement. The teachers and the staff were amazing.
I highly recommend this program!
Our 9 year old son attended the Rites "Rocking Reading and Megahit Math" camp this summer which was a great success! He embarked with much trepidation since it was "School" camp and surprisingly came home the first day and said he loved it! Through-out the 3 week session he came home and highlighted the work he did and seemed genuinely interested which we do not always see. He also attended the Wheeler camp after the morning session which he fully enjoyed. We are very impressed by the entire production of the camp and how professional and smoothly things ran. We highly recommend RITES and the camp!

Our seven year old son was diagnosed with Dyslexia last year has been attending RITES for tutoring services for the past year and we are so impressed with the support and encouragement he has received. His academic year tutor, Maria, is creative and fun in her approach in helping Harrison learn to read which has greatly increased his knowledge and confidence with Sight words and beginning reading.
This past summer he attended the Code Breakers program at the Hamilton School and we were extremely satisfied with the program there. While he was not initially thrilled about attending a summer reading program, we were pleasantly surprised that he never complained about going and seemed to enjoy it. Just recently, he read a full book to us and said he was "proud of himself". That I believe is the greatest testament to the program.
After our son was diagnosed with dyslexia as a fourth grader, we really didn't know where to turn for help. Several people pointed us toward RITES, and working with them has been extremely helpful. They paired our son up with a tutor who has been a great fit. Our son really enjoys working with her, and his reading has improved significantly in the months since they started together. We are very grateful to have RITES as a resource in our community.
Our son attended 2 summer classes and currently has 1:1 tutoring. The teachers and class content were amazing - and we appreciate the frequent feedback and individualized attention.
RITES was able to safely accommodate us for in-person tutoring to meet the special needs of our children. Our tutors are educational professionals who bring not only a great attitude about learning, but also use evidence-based techniques to teach our children. The administrative staff at RITES is great to work with--very responsive.
Our children had lots of fun, maintained their skills from last year and developed a great foundation for the next year. Importantly, our son is now enjoying math and has more confidence which will set him up to succeed in 6th grade. We had a great experience! [Our RITES tutor] has been excellent! We really appreciate all of his help.
The summer program made a tremendous impact on my son. He enjoyed the program immensely & we will continue to engage in these services next summer. Thank you !!!!
RITES is an incredible organization! My child has benefited greatly! Staff and tutors have been so supportive thank you!
My 11 year old son enrolled in the RITES virtual book club this summer. He was diagnosed with Dyslexia and has not always felt confident in his reading skills, particularly reading out loud among his classmates. We were looking for a way to help him better prepare for entering 6th grade. We were so pleasantly surprised that our son LOVED the book club. Ms. Almada the teacher was enthusiastic and was able to engage the group virtually and our son's confidence has benefited greatly from his participation.
Unfortunately, I would not recommend RITES. We have worked with RITES on several occasions. My son had a couple of great tutors a few years through RITES and, more recently, a couple that we were not impressed with. Although he had experienced tutors with true dedication a while back we did not have the same experience the last couple of times. The last two tutors had other positions and tutoring was not a priority for them - very disappointed. Look elsewhere!

All of our tutors are dedicated teachers. We are saddened when we cannot successfully tutor a student. When this family returned to tutoring under different circumstances than previously, we tried for months to make the tutoring work and volunteered many hours of our time to try to resolve the difficulties. It can be hard for families to hear the message that we are unable to tutor their child. We believe the student at this time needed a different type of support than we provide.
I am always so appreciative of RITES but giving us free tutoring for April during the COVID crisis went above and beyond! That was extremely generous and helpful. I'm so glad that my can still get the help he needs even if it's not in person. Thank you for continuing tutoring online.
For 2 years my son Riley has been tutored by Ms. Jeane at RITES (https://www.ritutorial.org). Riley has come such a long way with Ms. Jeane, he has Dyslexia and greatly struggled to even identify letters or their sounds when he first started seeing her. He works so hard every week meeting with Ms. Jeane twice and continuing to practice the rest of the week at home! I was extremely worried about regression when we were no longer able to meet in person with everything going on. However, RITES came through for us in a huge way! Not only are they offering their tutoring services online, they are free for current students through the end of April I can’t say enough how much I truly appreciate this organization and what they have done, and continue to do, for my family.
RITES is a wonderful support service for students. As a tutor/teacher providing services for students, I have seen many students get needed support to make them succeed in class. Student needs are a top priority.

Rhode Island Tutorial and Educational Services is a professional educational organization. I have worked as a tutor there for several years and have always been impressed with the knowledge, caring, and support of the directors. Programs for each student are carefully thought out and implemented. The student's needs and abilities are carefully considered when developing a program for tutoring. Rhode Island Tutorial and Educational Services is the place to contact for a student in need of educational assistance. I highly recommend this organization to any parent looking for tutoring.
I have two children who are diagnosed with dyslexia and I really wanted to find them a summer program that could help them. After spending a great deal of time researching the various options in the US, I settled on this program. We drove 2000 miles from Texas to RI and rented a house. It was a big commitment but well worth the effort. It was very well organized and the teachers were fantastic. I would highly recommend this program.
During the past several summers, my rising seventh grade grandson has been the fortunate recipient of RITES tutoring services to enhance his decoding, fluency, and reading comprehension skills. Since third grade he has benefitted from participating in the Coding program, working with individual tutors, and, finally, this summer, studying reading with a very astute reading specialist. With two full book assignments to complete, there would be much to do and this student was worried about completing them. As my grandson described his challenges and needs to Marilyn during our initial consultation, she listened kindly and intently, asked him thoughtful questions, and shared her ideas about how she thought they would begin. He was a bit concerned about being able to accomplish the tasks, but he looked forward to trying. After each session, these two shared with me new strategies they had practiced and applied, graphic organizers they had created, and chunked assignments that he would work on until their next meeting. By summer's end, my grandson was excitedly attending each session, eager to demonstrate his understanding, assimilation, and application of material Marilyn had taught him in previous lessons. Since he returned to school at the beginning of September armed with many new reading strategies and soaring self-confidence, he has looked forward to reading new books, making connections and inferences, and participating in discussions feeling fully informed. Thank you, Marilyn!

I had the opportunity to teach students enrolled in the R.I.T.E.S. program in Providence, RI this summer. This is an excellent program! My class was comprised of six students requiring decoding and encoding skills that ranged from single sounds to multi-syllabic words within the context of reading and fluency. The administration is extremely friendly, knowledgeable, organized, and professional! Lisa and Halley, the co-directors, administer pre- and post- tests to ensure students are placed within the group that best supports their needs. The wealth of information and materials for teacher/student use is amazing! In addition to small class sizes, every class was provided a paraprofessional. Most importantly is the positivity within the entire environment. This program is an excellent program that provides students a positive appropriate fun learning experience.
RITES, we are thrilled with how well our son Sam progressed after taking your summer Code Breakers class. The impacts have been massive. We have been having our son read a bit every night, and we have been blown away by not only his proficiency after the summer but even more importantly his willingness and even excitement about keeping at it. We are having to stop him from reading more so we can do the rest of our bedtime routine, which is amazing. This is the same kid that about six months ago was still breaking down in tears on a regular basis because he was having so much trouble. We are sure there will still be tears here and there, but his enthusiasm is terrific and we are so thankful for the part you all played in making that happen.
Over the past three years we have struggled to find the appropriate support for our son. Due to a learning disability, our son struggled with the basic foundational skills in reading and other areas, which threatened his self-confidence and self-esteem.
When we started the 5 week “Code Breakers” class, this past summer, I did not have overly high expectations in regards to results.
Immediately, upon commencement of summer school, we saw a different child. A child that was eager to learn, excited each day about making the 45-minute drive to the school. Never was there a complaint of, “I don’t want to go.” To the contrary he was hungry to get to school each day to sponge up as much as he could. This was a full 180 degree turn in our child and his attitude, for which we are immensely appreciative to RITES for accomplishing.
I cannot compliment the staff and the teaching system at RITES enough. As a parent that is very engaged with our child’s education, the staff and administration showed great interest and left us feeling that they were just as much invested if not more in our son education and his improvement, which was FANTASTIC.
Finally, we felt as though we had found a true educational partner.
At the end of each week, we would receive a concise report summarizing the accomplishments of the week. The professionalism and attention to detail, exceeded expectations.
Thanks to the RITES/Hamilton Summer Program, our son's confidence has grown dramatically. He now sits down to read and attacks words with determination.
RITES, took a child that had been turned off to education and learning and taught him that learning was not only fun but did not need to be overly challenging also.
Thank you, RITES, for all the support this summer!!!
My girls needed extra help with their reading skills and since coming to RITES they have improved so much. The girls also enjoyed coming here to learn so that was a big plus. I highly recommend RITES for those who need extra help with reading. They also did the summer program which is also extra learning.
My reading has improved since I started at RITES in May of 2018. Since graduating from High School in 2013, I have been at home most of the time. I was shy, and uncomfortable with new people. I am happy to come to tutoring because my reading is improving. I used to play video games but was not able to read the words. Now I can do that. I don't get lost anymore, because I can read what it says. I feel comfortable with my tutor, Deb. I hope to go to a trade school, so I can get a job that I like.
Imagine seeing a smile on your child's face, daily, as they are dismissed from Summer School!
That was my experience of collecting my son (Grade 6) from his class from the RITES program this Summer, 2019. His confidence was booming, and he even was sorry that the course didn't run through the weekends. He is begging me to sign him up for next summer already. His severe dyslexia had him shutting down at school for years, but he so enjoyed the methods, and his teacher, on this program. Thank you, RITES.
My daughter (Grade 8) also took a different course, and she tells me she had the best teacher, in her life, on this course. She also has told me that she is putting the study skills she learned to good use already in this new school year, and feeling very confident.
Rhode Island Tutorial & Educational Services does phenomenal work with their students! As an author who works with dyslexic individuals, I was extremely impressed when I visited their program over the summer, which draws students from all over. It truly is a wonderful organization, empowering individuals to become confident, able learners!
Rhode Island Tutorial and Educational Services is amazing!! During the summer, this organization has over 200 students who continue to receive tutoring services in reading and math. The dedicated professionals that manage and teach in this program are over-the-top! The instruction is differentiated for each student's needs. Additionally, they use Noah Text books for students who need scaffold literacy experiences. I highly recommend RITES to every parent who is seeking quality programming for their child.
My daughter struggles in read, writing, comprehension and Spelling . At the beginning of 5th grade last yr she was tested for IEP at her elementary school. From December to June that was in place to help her in math, reading and spelling. I also took her to specialist. She was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyscalculia along with server anxiety. Which would explain why every morning it was a fight getting her off to school. Saying she hates school she does wanna go, why cant I just home school her.... I was told about the summer program at the Hamilton School, I gave her the chose if she wanted me to sign her up cuz I didnt wanna pay $$$and her fight me all summer about going. She finally willingly agreed on her own fine mom sign me up, but this is gonna be the worst summer ever, she says. Now at the end of week 2 I can say she LOVES going . Comes home with a smile , excited to tell me what she did. She has made a new friend. And gets up willingly in the morning and gets ready to go. Thank you to the staff for making this a wonderful learning experience for the kids ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
I have two children working with tutors at RITES. Both fare well in school, but really benefit from the individual attention, directed specifically towards their needs, that they receive at RITES. Their tutors are warm, supportive, and show great expertise in their fields. My kids love going. Working with their tutors relaxes them and boosts their skills and confidence.
I have had the pleasure of working for RITES for over a year. I love working within a highly professional, child-focused environment. RITES regularly extends to the community with relevant, needed workshops and maintains excellent resource materials. In both their summer programs and tutoring sessions I have witnessed amazing student growth. Without hesitation, I regularly recommend RITES to families and schools. RITES is a tremendous asset to our community.
This is the first time that I saw my daughter like to write essays and have confidence in math. She had a lot of fun while improving her writing skills and math. I really like Mrs. Seal's organization of the class. My daughter always complained essay writing and math are boring. But not in Mrs. Seal's class! She really like the Power Up program and felt sad it was only for 3 weeks. That is a big difference. Thank you, Mrs. Seal! Thank you, RITES!
I just wanted to share some positive feedback about the great experience my daughter enjoyed while participating in the RITES Novel Exploration course this Summer. Initially my daughter was not interested in partaking in anything related to keeping her educational “wheels" turning during her summer vacation. Well did that quickly change once she was reunited (she has taken RITES programs in summers past) with all the educated, selfless, accommodating and lovely staff affiliated with this amazing program! She had so many exciting things to tell me as she moved along with the book and it’s “ dissection". I can’t thank all of you enough for being such a positive reinforcement for her during her involvement of this wonderful program !!
We went here for Spanish tutoring for my daughter who is entering high school. Her school did not have a good Spanish program and my daughter wanted to be ready for Spanish 2 in high school. Emilia researched the requirements at the high school my daughter would attend and created a curriculum to teach the material she did not know. Emilia was a good teacher, organized, and dependable. A great overall experience.
This summer, I taught a Math and Reading Camp for RITES in Providence, RI. I was not only impressed with the professionalism and curriculum set for my students, but the concern, care, attention to detail, and commitment RITES has for their students was unprecedented. The RITES' students soared academically and socially within an atmosphere of warmth, safety, fun, and compassion. It was a pleasure working at Rhode Island Tutorial & Educational Services and I would highly recommend their academic services to those in need.
I am a first grade teacher and tutor at RITES focusing on elementary math, reading and writing. RITES provides a range of services to help children succeed! It is a wonderful organization that helps children gain new skills as well as confidence. RITES reaches out to children who desperately need help through scholarships too. I enjoy working with such caring, competent professionals. I am proud to be associated with this organization.
RITES does it Right!
As a special ed. teacher for the public schools, I was extremely impressed with the educational services that RITES offers. RITES utilizes empirically-based curricula that reach a diverse population of learners through multi-sensory instruction. This type of instruction has been proven to make learning meaningful for students; and as such, students become fully engaged and confident. These are the students who often become stewards of their own learning. They learn to understand their learning styles and will advocate for themselves as adults. Additionally, the board, administrators and staff are dedicated professionals who truly care about the "whole child". This organization ensures that each child is given the support he/she needs to succeed. This is an amazing organization!
Rhode Island Tutorial & Educational Services is a phenomenal organization. Their directors truly care about the learning needs of both children and adults alike, understanding the critical need to provide highly effective services that will meet the academic needs of each “individual” in a very caring and positive manner. They ensure that each tutor has extensive teaching experience and training — armed with a whole range of research based tools to meet the needs of their students. I’m both a parent and professional in the literacy field, and I cannot say enough about this program. Bottom line, RITES provides positive results for their students! Rhode Island residents are extremely fortunate to have this organization in their midst.
My son is ten years old and has ADHD and dyslexia. He has always struggled in school. We have been trying to get him the services he needs in school but have been unsuccessful. It has been since first grade that we have been trying. He is now in the fourth grade. In February of 2018 we met with Lisa from RITES. We were connected with an Orton Gillingham tutor and an educational advocate. Both have helped tremendously. After only three months of tutoring my son has advanced one grade level in reading. The best part is that he loves his tutor and skips in and out of his sessions. He even seems happier overall. The advocate has successfully gotten us what we needed in his IEP. There is still more work to do but so far so good. In one meeting with the school and the RITES advocate we were able to identify what was missing in the IEP and have appropriate goals and accommodations added. Previous meeting meetings were filled with long discussions that never resulted in much change. We are so happy we found RITES!
We have an 11 year old severe Dyslexic son and we referred to RITES by our attorney two years ago. We have been extremely pleased with the tutoring and the teachers at this facility. Our son wasnt able to read and had no confidence. With the tutoring and the right program (Ortan Gilligham) our son is starting to read and has gained so much confidence . We highly recommend RITES for any any student having difficulties. The teachers and the director are all wonderful individuals and are genuinely caring and make you feel so confident in finding the right help for child. Our son never likes going to school because of all his difficulties but, when it comes to tutoring he is always willing to go and is so happy. Thank you RITES !
When we found out about our daughter's dyslexia in late June, we jumped into action to find a placement for her for the summer as well as the upcoming school year. RITES was recommended by several friends. I am so thrilled with this program!! My daughter's self esteem plummeted in 5th grade as her learning issues became more of a struggle. At RITES, we saw our happy girl again. She gained her confidence and learned many tools to help her with learning with dyslexia. I would highly recommend this program!!
I have been a tutor at RITES for many years and continue to be proud to be affiliated with this fine organization. RITES provides high quality tutoring that is individualized to meet the learning needs of each student. RITES is continuing to expand its scholarship funds to provide needed educational services for more students.
My son has dyslexia, he was struggling in school. He wasn't able to get any help in school. He was falling threw the cracks. If it wasn't for the rites program Jacob would not be where he is today! He is able to read, write and comprehend what he is reading. I highly recommend this organization to any parent looking for tutoring or summer programs!
I have been a special education teacher for over twenty years. For the last he last five years I have primarily focused on working with students with learning disabilities. I was a teacher in the RITES Code Breakers program this summer at the Hamilton School. I found the RITES program to be well run, the director provided fantastic clinical support, and the students were a joy to work with. Using the OG method in a supportive and positive atmosphere with a low teacher: student ratio, that honors the learning style of each student, I was impressed at how much the growth the students made! It really was high quality instruction in an optimal environment. I loved working at RITES and feel the students receive a very special experience when they attend the programs or 1:1 tutoring RITES provides.
As a tutor, I love working for Rhode Island Tutorial because everything we do is student-centered. From the first moment we meet, we get to know the student's challenges, goals--and interests. This allows us to tailor our tutoring sessions and enables our students to get the most out of their time with us.
We help our students develop skills and accomplish specific tasks. And by always focusing on where they are and what they can achieve, we support them in developing the self-confidence that enables them to become more active learners and more enthusiastic scholars.
Words cannot express my gratitude toward RITES. My son was NOT progressing at school, even with added resources. In one year tutoring with rites, my son was flying through reading levels. We are now approaching year two, He is almost to grade level. I feel that the services RITES offers are a life saver for my son. He could have given up on his education. He was falling through the cracks at his school. Rites (and especially his tutor Jeanne) have helped his success , not only in reading but writing, spelling, handwriting, self efficacy, and most importantly self esteem. What RITES does is amazing, nothing short of a miracle.
Our son is severely dyslexic, the public school has been no help whatsoever, after 4 years our son could hardly read. Our attorney recommended Rhode Island Tutorial & Educational Services. What a godsend, although our son might never be able to read as you and I can, RITEs has started him on the path, in 16 weeks he was able to read a whole story. The boost to his confidence cannot be overstated. If you have or know of a child with educational difficulties, consider RITEs, you won't regret it. Simply marvelous.
Rhode Island and the surrounding communities are fortunate to have such a phenomenal resource that provides high-quality research based educational services for students who are struggling. It has been truly heartwarming to witness the changes in my nephew who participates in one on one tutoring and was part of the summer program at RITES. The dedication, enthusiasm, and professionalism of the teachers and the directors inspired me to volunteer as a board member to help support this program's mission to provide services for students regardless of their ability to pay. I am proud to be part of this outstanding organization.
I’m a tutor at RITES, specializing in middle and high school math and science, as well as SAT and ACT prep. I feel very fortunate to work at RITES. Directors Lisa and Halley are genuinely concerned with providing the best possible instruction for each student. They provide extensive experience, resources, and training to support their tutors in addressing any and all needs of each student.

I have been a math/science/study skills tutor at RITES for nearly 2 years, and have enjoyed immensely working with the dedicated RITES staff. I have been very impressed with their commitment to provide each and every student with the resources and help that they require. They have provided me with valuable advice and resources on many occasions when I've had to deal with challenging situations.
Rhode Island Tutorial & Educational Services is a wonderful organization providing incredible tutoring services by wonderful teachers. My son Matthew has dyslexia and it was Linda Giordano from "RITES" that changed not just his world around but our world as a family. With her patience and compassion and knowledge, she taught Matthew how to over come his disability but also alleviated our stress as a family, because we knew he was being tutored by some of the best experts in Rhode Island. Matthew went on to succeed in a challenging private high school and then on to college. I will always be grateful for the help we received from RITES. --Cristina Berard
I am a proud board member of Rhode Island Tutorial & Educational Services (RITES.) RITES has been serving the educational needs of students across RI and neighboring Massachusetts for many years. Their one-to-one and small group instruction is personalized and tailored for each individual. Whether a student is in need of intensive reading instruction from an Orton-Gillingham certified tutor, needs to improve study and organizational skills, or wants to prepare to take the SAT/ACT for college, RITES can provide the class and instructor that will meet each student's needs.
As a tutor for RITES for several years, I have witnessed first hand all the thought and compassion that goes into helping RITES students to succeed. The list of services available to students has expanded in recent years. These services include not only tutoring for the student, but also support for parents along the difficult path to obtaining appropriate services for their child.
I am a clinical neuropsychologist who provides evaluations for children with learning differences. I have worked with RITES for many years prior to becoming a board member, and have been consistently impressed with their high level of professional development and dedication to best practices in tutoring students of all ages. They have a very individualized approach that they use to maximize the growth of their students. I have gotten very good feedback from families who have participated with tutoring services, and am happy to be able to recommend their services.
Rhode Island Tutorial & Education Services (RITES) does an admirable job of providing the local community with access to specialized learning programs and opportunities for receiving tutoring. As a board member, I have seen first hand all of the hard work the RITES team does behind the scenes to make sure their students and teachers have the best possible experience. The staff is passionate, dedicated, and focused towards making their students successful. This organization deserves the community's support and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to assist them in whatever small way I can as a board member!
Rhode Island Tutorial and Educational Services has made incredible progress in the expansion of services and programs it is offering. This past summer's program is growing and creating a lot of demand for the organization. There is a continued path for being able to offer more scholarships through fundraising efforts. I see a great amount of growth and success in the near future.
As a RITES tutor, I have seen the great care the RITES administration takes in setting students up for success. They provide a personal consultation with the student, family and tutor where concerns are discussed in detail.
RITES hires expert teachers and provides effective instructional tools. Tutoring is tailored to the individual student and progress is closely monitored. As a team, we are committed to a positive outcome for each of our students.
I have been fortunate to work with the directors of RITES (Rhode Island Tutorial & Educational Services. The organization is extremely well organized and accommodating to the tutors and tutees. The support received from Haley and Lisa is beyond expectation.
This is a very impressive group! So helpful. They align your student with just the right well-trained, experienced tutor. My son (17) really related well to his LA tutor--who can say that about a 17 year old? He never complained when he had to meet with Sandy Kaufman. She made my son feel comfortable, she treated him with respecr, she was gently professional, and effective. She had excellent communication skills and we always knew exactly what was to be done and if there was ever a question on a scheduled meeting time, Sandy was both available and flexible. Her personality is likable, she is sharp, and she is compassionate.
I cannot say enough positive things about RITES! My first experience with RITES was through a summer program offered at Hamilton (Orton-Gillingham-based Language Arts). My 7 year old dyslexic son made such gains in just 5 weeks that I asked his teacher, Allyson, to continue tutoring him throughout the year. He attended RITES camp again last summer and continues to work with Allyson each week. She is wonderful and my son continues to gain confidence and is now reading at grade level. Having dyslexia is quite a challenge for children in elementary school and I feel very fortunate to have found such amazing help early on in my son's life. I highly recommend RITES to all those needing a little extra support!
I contacted RITES concerning tutoring (writing and math) and SAT prep. for my two sons. We had a very thorough meeting with RITES to discuss our needs. It was clear at the meeting that RITES was very focused on matching each of my sons to the right tutor. Not only did the boys benefit from the tutoring sessions they also enjoyed their time with each tutor. It was a very positive and beneficial experience. The tutors were very qualified and really understood my sons. I cannot recommend them enough!
RITES is an exceptional resource for students and families. Their staff is highly trained in multi-sensory educational strategies and they all strive to meet the needs of their clients. The expertise and professionalism of the directors and staff is unmatched, and is truly what makes RITES such an amazing place!
RITES has been an exceptional resource for my family. My 7-yr old daughter has dyslexia and struggled greatly in school before she was introduced to the multi-sensory educational techniques used by RITES and her amazing tutor. We started with RITES one year ago and today she is reading at or above grade level in first grade. And she has actually enjoyed the journey!
I have been very pleased with the programs offered by RITES. My son, who has dyslexia, has maintained skills during the summer by attending the five-week OG program last year, and the mathematics and written expression program this past summer. He is currently having a once-a-week session with a tutor to keep him on track, as his school has dismissed him from his in-school resource help because he has done so well. My high school age daughter enjoyed the study skills workshop offered by RITES before school began. She feels she learned some great organizational skills that prepared her for 9th grade. I have recommended RITES to a number of friends for a variety of academic challenges.
My daughter has been receiving a multi-sensory spelling program for dysgraphia with RITES for the past 8 months. When I initially called RITES, I immediately felt at ease with their knowledge of this condition and the services that were available to remediate it. Since starting the program, my daughter has made significant improvement in spelling and has also made tremendous gains in her confidence with her writing. Her tutor makes the sessions fun and my daughter loves going. Our experience with RITES has been wonderful and their services are highly recommended.
RITES has been a game changer for our family. My oldest daughter is dyslexic and has continued to struggle in school and with her confidence. She went to one of the several camps offered through RITES this past summer. She had no interests in any "school" camp and promised she would not participate, and they couldn't , make her. After day 1, she could not wait to return to camp with her new friends and teacher, in fact she was very sad when it was over. The work she produced at camp was amazing and I could not even believe how confident and proud she was to share everything with all of us. Through camp she connected with 1 of her two current RITES tutor. She looks forward to working with her tutor every week. The academic difference is great, but the confidence they have helped her to find again is what has made the biggest difference. She believes in herself and knows she is capable of great work. We feel so lucky to be able to work with everyone at RITES.
I rely on RITES regularly. I refer parents, teachers, and tutors and I am never disappointed. They understand learning differences and they communicate effectively with all interested parties. Their tutors and teachers are well trained. The two co-directors, Lisa Bigney and Halley Lavenstein, supervise tutors effectively and administrate programs such as the summer school at The Hamilton School at Wheeler very very well! Thank you, RITES!
Students, parents, and teachers are in great care with RITES. They are professional, take pride in their hard work as they have brought their company to a high level of educational services. Their process is very thorough and they truly care about their clients and staff.
Record keeping is done well. They follow up and provide a tremendous amount of assistance.
I cannot imagine a better place to teach and learn.
My son participated in the RITES summer program at Hamilton this past summer. The program and staff were amazing. Despite having to spend 5 weeks of his summer in school, there was not a single morning where he was not excited and happy to go. In just 5 weeks he made significant and measurable improvements that have carried over into this school year. He continues to get tutored by RITES weekly and we are so thankful that such an amazing service was available to us.
RITES works hard to address a need in this community. Without their strong staff, commitment to children, and valuable insight, many families an students would struggle to achieve the academic success that is imperative. Students at RITES learn how they learn, learn how they think, learn how they succeed, so they can continue to reach their full potential.
As a tutor working with RITES, I have seen seriously struggling learners begin to bloom with their highly individualized, student-centered approach to learning. All students, whatever their financial or educational situations may be, are genuinely valued which leads to wonderful outcomes for students and families.
As a lawyer, I work with families to get children the special education services that they need. RITES did an absolutely amazing job with a client of mine. He made dramatic progress working with RITES tutors, making years of gains in a period of a year. The RITES staff worked closely with his mother and the school district to provide him with services. They provided tremendous insight and were very flexible about increasing services and recommending outside services when appropriate.
RITES provides quality programs that have made a positive difference for our child. Without hesitation, I recommend RITES to any parent that is seeking to help a child that is having difficulty in school or has learning differences.
All families I have referred have been impressed with the valuable expertise and responsiveness of the RITES staff.
I have been a RITES tutor for several years, and I continue to be impressed with the professionalism of its staff and the quality of services that RITES provides. The tutors are dedicated, highly skilled educators who have a genuine interest in their students. The professional development for tutors and the informational workshops for parents are always high quality. RITES continues to be an invaluable resource for students and their families throughout the area.
I chose to become a Board member for RITES because I was incredibly impressed by the passion and talent of the founders (Lisa & Halley) as well as the incredible work the tutors at RITES do on a daily basis with the children. My own children have benefited from their services, and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for reasonably priced, skilled tutoring services. They will accommodate a variety of needs, and are helpful beyond expectation.
RITES knows how to reach different learners and the kids thrive! They work together and with parents to bring the best results for our kids.
The services that RITES provides to young individuals in the greater Providence area is wonderful. They have many qualified professionals on their staff that make a difference in the academic lives of youngsters. In addition, the educators help students learn to believe in themselves, find strategies to overcome obstacles in learning and move forward int their academics.
There is no other program like RITES in Rhode Island. They are an authentic group of professionals who genuinely love what they do. The tutoring services are top notch; care is taken in both pre and post assessments; individual goals are developed along with a plan to meet them; and students learn using multi-sensory resources, including lots of games. The summer program takes all of these strengths and puts them together in a fun program filled with lots of learning and confidence-building.

I have referred students to their programs always with amazing results. they truly understand dyslexia and other language-based learning challenges set within the child development context. Their staff is a top notch group who never seems to forget that the child is at the center of everything. 5 Stars is not a high enough rating for this organization.
RITES offers the individualization that many students need to succeed. Each lesson is designed so the learner meets with success and makes steady progress over the course of the year. There is no set program or one size fits all!
My son and I had greatly benefit from the great educational tutoring we had received.
My son had exceeded expectation in Math and accomplish so much on his Math curriculum.

Rhode Island Tutorial and Educational Services (RITES) is a fabulous place to work and aids students aged elementary through adult. The directors, Lisa Bigney and Halley Lavenstein, show immense effort, concern, and professional assistance in providing many families with the information and placements needed to help their students be successful. From first hand experience as a RITES employee, I can say confidently that the personnel are highly educated, experienced, and motivated to see students identify their best learning strategies, strengths, and challenges with the outcome being individual successes for all involved in the life long learning process. It is with highest regard that I write this review for RITES as the caring, supportive, and committed organization seeking positive achievement and growth for all students.

They are constantly seeking out ways to reach and accommodate students and to meet those children's varying needs. Particular effort is given to "match" the appropriate tutor with each child. I am pleased to be a part of their student focused, educational support and service team.

My son was diagnosed with dyslexia and RITES has changed our lives. He started his one on one tutor sessions with a Qualified, Certified tutor that specialized in the Orton-Gillingham approach. The results were overwhelming, he became more confidence and developed a love for reading. Thank you RITES.
RI Tutorial has changed our lives! 15 months go when my daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia, we were overwhelmed and didn't know where to start. Our doctor referred us to RI Tutorial - thank god - and our daughter has been transformed. She is excited to read, to attempt words she doesn't know, and is so much less frustrated at school. I'm so grateful to Lisa and her team for improving our lives.

We are so grateful to the dedicated staff at RITES. When we learned of my daughters dyslexia diagnosis the Dr referred us to RITES for immediate intervention. We've seen such a big improvement in my daughters reading ability but also her willingness to try hard words that in the past she would have given up on. Thank you to Lisa and everyone at RITES!!!
RITES helps a lot of students succeed in school. The one on one tutoring is the most effective way to reach students. ACT/SAT prep is beneficial to students, whose scores can increase with the one on one tutoring.

I am a tutor at RITES. I love the professionalism and workshops RITES provides. We strive to be the best tutors available. The care for the students success is of the utmost importance. We explain concepts to the students in many different ways, to help all types of learners. I enjoy the time I spend in the center.
My boys would not be where they are today if it were not for RITES. They are confident, well adjusted, honor roll high schoolers, who have overcome the difficulties of Dyslexia, and are now looking forward to college! RITES has helped them not only improve academically, but also grow and mature into responsible young adults.
When I was first introduced to RITES, my children were both 2 years below grade level in reading and writing (after many years with IEP's and Special Ed support in our school system). I had been referred to many "tutors" who were classroom teachers by day and tutors by weekend and summer. I was not interested in this approach, since the classroom teachers had not been able to help my boys using their curriculums and I was afraid that they would take the same curriculum and feed it back to my boys. I wanted something different and specialized - and affordable. The staff at RITES worked with me to find a tutor who specialized in the areas that each of my son's needed. The tutors were willing to work with the classroom teachers for the purpose of helping my boys succeed in the classroom. Today, my boys no longer need support of a tutor on a weekly basis. Their non LD friends will actually call my boys on Sunday nights about homework assignments. It's amazing!
The tutors at RITES were also a support system for me as a parent. I was always included in the plans for their curriculums. The literature in the office and the available parent workshops were very helpful to me so that I could give support from home and also become more educated and less frustrated and fearful about their LD. Workshops and camps are also available for the students. I will be enrolling my boys in some of them in the near future in preparation for college, like note taking and SAT prep workshops.
I have recently enrolled my youngest child (11 YO) at RITES. He does not have a documented LD, but struggles with general organization and study skills. He doesn’t know how to "study" for tests, doesn't bring notes or books home and has a hard time planning for projects. I found that my boys with LD learned study skills through the Special Ed curriculum, but as a non LD student, study skills was not able to be stressed enough in the general classroom - due to the size and vast amount of material that teachers need to cover in a day. So I am back at RITES so that he too can reach his highest potential.
I recommend RITES to any parent who is looking for a way to help their children become better students - LD or not.
Thank You RITES!
I cannot commend RITES highly enough! My daughter has challenges with executive functioning, organizational skills, and math skills. We signed her up for the two week summer session focusing on those issues at the Hamilton School, much to her chagrin. To my delight, and to my daughter's surprise, she greatly enjoyed the camp, engaged in exciting activities, improved her writing and math skills, and stated that it wasn't at all "like school, which would have been horrible. Learning was actually fun!" In fact, she stated later that she preferred the RITES camp over her traditional day camp where she could swim every day, which is one of her favorite activities! She was sent home with a binder full of educational tools designed to correspond with her personal learning style. She utilizes this binder currently at school, and her teachers greatly appreciated the resources as well. Her self-esteem increased tremendously, as she now sees herself as having a different learning style, rather than the label of having a learning "disability." THANK YOU RITES!!!
Last year our son struggled in the 5th grade. We looked to get him some extra help and we found RITES. We were so nervous about financially committing to any outside help but we knew we needed something for our son. The staff at RITES were so welcoming and helpful from our first inquiry. The tutor took time to listen to our son, think about his needs, and very thoughtfully implemented support. We continued with their summer program: Reading Comprehension and Study Skills. The knowledge and level of expertise of their staff is incomparable! Our son learned new ways of learning and reading concepts that are helping him into the 6th grade. What I appreciate most of all about the RITES program is that the teachers collectively provided an atmosphere of encouragement and our son has gained some confidence with them.
I am a reading specialist and have worked with RITES tutors and students for 8 years. The organization is professional and thorough. The tutors are not only experts in their field, but they are caring and engaging people. RITES knows how important it is to match tutors with students and is meticulous about getting to know a student and his or her needs.
RITES has so many qualities that make it great, from the effort they make to find the right tutor for your child to the abundant literature and information for the student and their parents that they provide in their waiting room. But most importantly for us was the ongoing tutorial service that we have received from a very hard working, caring, and dedicated teacher who works with our son. She is constantly looking for new and innovative ways to help him improve. It is clear that she is committed to helping him reach his potential. She has become like family because she wants to see him succeeds as if she had a vested interest. We appreciate all that she does to help us in our efforts to support our son in reaching his goals. Thank you!
I am a certified Orton-Gillingham tutor. I've been working with RITES for almost three years now. Everything about this organization is professional, and I've seen it help so many students. I would highly recommend using their services.

I teach reading, writing, spelling (OG). I've been teaching for almost ten years and am impressed with the rapport tutors establish with their students. The co-partners are devoted to their work, and their enthusiasm radiates outward, affecting teachers and students around them. I give this organization an A+. Kathleen Cooper
It was suggested that we investigate RITES when my daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia. The director was very helpful in finding us a tutor who was a good fit with our daughter's personality and with our particular circumstances. We have continued this service for years now. Our tutor has been extremely flexible and supportive of the educational goals with have for our child.
There are many tutors for students with learning differences, but RITES understands the complexity of helping students with learning differences AND their families. Their tutors are professional and good teachers. Further, the organization communicates effectively with students, families, and schools. I have hired RITES numerous times to tutor a wide range of students in my school. I have never been disappointed. I highly recommend them.
My Son Kyle has made great progress through his hard work and the hard work of his tutor. Allyson and Lisa I can't thank you enough for the wonderful and necessary service you offer. You are transforming lives, one child at a time.
I am a tutor for RITES and love what they do. Not only do they provide great tutoring for students and families, they also provide continuing education for their tutors. They want their tutors to know and understand learning disabilities and how to build skills for our students. They have guest speakers and host showings of executive dysfunction documentaries, etc. RITES is a great non profit!

I have been to many of the workshops RITES has sponsored and they are amazing! RITES is really dedicated to helping students and parents understand what is happening in the brain that causes student's difficulties and disabilities. They give you concrete strategies on how to combat your problems and work toward improving yourself and your study habits little by little. They provide you with 5 options on how to improve, but then really tell you to focus on just one and ask you how are you going to achieve that improvement this week. Really practical advice! I love RITES!
I have referred many clients for both individual tutoring and workshops. I am impressed with the willingness of staff to seek information and collborate with me while working with referrals. The wide range of expert tutors and flexibility to meet client needs is also of benefit. Feedback from parents has been positive. They are a very valuable resource.
My son has dyslexia and attended the RITES summer program and has been receiving instruction from a RITES tutor for nearly 2 years. He has made remarkable progress and were it not for RITES and the support he has received, he would not be the confident learner that he is today. His tutor is Orton-Gillingham trained and modifies the curriculum to suit his academic needs. Halley and Lisa are always available to answer any questions or concerns I may have as a parent. They offer suggestions and lend a listening ear when the weight of having a child with a learning disability gets to be overwhelming. RITES provides free parent educational seminars/workshops which is a tremendous resource when one is trying to navigate the world of evaluations,IEP's, 504's,etc. I cannot say enough about the level of knowledge and professionalism that is at the heart of RITES program.- Mary Beth Berube, North Attleboro, MA
RITES is an amazing service with well qualified tutors. My child got so much out of her sessions and the tutors were not only great teachers but they really cared about my child.
Staff was supportive of parents and gave our son a great foundation of OG skills while restoring his confidence as a child newly diagnosed with a learning difference.
Our practice frequently refers clients to RITES and, we consistently receive positive reports about the quality of RITES services. Our clinical/evaluation group is multi-disciplinary, completing numerous psychoeducational, neuropsychological and speech and language evaluations with a diverse array of children and adolescents. When follow-up services are indicated within the tutorial domain, RITES is the first agency we typically turn to. Lisa and Halley respond promptly to client inquiries, offer insightful suggestions, sustain a diverse array of service offerings and collaborate reliably with referring professionals. Their agency has become invaluable within the Rhode Island and Massachusetts educational tutorial communities. Dr. Rick Solomon, Co-Director, Delta Consultants Providence, RI
I have been working with RITES for many years now, and have been impressed by how well-trained and supportive their tutors are. They go beyond what is typically provided in a tutoring agency, and they have kept their rates very reasonable over the years. Halley &Lisa are dedicated to the RI community, and they are tireless in their pursuit of scholarship monies for families in need. I highly recommend them!!
My 9 year old son has been attending the 5 week summer session at RITES for Orton- Gillingham skills for the past two years. As a result, his confidence and skill level have benefitted immensely. This program has been wonderful, not only because it makes use of the abundance of free time in the summer, but also because it provides the consistency he needs to ensure his academic success. The teachers in the program are true professionals who genuinely understand the many co-existing conditions that occur with kids with learning differences (such as attention issues or social/peer related issues). They work to help the child not only to build skills for reading, but also to develop strategies for better listening or for more appropriate peer interaction. Not only is the program effective, but he also truly enjoys going. Prior to O.G. training, learning had always been an arduous chore for my son. RITES has helped him to become motivated, because he now realizes that if he tries, he can actually do it. He is currently in 4th grade and is reading at a solidly average 4th grade level--and actually loves to read!
RITES tutorial services helped my high school age daughter with her study skills - this 4 session class was so practical and helpful . Their scheduling is very flexible. She also received individual tutoring for ACT and SAT tests and this gave her so much confidence. The tutors were knowledgeable in their subjects and tailored their style to my daughter. RITES was also very open to feedback and if we needed to shift the focus of tutoring they responded to all of our requests. I would highly recommend RITES!
As an Orton-Gillingham tutor I have received referals for tutor work. They are a fine organization and I would not hesitate to refer clients to them.
I called RI Tutorial for my son who was diagnosed with mixed expressive and receptive language disorder. His neuropsychologist and I wanted him to have a specific structured learning plan which was not offered in my child's public schooling. The first day we met Mary it was to see if she would be a good fit for working with my son. Mary has since change the life of my son and has given my family hope that my child will succeed with confidence. It has only been a few months and we are still receiving services from RI Tutorial however my child now enjoys reading, the differences are amazing. My son absolutely loves Mary and she is so patient and reassuring with him. Any time I had a concerns or questions about upcoming IEP'sor evaluations they would be right there with answers and even helpful resources. RI Tutorial has definitely change our lives for the better giving my family a positive outlook on the tough world of learning disabilities. Thank you RI Tutorial
My son was born with a facial difference and an MRI revealed some brain abnormalities. He had received early intervention through our town starting at age 2 and a half. He received services available at school but they didn't seem to fit his learning style. RITES services started the fall of his first grade year 2010-2011. It was through RITES we found an amazing tutor and the appropriate program for his learning differences and his path to loving reading and education began. The organization played a key role in locating a tutor for him as well as guiding us in finding an appropriate learning environment for him. He is thriving in his new learning environment and we are still utilizing RITES to guide us through the process of attaining an advocate to make sure his progress continues. RITES offers a myriad of services essential to the education and well being of our States most unique learners all children should have an opportunity to learn in a safe and supportive environment. I can not imagine where we would be without their services and commitment to special needs kids and their families.
I attended a workshop on IEP"s. They were absolutely wonderful and very helpful. I am also using their services for my daughter. They are very friendly and were willing to meet with us before making recommendation for my daughter's needs.
All three of my children have been to RITES for varying types of help. The RITES teachers not only have done what they promised to do, it is always on my terms! Rare, these days. My daughter is now a sophmore in college in a challenging Pre-Vet program and getting all A's and B's, thanks to Lisa Bigny. My two other sons also are recieving A's and B's thanks to the help from the RITES teachers! I am so grateful to have this resource available to me.
We have been going to, and have been supported by, our tutor at RITES for two years now. Our tutor,Sandy, has become both a family friend and part of the amazing network of miracles that help our son in his journey as a student, learner and a human being. I cannot give enough accolades to both Sandy, personally, and the organization as a whole. She is amazing at what she does, has such a loving, nurturing and guiding relationship with Zander. She had invited me to or I have attended four seminars through RITES that have been excellent. We have referred two other clients to RITES and hey are so happy too. I am forever grateful for the important and much-needed services and care that RITES provides. I hope that they are able to extend and continue their incredible work and system of support, education and outreach. We need it! We appreciate it! Please keep it going!
I was distraught over the inability to understand my son's learning disability and to get his school to take my concerns seriously. Lisa took the time to talk to me, give me resources and be available for a follow-up call. All with no charge. She calmed me and gave me confidence to deal more effectively with my son's teacher's.
In addition to being board member, I am also a private college advisor. In my practice, I see many students who are newly diagnosed with ADD/ADHD or a learning difference. RITES is an INVALUABLE resource for families. The tutors are amazing, from subject tutoring to summer sessions and Sunday high school study skills courses. The unique thing about RITES is that the tutors are experts in helping students with LDs. This is rare and SO critical for kids struggling with an LD. I recommend RITES without reservation!
My scholar benefitted by RITES Programs at the right time in her academic career. I have found public schools don't often teach valuable time managment skills, organizational skills, note taking skills and leave it to chance that students will figure it out. RITES was a GREAT resource for learning these skills that she'll carry throughout her entire academic years! As a parent RITES provided up to date information in a supportive environment that I could have never provided to my teen.
The RITES Program has been an invaluabel service to many many children and their families in the Rhode Island and surrouding areas. With professionals who have expertise in the area of reading and learning challenges, they have provided outstanding support for children and families through direct service to the children and organzing workshops to educate and support parents in their child's educational journey. I applaude them !
