Mission: To work with communities and landowners to protect farmland in alaska
Programs: Lands program: identify properties to protect; work with landowners to protect their farmland; raise funds for farmland protection. Assist landowners with easement process and conduct transactions. In 2016, we closed on a 68 acre musk ox farm. The farm is in a high risk development area focused in our core region of the matanuska valley at risk for development. This farm also receives 18,000 visitors a year.
program outreach and promotion: educate the public about our lands program easement process and garner support for both farmland preservation and the agriculture industry in general. Reached out to landowners about conservation. In addition, we started a weekly radio show, ag matters, that educates alaskan's about the ag industry in alaska.
farmlink program: connect land owners with land seekers to assist in transitioning property while maintaining its agriculture integrity. We launched this program in 2016, reaching out to over 1,000 landowners about the program and enrolling five farmland sellers and seven farmland owners. The farmlink program supported south central alaska craft in their efforts to build farmer to farmer community training and networking.
