Programs: Farmers market: the farmer educates the consumer directly about the the importance of sustainable agriculture in terms of nutritional value. The market provides a venue for farmer education about growing food for local people and direct marketing education in a rich agricultural area and a place for farmers to meet. Also the market provides a place to exchange knowledge and ideas, information on both organic and sustainable agriculture as well as recipes for a healthy diet. Gleaning program: the hlfm gleans (takes donations of extra produce) from the vendors at the end of each market, organizes the produce, and donates the excess produce to casa san francisco in milton, de, a charity which runs a soup kitchen as part of its mission. Program workshops: what to grow for farmers markets--types of diversified crops small farmers are able to grow in the delmarva; succsssion planting; how to plant enough for market; traditional crops; heirlooms, niche marketing, and specialty items; harvest times for farmers markets. Selling what you grow (presentation)--fresh and clean produce;food safety training; abundance; signage; traffic flow and setup; pricing; and marketing skills.
