Mission: A non-profit organization dedicated to reducing infant mortality numbers in Mississippi by providing education and actual products, such as cribs for infants. The Alliance also assists families who have experienced the loss of an infant due to any infant death by providing support group meetings and by reaching out to family members and loved ones after the death of an infant.
Results: More than 425 cribs were distributed to families in 2012 to provide a safe place for their infant to sleep alone in his or her own bed. The MS SIDS Alliance staff attended trade shows, nurses conventions, health fairs and community events to spread the awareness of a safe sleep environment and the importance of education and a repetitive message about safe sleep for infants. More than 500 expectant mothers and/or caregivers were provided supplies for their infants such as diapers, wipes, lotion, shampoo, socks and Halo Sleep Sacks for their newborns or infants under one year of age.
Target demographics: low income families throughout the state of MS living in poverty and below poverty level as identified
Geographic areas served: all 82 counties in MS with concentration on areas of high infant mortality numbers, high rates of unemployment and teen pregnancies
Programs: Baby Basics--after a presentation on a safe sleep environment, participants are provided basics for their infants such as diapers, wipes, pacifiers, socks, bibs, shampoo, lotion and Halo SleepSacks. The Alliance also provides cribs for any infant in MS in need of a safe place to sleep if the caregiver or parent cannot afford a crib for their infant.
