Mission: Independence, Inc. was the pilot project in Independent Living in the state of Kansas. In 1983 it was selected as one of the nation's five outstanding Centers for Independent Living. Independence, Inc. serves anyone with a physical or mental condition that limits one or more of life?s major activities, or who is regarded as having such a disability. Some examples of people who use our services: A blind person who is new in town might want to learn how to use the public transportation system. A young adult with mental retardation might want to learn how to cook meals independently. A person with a newly acquired disability might want to meet someone else with a similar disability in a one-on-one supportive relationship. A person with a disability might want help in applying for disability benefits. A person with a visual or mobility impairment might want to learn to use the computer or the telephone with Assistive Technology. A person who uses a wheelchair might want technical support or help in applying for funding to build a ramp at their home. A person might need rides to work or medical appointments.

As an Independent Living Center, we work with people with varying disabilities to live in the environments of their choice, and we offer options, resources and advocacy to help people live fulfilling lives. Our vision is to work together in transforming our communities to be the best places in which people with disabilities can live, learn, and work.
