Our family was chosen to partner with Habitat for Humanity for a new home. They worked close with us and guided us not only in the building process, but was fully at our access for the transition from renters to home owners. Because of their help, we not only got a new, safe structure of a home, we also got a new, safe community! A place that our family will grow and finally call HOME. Habitat of York County not only stood by us, but rallied an entire county to stand by us as well!
Habitat for Humanity of York County Maine is an organization that went through some stops and starts over several years before entering a sustained growth mode. I have volunteered at the ReStore in Kennebunk for nearly 5 years and in that time I have seen the ReStore become an important resource for good used building supplies/furniture. In the process, the store has demonstrated excellent revenue growth which critical to the core mission of building homes. They are now starting builds on a regular schedule and provide a very active weatherization program - Important in Maine!!
While not a core objective, an additional contribution the organization makes is giving local people who have had some tough breaks in life a chance to work within the organization and progress to the point they are able to return to the community and families as strong contributors. In the cases I have seen I am not sure these people would have made as quick and positive recovery without these opportunities. This has also been an enriching experience for those of us working for Habitat.
