The St. Louis Senior Dog Project is an exemplary organization whose mission is to find homes for older animals who are often forgotten and left behind due to various circumstances. STLSDP, is foster-based program, endowed with compassionate volunteers, who provide medical, physical and emotional care before their rescues are placed into their forever homes, It is often the last hope for these older animals. I applaud their diligence in the adoption process as well, as it ensures the most successful placement for every animal..
Adopting several senior dogs through STLSDP has been extremely rewarding. Every dog we have adopted has brought immense joy and love into our family. These older animals desperately need a safe and loving home to finish out their remaining years. Please adopt an older pet, and thank you to STLSDP for providing these loving animals with the consistent and compassionate care they so richly deserve. Outstanding organization!
We found Stl. Senior dog project at a local pet store. It was adoption day and we fell in love with Daisy and Bear. They were a brother and sister whose human had passed. They were 11 years old at the time. They quickly became a part of our family. We were so lucky to be blessed by them. Bear was only with us a short time and Daisy was nearly 14 when she gained her wings. We then adopted Shep. His human was going into a nursing home. We were blessed to have him in our hearts for several years. He was 11 when he came to us and we recently lost him. We will never fully recover from his absence. We adopted Tippy a 1 1/2 years ago. She was a surrender. Shy, scared, and deeply loved. She is a healthy happy little princess. She was 8 when she came to us. We are truly blessed by her. She has taught us patience, tenderness and pure joy. We recently adopted another surrender. He is a little guy at the ripe old age of 9 months. He keeps our family, including Tippy, on our toes. His name is Tadpole and he is our baby. What a wonderful job Stl. Senior project does. We are so happy with our babies. Thank you for taking such great care of these little ones.

The volunteer I spoke with was very rude over email and would not allow anyone outside of 2 hours from St. Louis to meet any of the dogs. I feel sorry for all the missed opportunities these dogs have for a good home based on the attitudes of the volunteers.
Great idea for a rescue organization. Totally staffed by volunteers. However, I suggest they add a disclaimer to their application - "Not having a regular vet on file is an automatic disqualifier." This way people won't waste their time if they are new pet owners who've never needed a vet or previous pet owners whose pets were so long ago that no recent vet files exist. People in these categories should not even waste their time with this organization. I haven't needed vet services for 15 years yet I was left with the impression that some staff thought I was lying about it. There are lots of rescue services available. This one clearly isn't for most people.
I would give it zero stars if I could. I inquired about a dog for adoption, filled out all necessary paperwork, and then got an email from the foster mom saying the dog is not a good pick for me. I was very disappointed to hear this, especially when they didn't schedule a home visit, or a face to face meeting. They said that the issue was not having a fence to which I told them could be remedied easily enough. No call backs, very unprofessional. I had plenty of people to vouch for me as to the fact that I would be able to provide a nice clean home, stability, and proper care. Yet the answer was still no. Contacting the BBB.
Agador has changed his ears are coming up. His original name was Parker when I adopted him. He is very sweet.
I adopted a dog from your org. Recently.. She looked nothing like her bio pic and we were shocked at her appearance. But what really upset us were the fibs told in her bio and the stories heard fromthe foster mom.
Usually, senior citizens adopting a senior animal are given a discount. The foster said she checked and there was no discount for this dog, even though the vet, after taking a good look at her, aged her at nine, the foster mom told me the org. Didn't think that was correct, and Took it upon itself to change her age. This was based this on the color of her teeth, even though the 3 upper teeth between her longer canines are worn clean to the gum line.
This animal was kept pregnant and starving. She has a full cataract in one eye and she's every bit of 9.
Bio said potty trained or mostly so. The dog is not potty trained at all and at 75 I have a job ahead of me trying to potty train a 9yr old who has never had any training. The foster mom has a doggy door and several other dogs in her home. This little one was just following them out and in.
Bio said good with dogs. Maybe that will come, right now she's not very tolerant.
Why wa No attempt made to Clean her? she stunk.! There are inexpensive dry coat cleaners for pets and they work, so even if the dog couldn't be fully bathed due to injury or stitches, there's no excuse for letting her being dirty and smelling so bad.
I don't begrudge you the money, I'm not faulting anyone about the hacked haircut or the fact that she is severely underweight. What bothers us is not being told the truth. This little one will be loved and cared for, but not being truthful is why so many dogs are returned. We understand you are trying to get them adopted, but would be adopters need to know , to the best of your knowledge, what they are dealing with and what lies ahead. we need to be as well informed as possible to make such an important, and what should be, informed decision.
Thank you
This group has many caring volunteers. Some foster dogs, some fund raise, and some help at events. The volunteers are wonderful, hard-working people. St Louis Senior Dog project saves the lives of hundred of dogs each year. They help small dogs, large dogs, older dogs and young dog. They find home for strays, abused dogs, puppy mill survivors and any dog who has needs. They can use your help as a volunteer, an adoptor, or with a donation.

I am new to this group since March 2010. It has been a pleasure to meet the individual volunteers who do so much for all the dogs for whom we find homes. Great love for all dogs energizes the group to find the best home for each dog. Our fund raising committee works many hours to raise money to pay for medical needs for our dogs which often the adoption fee is not enough to cover the dentals, shots, microchips, spay/neuter, and any other medical care needed. I am proud to be a foster parent for this group.
I adopted a dog from St. Louis Senior Dog Project in 2006. He was a difficult foster but they stuck with him for almost a year and waited for his forever home (mine!). I will be eternally grateful to them for that.
I have been a volunteer since Fall 2009. I love that we are able to give dogs that would otherwise be put to sleep a second chance. As a newer volunteer, there are plenty of experienced people within the group who I can reach out to for advice. I had the unfortunate experience of having a foster dog escape from a yard. A lot of the group volunteers helped search for the dog for almost a month. Their physical and emotional assistance helped my sanity.
One of the great things about this group is that as a foster parent, you can choose the dog you want to foster so it fits best with your household.
My family adopted a Senior dog this fall. The foster mom spent an extraordinary amount of time with us, telling us everything she knew about our new dog. It was clear the foster mother, and the entire organization, cares tremendously about these dogs! Yeah for St Louis Senior Dog Project!
The St. Louis Senior Dog Project is a non-profit dog (&, occasionally, cat) rescue organization that specializes in older dogs, but takes in and finds homes for dogs of all ages. They understand that, no matter the pet's age, every animal deserves to find happiness within a forever home.
I fostered several dogs through the St. Louis Senior Dog Project over the course of a year & a half. The volunteers were always professional, caring, & respectful to both the animals & potential adoptive owners. They understand the the needs of the animals, & they work hard to ensure that the dogs & cats are placed with the best-suited human.
I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this organization. I only stopped fostering because I fell in love with one of my fosters, & I knew that she was more than just a foster: she was destined to be part of my family!
The St. Louis Senior Dog Project is a fantastic animal rescue, & I continue to recommend them to anyone looking for a forever friend!
We adopted our dog, Baxter, from the St. Louis Senior Dog Project in November 2009. We were really impressed with how much love and care they give to every dog they foster. They really do their research on the people wanting to adopt.
I am also very impressed with Ellen's blog and love reading about all of the stories of the STLSDP and their amazing rescues!
They are obviously a very trustworthy, caring organization. I have recommended them anywhere I can. Thank you!
I adopted my dog from St. Louis Senior Dog Project in October of 2009, and I couldn't be happier! The staff was excellent and friendly, I spoke with them ahead of time and then picked him up at an adoption event at Petco in Kirkwood. They're great about sending me updates about the Dog Project, even after I moved away, and my dog is the most fantastic investment I ever could have made!
