Causes: Environment, Land Resources Conservation
Mission: The purpose of Headwaters Land Conservancy is to protect the natural diversity and beauty of northeast Michigan by preserving significant lands, scenic areas and fostering appreciation and understanding of the environment. Headwaters land conservancy holds 86 conservation easements and 6 nature preserves within our 11 county service area, protecting 10,877 acres of land and 32 miles of waterfront, in perpetuity.
Programs: 1000 feet of undeveloped riverfront was protected on the north branch of the ausable river, a state designated "natural river" in crawford county. The easement property provides vital corridors for wetland and upland wildlife. This parcel includes significant habitat in which fish, plants and the ecosystems that support them thrive in a natural state. The land is also adjacent to a large tract of state land, increasing the natural "greenway" for wildlife.
a second conservation easement was placed on the last undeveloped tract of shoreline on otsego lake in otsego county. This brings total protection of otsego lake to three conservation easements, 2,455 feet of protected waterfront and 76 acres of protected forest. The otsego lake property is of great significance as it helps to improve water quality by stabilizing the shoreline and filtering sediment with trees and vegetation left in an undisturbed state at the water's edge.
numerous programs and community events were performed throughout the year. Land protection work resulted in site visits to approximately 12 potential conservation easement properties and the completion of at least 3 land management plans. More than 50 property owners were contracted regarding conservation values on their land. 100% of all conservation easements were monitored and a risk assessment matrix was created for all properties held by headwaters.
