Mission: Recognizing isolation and loss of camaraderie as factors contributing to the tragedy of more than twenty two military veterans committing suicide each day, Heroes Outreach Program (HOPe) establishes local outreach gatherings in communities to provide awareness, education, and prevention resources.
Results: The success of our program is measured in what 'doesn't' happen with the veterans we interact with. By providing a safe environment and a free meal, veterans are able to relax and be among people they know already understand the pressures a veteran feels from everyday life. As a result of having this outlet, we find that veterans and first responders are less likely to commit suicide or remain depressed for an extended length of time. Just last night I had the wife of a Vietnam veteran, who has suffered with isolation and trust issues for decades, come up to me, hug me and say that she just wanted me to know that since he has been attending the weekly Gatherings, she has seen a huge improvement in him. She was very grateful.
