After many years in Eastern Europe I moved back to the States at the end of 2015. I knew it was time to write my book. The story of my Aorta dissection and the 9 1/2 weeks that followed, 3 countries, 3 hospitals, 3 diagnosis, before getting the needed surgery. Now here I am 24 years later getting my thoughts together to write that story intertwined with my journey of Faith. I knew I needed quiet and beauty around me to start this manuscript. I found that at Shepherds Refuge. I loved the cabin, the walks and talks with God, my interaction with Ruedi and Sandy and the north Georgia mountains. I began my book there and hope it to be released very soon. Thank you to all who made my visit possible.

As the hostess of a missionary guesthouse myself I rarely have an opportunity to get away myself. As I walked into the room for me I broke into tears for the special warmth I felt for me. The hosts are very welcoming and that atmosphere is so lovely. It's a beautiful, peaceful place in the mountains. I highly recommend it and have referred many of my guests to Shepherd 's Refuge.

My wife and I were blessed more than once, when we spent a week with Reudi and Sandy at Shepherds Refuge. We served as missionaries for over 20 years and the opportunity to get away for a refreshing, recharging and renewing week in the mountains was an exceptional treat. This is not a "job" to them and their group of volunteers who building the cabins. This is a calling, a ministry to God's people. We have been blessed by Shepherds Refuge in the past and perhaps we can visit again someday in the future.

Dios mio! Who encourages the encouragers? Other encouragers! Like Rhuedi and Sandi, who invite weary leaders into their home in order to serve them, with excellence. I have never been around them, that I did not come away a richer person. Their spirit led, spirit filled love for others is contagious and has ripple effects far beyond their borders. We would take our son there for work days that you knew were a good investment. Shepards Refuge may not be world famous, but it's world class!

Pastor Rudi and Sandy are Pastors to Pastors. They have built a refuge for Pastors that need some quiet time from the pressures and demands of their ministries. Their lives are devoted to serving those who serve. Many, many have come to experience the Presence of God and in the quiet and peaceful surrounding they are able to get clear direction, healing and whatever else they need from the Lord. I was studying for my dissertation while leading my congregation and needed a sabbatical to regroup. What a wonderful experience I had at Shepherds Retreat. The host were marvelous and I was able to spend quiet time with my lord, get started on my dissertation (started in February and finished in May after procrastinating for two years for my doctorate). Reudi and Sandy have built a beautiful, peaceful retreat that is close to all the amenities (spas, wineries, waterfalls, shopping, etc...) while still being incredibly private. Shepherds Refuge is a great ministry. My wife and I have been several times. It is a place to pause, reflect, rest and connect with the Lord. The Lord has blessed and encouraged us in our ministry as we have taken the time to come away from all the stresses of ministry and just focus on the Lord. Now as a Mission Strategist for Tugalo Association I am encouraging our pastors to take some time away from the business of ministry and to enjoy and benefit from time alone with the Lord. Shepherds Refuge is a God-send and a great blessing to so many that need time with the Lord.

My wife and I stayed at Shepherds Refuge in 2018. We really needed a getaway to reevaluate what God was doing in our ministry. The hospitality was gracious, our room upstairs was great. (Favorite, was the whirlpool tub.) Privacy was at a premium and we only interacted with the owners of the home when we chose to. We had many opportunities to take in the view from the back deck overlooking the mountains and we could hear God's voice. This time alone with the Pastors wife was much needed and will always be cherished. Hopefully we will return again someday for the solitude.

Shepherd's Refuge is a wonderful place, located in a beautiful part of the country. Nestled in the woods atop a mountain in Northeastern Georgia, it is a peaceful haven for those in ministry that need some time away to relax and be rejuvenated. Two very comfortable log cabins and a private room in the host's home are made available for those in full time ministry that need a refreshing time away from all of their many responsibilities. My wife and I have been blessed to spend a week there at three different times. The hosts - Ruedi and Sandy are a such a joy, and our times spent there have been a real gift to us. Shepherds Refuge lived up to its name and I highly recommend it for pastors and ministry leaders. My wife and I began our sabbatical enjoying a cabin tucked away and unplugged from the world at Shepherds Refuge. The cabin had everything we needed to just focus on our relationship with God and one another. We went on hikes and prayer walks around the cabin and visited local sight seeing venues. Ruedi and Sandy invited us for lunch and we got to share our stories of how God has moved in our lives. The whole time was more than we could ask or imagine. That is how God refreshes the hearts of the saints. I recommend and support this needed effort and hope that many of my colleagues will take the time to take refuge with the Selah ministries. Our goal is to return soon to Shepherds Refuge.

We have experienced unmatched hospitality and true sabbath rest, at Shepherd's Refuge, several times, in the past 10 years. It has become our favorite place to seek rest and refreshment in the Lord's presence, whenever we come back to the United States, from service abroad. From the moment you arrive there, you feel the LOVE - from the warm greeting of the hosts, to the delicious home-cooked meals, from the beauty of the property to the sereine atmosphere bathed in the prayers of the team of intercessors, from authentic fellowship to the blessing of "silence", everything speaks of our great Father's love, which refreshes the parched recesses of our souls. A much-needed stop in our frantic lives. A place to come back to. An invitation to cultivate that place of rest and intimacy with the Father, wherever we are.
The service provided to "clients" (pastors and missionaries) is outstanding. A great example of excellence and true dedication on the part of the Shepherd's Refuge team. A big shoutout to all!

Shepherd's Refuge- Selah Ministries Inc. provided a much needed respite for me and opportunity to get away and reconnect with God. Which has enabled me to not only grow deeper in my relationship with God, but in turn has impacted those I serve every day. Without their ministry I would not have been able to afford to have the much needed sabbatical to grow and to heal and to hear from God as to what was in the next season ahead of serving. Reudi and Sandi's hospitality and compassion for pastors and lay ministers and their sweet spirits and heart for God are truly a gift and I am so grateful that they have chosen to share that gift with others.

My wife and I have been to Shepherds Refuge twice through the years, the stays separated by ten years. The first stay came at a time of discernment for what's next in ministry for us. Through our warm hosts and home we did hear from the Lord, a still small assurance. The second came as part of a long needed sabbatical. My wife and spent unhurried time, healing, reading to each other, walking, exploring, praying and just being together. Both experiences affirmed the work of God within and refreshed our souls for the next leg of the journey. And thanks for the exceptional hospitality and kind hearts and souls of our hosts.

Ruedi and Sandy were wonderful hosts for our three night of resting and refreshing. We came back a few years later as the first guest to stay at the Selah Cabin, a facility that we supported with financial gifts. We were glad that we could be both "clients served" and "donors" for this ministry. We knew what a blessing it would be of more persons could get away to Shepherds Refuge to get recharged for ministry. My husband who is a pastor of care and counseling and myself stayed with Shepherds Refuge for a week to "get away" and truly felt refreshed after times of solitude, hiking nearby forests, whitewater rafting and most of all the kind hospitality of our hosts. They "went the extra mile" to let us do laundry, share an occasional meal, use all their facilities, pet their dog - it felt like home! They were willing to listen without being intrusive and shared of their own lives in such a way that we felt an instant kinship with them. To all who help provide this special place, THANK YOU!!!

I had the blessing of staying at Shepherd's Refuge in April of 2015. I was at a time in my life when I was mourning the loss of my younger brother and was feeling overwhelmed by the responsibilities of ministry. I have no doubt it was the LORD who led me to this blessed place; as nine days after my return home I lost my mother. While nothing can prepare one for such a devastating loss, I believe God allowed me this time of rest and restoration to strengthen me for what was to come.

Pastors Ruedi and Sandy received me with such love that I immediately felt at home. During my stay, I was honored to sit at their table for various meals. More than the delicious food, however, the greater blessing was the opportunity to listen to them relay stories from the many years of ministry experience that God has afforded them. Shepherds Refuge sits in an idyllic location, tucked away, in a world all its own. I had times of refreshing as I walked the grounds, as I spent time alone in my quarters - aptly named "The Upper Room", driving through the quaint nearby towns, sitting on the wraparound porch enjoying the majestic views, or just spending time in their beautiful den with their gorgeous dog.

Shepherd's Refuge is a place like no other and I am eternally grateful for it and the ministry of Pastors Ruedi and Sandy.

My wife and I absolutely fell in love with this place. To be able to go to a place and have peace and quite from the everyday hustle and bustle of a pastor's life is beyond words. If you are a pastor, you MUST go here. Everyday I would walk the trails and sit on a prayer bench and do nothing but listen to the leaves fall (and yes you can hear them falling), the birds singing and the squirrels playing. It was so refreshing. We have already made our reservations for 2015 and 2016. It will be our annual retreat as long as the good Lord allows us to go. You cannot go wrong in coming here if you need refreshed.

I found shepherd's refuge in a particular point of need. Not only were they available but their particular ministry enabled me to meet specific personal and ministry goals during my time with them. The Lord used that time in special ways! Ruedi and Sandy Mettler are amazing servants and now dear fellow-believers that I would consider long-term friends. The setting and facilities of Shepherd's Refuge are well suited to their goals of providing a quiet, beautiful, close to nature opportunity to recover, recharge, and recalibrate in the Lord and in His Word. I thank the Lord for Shepherd's Refuge.

Wow. What an incredible blessing Shepherd's Refuge is to pastors.

Balancing marriage, family & ministry all on a shoe-string budget is difficult. Wouldn't trade it for anything, but it is tough. Providing a place for my wife and I to slow down and be together with each other and the Lord is such a blessing.

I believe investing in Shepherd's Refuge not only blesses pastors, marriages, but also the congregations they serve. Thank you for blessing our family and our people.

I found my time there to be some of the best days spent recharging and frequently speak of my time to those in need of time way. I hope to take some more time away there soon. Shepherds Refuge is an amazing ministry to care for weary pastors and ministry leaders. The grounds and facilities are immaculate. Sandy and Ruedi take wonderful care of their guests. They look at taking care of pastors and ministry leaders as their personal ministry assignment, and from what we experienced, they take their ministry assignment seriously! It has been about three years since our visit, and my husband and I still fondly talk about the experience! It was truly a time of recharging, refocusing and refreshing. We highly recommend Shepherds Refuge for pastors who need a time of refreshing. We also highly recommend Shepherds Refuge to receive any sponsorships and donations!

My husband, Andrew and I have been with a mission agency for 40 years. Part of his ministry involves being out of the country three or four times/year on lengthy trips. We both have very full schedules. This past January, we both badly needed some quiet, restful time away before his first trip for the year began. Shepherd's Refuge was the perfect place for us to go. The location is beautiful, private and peaceful and the cabin far exceeded our expectations. We did lots of hiking to beautiful waterfalls, as well as just sitting on the porch and reading and reflecting, enjoying the peace. Ruedi and Sandi were wonderful hosts. We enjoyed the opportunity to visit with them and get to know them and their heart for ministry. At the same time, they made it known that if what we wanted was just solitude, that that was fine, too. We enjoyed both and the freedom to do that. It was just what we needed to feel renewed, restored and ready to go again. We're grateful for the opportunity and look forward to returning there.

I'm a missionary preparing for my first term of service overseas, and the last year and a half has been a whirlwind of applications, partnership development, cross-cultural training, professional training, and packing. About a month ago, I started to realize that the wear and tear of going, going, going without taking a break or taking time to be quiet with the Lord was overwhelming me. I needed a place to go away and be quiet for a little while, and Shepherd's Refuge was the perfect place to do that. The location was beautiful, the hosts are wonderful, and the ministry is such a blessing. I would recommend it to anyone in ministry who needs a chance to spend some time with the Lord and to be at rest.

My wife and I spent a much-needed week of rest, refreshment and renewal in July 2015 at Shepherds Refuge. I have participated in other Pastor renewal programs, and this by far is our favorite. We stayed in the Selah cabin and absolutely loved it. It was quiet, secluded, and technology-free . . . which was what we needed. We spent a lot of time sitting on the front porch rockers just talking and enjoying the beauty of God's creation and the soul-refreshing quiet. The cabin is absolutely beautiful and has everything we needed for a week of solitude (as a couple) and renewal. We cannot wait for the chance to return if that opportunity affords itself.

My wife and I were in Chattanooga for a conference, and before flying back to the busyness of family life and church ministry in Southern California, we were blessed with a couple days at Shepherd's Refuge. It was a perfect place to unwind and process all that we had taken in at the conference--Reudi and Sandy were available to cook meals or chat, but at the same time gave us plenty of space to be alone with God and one another. My wife and I discovered Shepherd's Refuge through a search on the internet. After checking it out, we inquired about a week's stay. We were accepted and we spent some much-needed time away there last summer. It was a great haven of rest for the two of us. It is close to many things to see and do, yet it is a wonderful place to get away from it all. It is a wonderful place where you can slow down the pace, and allow the Lord to renew your soul.
Our thanks to Ruedi and Sandy, who were very gracious hosts, for following the Lord's lead and creating this special refuge for those in the ministry. Our thanks to the board of directors who oversee the ministry, to all of the volunteers who helped to build the beautiful cabins, and to all who support the ministry with their prayers and financial support. After many stressful months struggling in a wilderness within my ministry at my church along with my wife, who was granted her first clergy appointment after many years of serving within a church as staff, our stress level had reached a maximum. This was our second retreat at Shepherds Refuge-Selah Ministries. The afternoon we arrived, we both felt the Holy Spirit lift our burdens from our shoulders. As we entered the cabin, we felt as if we were entering into the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ, just to find rest. And rest we did find. As we disconnected from the world by turning off our phones, accessing no internet, and placing our souls at the feet of Jesus in the beautiful mountain setting that is Shepherds Refuge. For the first three day, we mostly sleep, relaxed, and meditated upon God's Word. The for remaining four days we explored the mountains around us by taking a trip to Brasstown Bald Mountain, the highest mountain in Georgia, traveled to Blue Ridge, GA, and various lakes near by. When we departs, our souls and bodies had found the rest we need and the spirits felt one with God's Spirit. This is a special place, offered by special people, for those called by God to find rest and to be revived.

These people are committed to serving the Father in the manner that He has called them to serve . . . moreover, the manner in which they do it is unlike the simple provision of room and board. Both of them go all out to treat their guests like royalty, and the accommodations are both superb and picturesque. Any and all travelers who are fortunate enough to enjoy their hospitality and genuine warmth are indeed favored by and of the Father.

As the wife of a bi-vocational pastor, I can tell you there is no place like Shepherd's Refuge. Even though my husband is retired from one job he still farms a small acreage farm and pastors a rural church. Balancing all these responsibilities often causes us to lose touch with the really important things like being alone with God and time for each other. Shepherd's Refuge provides that peaceful, calm place where we can walk trails together, sit beside each other and read, or just get out and enjoy the beauty of nature. Those called to the Gospel ministry of Jesus Christ are required to walk by faith and not by sight. A job description that challenges the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual areas of life. The hosts are deeply spiritual, attentive, and available; yet very perceptive to your need for privacy. Shepherd's Refuge is God's gift to weary ministers.

We broke bread together at each meal and enjoyed DELICIOUS, healthy food (thank you, Sandy!). Our spirits were renewed, our weary bodies were refreshed, and our heavy load was lightened as we fellowshipped with our hosts, as we sat back and relaxed by the fireplace, as we had quiet moments in the Word, and as we went for walks together admiring God's beautiful creation. In 2007 my wife and I felt led to resign a 15 year pastorate without another ministry to begin. We were not forced out, but felt that we had done all we could in the present charge.
We knew we needed some time away, and took a three-month sabbatical at our own expense, to prepare for the next phase of our ministry. We spent a week at Shepherd's Refuge and it was such a refreshing, uplifting, quiet, and healing time. Just to be in that beautiful setting and focus upon the Lord was rejuvenating. Sandy & Ruedi were such gracious hosts and made us feel like family and so comfortable in their home and lives.
The only time I wish we were wealthy is when I wish I could help support what they do. God's hand of blessing is upon this ministry that I am sure has helped so many of His servants continue in and be refreshed for their ministry, as it did for us.

In 2007 my husband and I needed a place to get away to seek the Lord. We are ordained ministers and we were in the middle of so much change in our lives, that it was difficult to hear from the Lord. The Lord spoke to us to get away for some time of prayer.

We heard through another friend who is a Pastor about Sheperds Refuge, and decided to make a call. Ruedi and Sandy got us in the doors quickly (which we so much appreciated). And we began our time of prayer and seeking the Lord.

The time there was SO refreshing, I can not even describe. Ruedi and Sandy were perfect hosts. They gave us our space but were there to cater to our every need. Wonderful conversation and meals when we wanted company. My husband and I spent a lot of time on the deck praying and waiting on the Lord to speak to us. Before the long weekend was over. The Lord spoke to both my husband and myself at exactly the same time confirming what it was we needed to hear. I really believe that if we did not have the Sheperd's Refuge to go to the summer of 2007 that we would have missed what God was speaking to us to do. We will always be thankful to Ruedi, Sandy and the people who support the Rufuge for having that time and the place to get before the Lord.

Thank you again, Ruedi and Sandy.
