Heartland Equine Rescue is a fantastic organization with caring, professional leadership. They care about every animal, and always do everything within their power to give each animal the care and support they need. Their mission is so important and much needed in this area. We are lucky to have them as a resource.
I adopted a 10 year old thoroughbred gelding named Catman! This rescue was incredible to work with. I needed to find a trail horse for my mom, an advanced beginner, who just wanted to leisurely ride. Deb and Jo-Claire were amazing to me and my mom. Catman is now named “Duke”
These people are the best there is. They help so many animals and people in so many ways. Without them I would of had to surrender my horse Dixie,of 20yrs with me. Dixie had uveitis and she needed her eye removed I did not have the money for the removal of her eye and instead of letting her suffer I was going to surrender her no matter how hard it broke my heart but I knew she needed the surgery. The Angels at heartland equine set up a GoFundMe page for her. They provided the vehicle and trailer to take her up there and to bring her back home and the surgery was all paid for. They were refusing to take money from me but I was still able to slip them some in a card before they left after they drop Dixie back off to me. So I try every month to send some money to them. They just do so much and because of them I get to keep my girl with me. They just helped in so many ways.
I became aware of this organization about a year ago. I have donated to them, and I also volunteer at least 1-3 days a week approx 3-5 hours a time. These people are top notch in every way. They live and breathe saving and rehabilitating abused equines. I love working with them and the animals! They love the animals and treat them gently at all times! They get the best farriers and vets they can find and don’t scrimp on care. They are a fine 501c outfit and they use the funds for the animals, 100%. They don’t waste money on frivolities. The animals always come first! And it is heartbreaking to see some of the abused animals when they come in. But heart warming to see them after just a few days of loving treatment. You won’t find a better charitable organization, and my wife and I support several. We love interacting with the people and animals! Super organization!
The love and compassion that goes into all of the rescues I have had the honor to help through volunteering, at the Oakland City, facility, is amazing! Thanks to Karl and Kelly for all that you do.
I wish I was a millionaire. I would donate so much to this valuable rescue. Horses, ponies, and other equines tend to be overlooked when it comes to rescue. The caring hearts at Heartland Equine Rescue do everything within their means to help the horses in need. Vet bills, feed, pasture room, stalls, outdoor runs , equipment, transportation, and the endless hours of love and care to help these beautiful, sometimes abused, mistreated, forgotten animals. Not an easy task. I knew of a horse that was not taken care of, no food, water, shelter, and pinned up in a tiny muddy area with not one blade of grass. Due to lack of laws in Floyd County Indiana pertaining to “livestock” it took over a year before they could help this poor boy. Unfortunately, he has cancer and has 6 months or so left. They shared a picture of Kahn a week after they got him and the change was remarkable. They will make sure that whatever time he has left will be happy.
There are many stories of other rescues also.
Heartland Equine Rescue is a blessing to Indiana. I send what I can to help with the cost of saving these animals, but oh if I were a millionaire. ❤️
This place goes above and beyond to help save the horses and other animals too. It’s the love and the care that they put into every horse they take in.. that is just amazing to me. Their care is just something else with the top veterinarians coming in from the area.. and the helpers that continue the care of these horses and like a lot of us.. they fall in love with these animals. They defiantly put their hearts and souls in helping these animals. And thank you Heartland Equine!!
Heartland Equine Rescue was such a blessing to me and my husband. We are in our 70's and had a horse and mini donkey for years as pasture pets. Last January it became necessary to rehome them due to our health. The horse was overweight, tender footed and needed a refresher training course to become adoptable. We were not in a position to manage those issues on our own. I reached out to Heartland and they took both the donkey and horse into foster care, handled the needs of the horse and got them both placed in wonderful homes. This was not the normal neglect case that they so often deal with, but rather a rescue of much loved pets needing new homes to thrive. Heartland was so very compassionate during the foster care period and placement. I felt like I still had a voice in the rehoming of our pets. We can't thank them enough for the work they do!
Excellent care of the animals and works with local law enforcement and animal controls to ensure horses and sometimes other animals safety and care. Also assists with Owner Assisted Placement when an owner needs to rehome their horse, yet wants to ensure they get a good home where the horse will be tracked for life. The horse stays with the owner until that home is found.
Recently adopted through Heartland and couldn’t have asked for a better experience! Great, caring people that help every step of the way. Looking forward to working with Heartland Equine Rescue again in the future!
Do not trust this organization. They are only transparent when it suits them. Who is really on their board of directors?
I know several of the staff personally and highly recommend this rescue to anyone! They truest care for the well being of the livestock and horses they get in their care versus most being there for the money claiming to be rescues 10/10 recommend heartland to anyone
I adopted my horse Bailey from this wonderful rescue. They were called in to rescue her and her brother. They had literally been starved and not been cared for in years. Through the wonderful donations given to the rescue they were able to save both of the horses. It took months of love and care and medical attention but they are heathy and happy now. I adopted Bailey and my parents adopted Gunner. We wanted them to stay together. The ladies who run the rescue are hero’s in our eyes. They unselfishly sacrifice their time and own personal money to give life to horses. Donations are such a blessing when they receive them. Everything goes straight to saving more horses and caring for the ones they have rescued. Thank you Heartland without you we would have never met our heart horses!
My daughter stated volunteering for Heartland Equine Rescue and fell in love with it and their mission. The rest of our family soon followed behind her once we seen all the love and care they have for the horses they take in. They are so dedicated to getting the horses healthy and finding great forever homes for them. My family has adopted four horses through this rescue!
This rescue always puts the animal first. It has taken on some pretty extreme cases over the years. One of the most heartfelt was Owen, a pony with cancer overtaking his ear. After numerous months of treatments, love and their care he is now cancer free. Takoda, saved from an auction barn, rack of bones under saddle (see picture). Brought back to health and is a thriving gorgeous paint (see picture) after a few months of proper feed and love. Not all they take on are success stories and a piece of their hearts tend to go on with the ones they lose. As in JJ's case, he was an off track Thoroughbred auctioned and needing a home. Heartland Equine Rescue was willing to give JJ (see picture) that second chance, little did they know after vetted JJ was in kidney failure and was humanely put down when treatment came to late for this beautiful guy.
Heartland Equine Rescue provide vet care, farriers, and any other specialized care any of their animals need to get them healthy to provide them with a second chance at life or a forever home. The Owners and Volunteers put their heart and soul in to every case. This day in time all rescues are struggling to stay afloat as donations dewendle and I can only pray that this rescue remains open for all the good they have done and will continue to do.
Thanks to this amazing group we were able to give a mare and foal that were starving to death a new chance at life. The work that they do is selfless. Couldn't be happier to support the work that they do.
As a police officer, I sometimes need the help of a rescue organization to assist me with the neglected and abused animals that I encounter. Heartland Equine Rescue has been a blessing to me and to the animals in need of help. They always respond no matter the circumstances, and always go above and beyond my expectations. They work tirelessly for as long as it takes to rehabilitate and re-home these animals. No task is too big or too difficult. Our county could not do without this wonderful organization and their tireless dedication.
I have been apart of heartland 13 years now. You will not find a better group of people dedicated to helping horses. It is alot of hard work, both physically and emotionally. But we do it for the horses. And we will continue to help everyone we can!
Wonderful group of people , doing great work , fosters have beautiful well cared for facilities and the animals are very happy.
Wonderful Rescue to adopt from!!! We have two beautiful mares from them ; and will be getting two handsome donkeys in the next 2 weeks!!!! The Rescue is so easy to work with, they take 1st rate care of all the animals!!!
My granddaughter witnessed a horrific crime against her mother when she was only four years old. Due to the trauma it cost her she had to be admitted to a psychiatric facility for crisis intervention. She was diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and depression. That is very hard to understand when you’re so young. As the days went by she gradually withdrew more inside of herself and was showing no emotion. I had horses growing up so I had the idea that possibly a horse would be able to connect with her. I was browsing Facebook and saw a post from them about a horse named Karma. Hannah my granddaughter, and I went to visit Carmen at the rescue. We learned that karma had been abused in her past as well. They connected immediately and we were able to adopt karma. It has made a world of difference in Hannah’s mental health. I cannot think heartland equine rescue enough for how they helped us. Since then I went onto adopt more horses from them and I am now a volunteer.
So so impressed!
Such kindness and courtesy , felt so comfortable speaking with them
Above and beyond grateful for Heartland
I adopted a poa and a mare from heartland. Great people and great horses. They are great people doing great things for these animals.
Heartland, has been a savior to many horses in both Indiana and Kentucky for many, many years.
Horses coming from neglect cases, saved from going to slaughter, and other sad situations, have found a new lease on life and if adoptable, went on to carefully screened new homes.
With everyone at heartland being a volunteer, you know that your donation is used for the care of the horses.
Heartland has a Facebook page where you can meet all the horses, read their stories and follow their progress :

I've followed for over a year now and donate when I can. I have seen the before and afters. The work they do is absolutely amazing.
The love they give to to horses that need a second change is unmatched.
Thank you for all you do and second chances.
I’ve been involved with Heartland for about 3 years now. I have helped rescue horses, take them to vets, give them their medicine, love on them and pray for them. Heartland takes in the unwanted, the throw aways, the forgotten. It takes time to gain the trust of a neglected or abused animal. These folks pour their hearts out to these animals. Even the ones that knowing we have to let them go is the kindest thing to do. These animals get the care and the love that they should have always gotten. There are many that are too I’ll for adoption so they become the pasture ornaments. The faces of rescue, the lucky ones to have landed at Heartland and not the meat wagons. This non profit deserves any and all help that can be offered. I wish I could afford to help them more than I am. Just like every “business” if the funds aren’t there, doors can close. It would be a huge injustice to let this happen. Please help
Heartland Equine Rescue is tremendous in the tireless work that they do. They not only rescue and rehabilitate but they helped me personally In transporting my horse to a veterinarian a couple of hours away for her surgery since I didn’t have a horse trailer. Can’t say enough good about these wonderful people!
I absolutely love this place! A mare that everyone said “put her down, she has little to no chance to recover”. Heartland dug their heels in and held on for the long haul. The mare is thriving and happy now. These folks have gone above and beyond for every creature at their farm. They will always be number the number one non profit in my heart.
Being a lover of Standardbreds, I came across one in a kill lot that stole my heart. I went on a mission to get him safe. Heartland took him in. He stole their heart too and they made him a permanent resident until his passing from EPM. They did everything they could possibly do for him. He passed with dignity, peace and love. They go above and beyond with every animal they take in. There are countless stories. The love and care and time they give is immeasurable. I wish I lived closer so I could assist in what they do. I recently did a fund raiser for them because they deserve every penny that is donated.
