Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: We are a all volunteer 501c3 (since 2004) non profit animal rescue organization that works with the rescue, adoption, transport & sanctuary of companion animals & equines in need. We pull from local (and non local) high kill shelters as well as accepting owner surrendered animals in need. We also work within our community to offer help with spay/neuter & vetting needs for people wishing to keep their pets but who can't afford the costs. We have a program in place for pet food donations as well as doghouses/bedding (during winter months for pets kept outside) for owners who need a little help to keep their pets with them rather than turning them in to the shelters. We have a hospice program in place for animals needing a final stage of life home as well. We take medical needs dogs that other rescues turn down (currently treating several HW+ dogs) as well as the harder to place breeds. We work from foster homes/no physical shelter building (no boarding kennels) and all animals are in homes waiting for their families to find them.

Our little foster, Bailey, leaped into our hearts after being pulled from a local shelter by Lost Fantasy Rescue. Bailey was suffering from pyometra, several Large mammory tumors, a mouth full of rotten teeth, and skin and bones. Lost Fantasy immediately got her into their vet where she was spayed, Vaccinated, had a full dental, several tumors removed, and eventually a mastectomy. We became foster fails and adopted Bailey. We ultimately lost her to lung cancer, but she was loved and cared for up until her last breath. All thanks to the love, compassion, and dedication this wonderful little SWVA rescue showed her and so many others. We will always be thankful for Lost Fantasy and their tireless efforts to save the neglected, abused, forgotten animals of SWVA and surrounding areas. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you!!

Our little foster, Bailey, took a great big leap into our family’s heart after she was pulled from a local shelter. She was suffering with pyometra, several large mammory tumors, a mouth full of rotten teeth, and poor nutrition. Lost Fantasy immediately had her spayed, vaccinated, full dental, several tumor removals, and ultimately a mastectomy. Although they always stretch their donations as far as possible, all necessary medical care is always provided when the animal is taken into their rescue. In the end, we became a foster fail and decided to adopt Bailey. We ultimately lost her to lung cancer but she was loved and cared for until the very end thanks to Lost Fantasy. We appreciate this little rescue and all their dedication to saving the lives of the neglected, abused, & forgotten. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you. Run free our sweet girl ❤️

I am the store manager at Big Walker Lookout on the Wythe/Bland County line. I do have a rescue dog, but one that I adopted before I met Sarah. I've known Sarah Dutton for several years and have never seen anyone work so hard and with such dedication as Sarah. If there is an animal in need, she is there no matter how small, large, or ill the animal may be. I ran a dog and cat boarding kennel for years both in CT and NY and have personally adopted many homeless strays over the years; I currently own four dogs, 12 indoor cats and 4 outside ferals. I have seen the love and care Sarah delivers to each and every one of her rescues and she has earned my eternal respect. I can't say that about too many people.

I found Smokey through Lost Fantasy a few months after my mother died. I've only ever rescued my dogs but never has a rescue been so thorough with their vetting process. They checked with our vet as to how well we cated for our animals, a home visit was done and a week later we picked Smokey up. Her foster "family", mom and 3 little girls, brought her to a mutual meeting place and the rescue director, Sarah, also came. You could tell Smokey was well taken care of and loved and I ALMOST felt guilty for taking her from those little girls. I was so impressed with this little rescue and thankful for their adoption process to ensure safe homes for their animals. Smokey was just what I needed at a very dark time in my life. Smokey rescued ME.

As a volunteer (and founding member) of Lost Fantasy for the last 20 years I can honestly say that the volunteers go above & beyond to get the animals the help they need to go on to find great new forever homes as well as doing their best within the community to offer not only food & housing assistance but also spay/neuter assistance for those who can't afford it.
Lost Fantasy specializes in neonatal & senior animals as well as taking in the hard luck/high medical cases that many other small rescues deny. They also work with other high adoption/no kill rescues across the state (as well as some surrounding states) to send adoptable animals to higher adoption areas where they are guaranteed to find homes.
This group lives what they preach every day & I am proud to be a small part of it.

I am a volunteer with Lost Fantasy Rescue and have been for the past 4 years. I love that the rescue has a passion for older dogs and cats. They make sure that all the animals they take in receive all the vetting they need to be happy and healthy. They work hard to stretch the funds they get to serve the needs of the animals. They also help members of the community who don't have the funds for food and vetting for their animals to reduce the rates of animal surrender. They work closely with shelters in the SW Virginia area and transfer animals to larger rescues when needed. This little rescue does so much with so little for SW Virginia. These are some of the sweet fosters I have had during my time with the rescue.

Wonderful folks to work with! Because of this fabulous rescue I've got the sweetest Beagle ever. Anytime I see Sarah out and about she always asks about Penelope. Anytime I know someone looking to add a new family member I reccomend Lost Fantasy Rescue.

Lost Fantasy Rescue is a wonderful nonprofit organization. The take in so many animals, small or big. They are quick to help the unhealthy and nurture them back to health. They take in the unwanted and unloved that so many overlook, then give these animals the best life they can possibly have. This rescue has taken in animals that are dying so that they can shown that love and kindness exists in their final days. These babies get a second chance at life and will never know abuse nor neglect again. I love this rescue and adopted my girl Maggie from them 2 years ago

I am one of the cat fosters for Lost Fantasy & I can tell you that the care they give their animals is top quality. There has never been a problem with the cats health that they haven't addressed (either with their vet or with mine). They give the animals all the time they need before they are adopted out & always take them back if the placement doesn't work.

This organization may be small & only foster based but the ladies that run it are in it for the right reason....the animals. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone who needs help with a pet.

Lost fantasy rescue is a wonderful organization that helps out every type of pet big or small young and old . We got a wonderful older dog from them his name was Jello he was a great companion to my daughter. She was 8 years old when Jello came into her life. She enjoyed the time her and Jello has together. He was the king of her life. She loved him so so much. We all miss him everyday. I just want to say I'm so glad lost fancy rescue took him out of the pound and gave him a second chance to meet my little girl. We can't ask for a more caring and upstanding rescue as lost fantasies. It has been a great pleasure working with them in fostering as well as being an adopter.

I offered to foster (2) 9 year old brother chihuahuas when their mom went into a nursing home. I had very little experience fostering, where to turn, who to trust.... I just wanted the best for my boys. LFR walked me through the process, informed me of options, gave me advice/information to consider, and did a courtesy post on their site of Scooter & Tanner. With their guidance and reference, I found another local rescue (LFR highly approved) that transported the boys to Richmond (RAL) where there they both have applications for adoption now!! Thank you for helping me and the sweet boys!

I currently am fostering our little special princess "Marigold".
Marigold is a senior female Feist who was found close to death on the side of the road. LFR saved this sweet girl and gave her the opportunity to change the ending of her story. She is safe and warm and fed in her own room while her "staff" waits on her like the princess she is. None of this would have been possible without LFR.
Someone is always available for questions or just to listen when you need it. As a foster Mom that is very important to me.
Thank you LFR for everything you do!!!!

LFR is full of beautiful volunteers that are made out of love for animals in need. My boyfriend and I have always been passionate about animals but never knew how to get our foot in the door to actually helping. From helping us set up transports to letting us play with sweet babies nonstop at fundraisers, LFR is doing what so many more people should which is simply showing love and compassion. I am absolutely in love with the work that they do, and I can’t wait to continue helping where I can and supporting this small, amazing rescue for forever.

As a volunteer for LFR, I know first-hand that this little rescue isn’t afraid to take on big things. We have lots of animals needing extensive medical care & usually those animals are transferred to our partner rescues once healthy & ready for adoption. LFR is not reimbursed; it is for the love of the animals that we do what we do & we depend solely on the support & donations from our community. Please help us to continue making a difference for these animals in need!

This rescue goes above and beyond for the animals, I have never seen a group work as hard as they do at saving innocent lives every single day. We are lucky to have Lost Fantasy around, if not for them- who knows how many animals we may have lost. Kudos to Sarah and her group for all they do!!!!!

We are so blessed to have Lost Fantasy in our community. I am the manager of the Wytheville, Va Tractor Supply and have worked closely with Lost Fantasy over the last 7 years. They are dedicated to the forgotten, less fortunate animals of our area, always going the extra mile to place as many animals as possible. I have worked with other rescues over the years that required donations or only took the "adoptable" dogs. One reason Lost Fantasty is so dear to my heart is because they do not dicriminate. They often take in senior pets and pets with serious health conditions. They are always willing to come out to support others and work hard to raise much needed funds.

I volunteer at a high kill shelter in Marion, VA - near Lost Fantasy Rescue. Many times there are animals that have no options left, their hold time has expired and they are scheduled for euthanization. One call to Sarah at Lost Fantasy and she is there, taking on a dog in need. Many times they are the dogs no one wants. Seniors, blind or disabled and puppies infested with parasites. She has saved many at the last minute. And cares for them and finds them new homes or rescues. This is the only local rescue in a 4 county stretch of rural SW Va, and county shelters are always at capacity with unwanted and neglected animals. Lost Fantasy is crucial to these animals

It had been more than 2 years since we had lost our 12 yr old schnauzer, Buster. He, just like the 3 pets before him, had been "inherited" from ailing family and we loved them all as if we had raised them from babies. Our hearts were finally in a place to adopt a new baby - this time tho we (selfishly) wanted a puppy. We fell in love with Penelope the first time her picture was posted by Lost Fantasy! And from the moment I made contact with Sarah Dutton I knew this was where our new baby had to come from. Throughout the application process, Lost Fantasy conducted themselves in the most professional manner. There is a very clear procedure to adopt - a very through application that included references, an essay, and a home visit. Keep in mind we live 3 states away in SC, but we knew from our interactions, her attention to details, and her sincere desire to ensure her animals were placed in the right homes, that Lost Fantasy cares. Really cares for these babies and as a result, they are taken care of in the respectful and loving way possible - just perfect! Ms Dutton's hard work, often at her own expense is remarkable and so very much appreciated - I would check with her first before adopting anywhere else!

Jordy is one I was lucky enough to adopt from her organization and I am beyond blessed to be associated with her and have been a helping hand at times when I could.

I met Sarah during a fund raising event in Wytheville several years back. Over the past couple of years I have gotten to know her and her rescue. She is the kindest hearted woman I have ever met. She genuinely cares about the animals and takes in the ones that most people overlook. She works her regular job then works with her animals and pulls from several local shelters in the surrounding area. I totally admire this woman, what she does and the professionalism with which she goes about doing it. Thanks Sarah for being a voice for those who do not have one!!

I met the director of this organization in Louisiana helping care for rescued animals after Hurricane Katrina. She impressed me right away and we stayed in touch, even though I live in Wisconsin. I learned of how much she does for the animals in an area where there are not many resources. She does a lot with a little. She looks at the big picture and helps the community solve overpopulation problems, cares for the animals that are currently in need and takes therapy animals to visit in the community. I was so impressed with Lost Fantasy's work on behalf of the animals in the community that I helped them raise funds, donated, and even adopted the most wonderful dog from them. Lost Fantasy rescued him from a man who was going to shoot him. He has been with me for over 10 years now and volunteers at the local library helping kids learn to read. I am very grateful to Lost Fantasy for saving my dog's life and know that they have also helped many others in times of crisis, when nobody else was there.

I work in the rescue field myself. Which means I typically have pretty good insight into the "good" and the "bad" of sheltering and rescue organizations. Lost Fantasy has consistently been one of the most reputable animal welfare organizations in our area. The director is very knowledgeable about pathogens and contagion and maintains a disease-free environment through effective quarantine and vaccine protocols. I can't say the same for many other rescue groups and even sheltering entities in rural Appalachia. I have sent dogs to Lost Fantasy, even puppies. And never once worried about the care they'd receive, or their eventual outcome. I've found the director to be very transparent and forthcoming, and one of the most helpful advocates in our region.

I adopted Lenny from her, and my veterinarian said he was the HEALTHIEST AND MOST CARED-FOR rescue she had ever seen!

I am in awe of the number of animals Lost Fantasy is able to save from shelters in SW Virginia. This is an area where spay/neuter laws are non-existent and shelters in the area have traditionally been very high kill. Thanks to Sarah and her networks, hundreds are saved every year. I am a regular donor and know that every dollar I give goes to saving a life. It is an honor to be able to help her efforts.

I am the Director at Tazewell County Animal Shelter. Our shelter has worked with Lost Fantasy for years before I became involved with the animal shelter and still continue to work with us today. Lost Fantasy is responsible for a countless number of animals leaving our animal shelter. They are professional and always go above and beyond the call of duty to save as many lives as possible. Lost Fantasy Stables and Animal Rescue does not choose to rescue only animals that are perceived as "adoptable" like some organizations but rescue animals that are truly in need and always step up to help when called upon. I honestly don't know what we here in Tazewell County would do without Lost Fantasy Rescue.

Sarah and her volunteers work tirelessly to advocate and help the animals she rescues. They are always holding fundraisers, yard sales, or bake sales to support the many, many animals (usually sick or old that need special veterinary services) that they pull out of several local shelters. Lost Fantasy is my number one charity. I know every dollar donated goes to save dogs and cats. They transport pets that are not getting adopted locally to areas with higher adoption rates after getting them healthy and neutered or spayed and socialized if needed and go the extra mile in other ways to get pets into forever homes so they can save new lives that land at the local area pounds. They even drove a cat to the airport for me to adopt it from another state. An absolutely awesome rescue.
