Causes: Adult Education, Education, Higher Education, Two-Year Colleges
Mission: Leech Lake Tribal College provides quality higher education grounded in Anishinaabe culture.
Results: An exciting project for this year is our Miikinaa ("The Path") project to better serve first-generation college students. The project will provide a 20-student cohort with extra mentoring and challenging academic enrichment activities in an effort to increase academic achievement and student retention. If the project goes as well as we hope, we will make our findings available to other colleges - particularly tribal colleges - for them to replicate. Another great result this year was raising the $25,000 we need to permanently endow the Leann Dick Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will provide scholarships for students studying science at LLTC.
Target demographics: LLTC has an open enrollment policy. Our student body is typically 85%-90% Native American, with the remaining students coming from a variety of backgrounds. We serve both traditional students (straight out of high school) and non-traditional students, including many parents and working adults.
Direct beneficiaries per year: About 250 students, and hundreds more served by our community education and customized training programs.
Programs: LLTC has fully accredited degree programs in: * Indigenous Leadership * Law Enforcement * Liberal Education * Natural Science * Early Childhood Education * Business Management LLTC also offers one-year vocational programs in Carpentry and Electricity, and offers a Child Development Associate certificate program.
