Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Anti-Hate, Civil Rights

Mission:
Our mission is to end harassment in all its forms by transforming the culture that perpetuates hate and harassment.

We carry out this mission by building the power of everyday people to create safe and welcoming environments for all.

We envision a world where all people have the freedom to move through public space, participate in civic life, and reach their full potential.

In this world, people will never face hate or harassment as they walk down the street, go to school or work, sit in the park, attend a public protest, vote, or participate online or in media.

We all have the right to be who we are, wherever we are.

I’ve been supporting Hollaback! for 10 years: first as a donor (I still am), then as a volunteer, and now as a Board member. Hollaback! continues to address harassment everywhere, in places we always experienced (on the street and at work), and now online & at protests. It serves systemically marginalized communities and works with organizations where harassment may be entrenched due to implicit and explicit bias.

When someone harasses someone, that person shows their small mind and how they don't have any intelligence to consider someone else's feelings. They also show the kind of conversation and lifestyle they themselves are used to. Harassers usually sadden me...

Hollaback! is one of the most supportive and helpful organizations our there. From Hollaback! I have learned how to be a better ally and to look out for the well being of others. I have learned practical skills to intervene when I witness others being harassed for just being who they are. With so much hate that spread every day it is a breath of fresh air to see an organization that is thoughtfully engaging everyday problems with simple and usable tools, like the 5D’s of bystander intervention, to tell others that hate and harassment is not okay and that I, along with others, intend to do something about it.

Hollaback!’s training programs are well worth the time and effort to attend, or add to your companies culture. Everyone would benefit from learning these things and deciding to do something about the harassment they witness or experience! It really can make the world a better place!

With years of experience with nonprofit organizations dedicated to advancing and protecting women's/civil/human rights -- as volunteer, donor, senior staffer, CEO, consultant, Board Member -- I can recommend Hollaback! unequivocally as the best governed, best managed, best executor of them all. Hollaback! adheres to its profound values and thoughtful vision, at the same time providing free and customized training to both individuals and corporate entities; anti-harassment educational programing for elementary to college students; and policy advice to government officials. It is both flexible, with capacity to respond virtually instantly to presenting crises, and long-term mission-directed, with forward-looking, specific plans to achieve its ultimate goals. It is also continuingly reflective, assessing its own impacts and progress and making refinements, if necessary, to better address all forms of harassment in an ever-changing world. to Hollaback!

I joined this non-profit because I see this to be a vital piece in our community that could create a sense that all are welcomed. Something that money can't buy, but worthy of gold in the hearts and minds of all those who are marginalized for one thing or another. Patrick Chun

Hollaback! has given me a lot of tools to take my power back in situations that previously made me feel invisible or powerless to affect change in my community.

This organization addresses street harassment. Perpetrators of such harassment seek to disempower their victims. Holla Back provides a safe and supportive forum where the victims can really make a difference, while before Holla Back, they often felt that there was nothing they could do. Holla Back gives hope in a situation where there is no immediate course of action that will correct the injustice: if a victim ignores the harassment she feels powerless, if she confronts the harassment, she risks her safety. Holla Back is an essential part of the contemporary women's rights movement and is gaining momentum every day.

Hollaback addresses gender-based violence in public spaces, in a safe, easy and empowering way. We believe that ending sexual harassment and violence in public spaces will be the defining feminist issue for the current generation of activists, much like addressing workplace sexual harassment was decades ago.

Emily and the Hollaback! founding members are a super inspired and inspiring bunch of smart and fun activists on a mission to change the world, one Hollaback! at a time. And they really do get results! So it was easy to want to get involved and help take this awesome organization to the next level of success. It was collaborative, goal-oriented, and easy to get things agreed and done. Couldn't have asked for a better experience.

When we founded HollabackNYC five years ago, we thought we'd be able to bring raise some consciousness in our city about street harassment. We had no idea the idea would take off the way it did, and now we're pushing forward to take the project to the next level by really giving women and LGBTQ folks powerful tools to respond to harassment, and to give Hollaback! the ability to build effective public policy and advocacy materials. The reorganization of Hollaback brings co-founder Emily May into the position of Executive Director, bringing a smart, savvy, and experienced leader in to focus on street harassment full time. The organization under her leadership has already developed a new website and iPhone app, a corps of volunteers, and an international network of chapters.

Hollaback is a unique and effective movement that is going to end street harassment with the right trust, support, and resources. I'm extremely proud to be a part of such a multi-faceted, comprehensive, and in-your-face approach to asserting women's rights to be on the street. Hollaback is badass- and I wouldn't change a thing.

Hollaback is great! I am so glad to be a part of a movement that helps women feel empowered to fight back against street harassment. With $10,000 we could change the way women are treated on the street.

Street harassment can be distressing and confusing. When I saw all of the stories on Hollaback, I was inspired to change the way that I responded to harassment. When we start telling our stories, we find that there is a lot to tell and a lot to connect with other people about. Hollaback helped me to see how pervasive and real this problem is.

Hollaback has helped me in so many ways and has moved me to give back and help others in turn. Having a support network and the satisfaction of being able to turn to the website and submit a story and make public the details of sometimes traumatic and horrifying events is invaluable to women today. It is a shame the internet wasn't around in 1505 because women of that period would have found Hollaback just as essential.

Hollaback! is an absolutely essential key in the burgeoning movement to end street harassment. Everyone has the right to feel safe and sexy in public, and the daily reality for most women means experiencing harassment, intimidation, and even fear from men on the street. Hollaback! is revolutionizing the way men and women think about street harassment, and empowering individuals to speak out and hollaback! Street harassment is at one end of a spectrum of violence against women, and it should not be tolerated by anyone. Getting involved with Hollaback! is an amazing way to join that fight.

Hollaback! is absolutely amazing. Using technology to combat street harassment is an elegantly simple way to address the most tangible form of discrimination that women in cities face on a daily basis. It is SO empowering to be able to respond to street harassment - something that makes you feel powerless - with a story that gives you a feeling of agency and community. This organization is full of fun, sassy women who commit countless volunteer hours to fostering community on the blog, fund-raising, and finding even more innovative ways to use technology.
