Worksafe Inc Overview
Programs: WORKSAFE currently supports two projects: the Worksafe Activist Network and the Worksafe Law Center, a legal services support project. We provide trainings throughout the state on occupational health and safety using A Guide to Workers' Health & Safety Rights & Filing a Cal/OSHA Complaint. This resource is available in hard copy and on-line (with all live links) at http://www.worksafe.org/topics/wstmra06_tocNEW.cfm . We also provide basic workers' compensation training, training related to handling retaliation or discrimination cases that arise from involvement in occupational safety and health or in a workers' compensation matter or as a result of being injured. We have training programs on toxic exposures in the workplace and home which focus on mold, lead and asbetsos. We train on effective advocacy for community and worker groups. All our training programs are grounded in an advocacy perspective.
WORKSAFE is dedicated to improving working conditions for workers in all industries. Our legal services work focuses on low-wage and immigrant workers, including but not limited to day laborers, domestic workers, agricultural, car wash, garment and taxi workers.
WORKSAFE was born in the early 1980s as an advocacy project to watchdog Cal/OSHA policy. Our first major campaign was in support of Proposition 97 in 1988, which restored the California State occupational safety and health program after it had been jettisoned by then Governor Deukmejian. WORKSAFE was originally a project of BACOSH. Our Board members and volunteer activists reflect our solid roots and diversity. Members were active in BACOSH (Bay Area Committee on Occupational Safety and Health) and SCCOSH (Santa Clara Center on Occupational Safety and Health). Board members are from legal services and worker organizations, and have extensive expertise in occupational safety and health.
WORKSAFE supports a network of health and safety activists. We strive to empower California workers and their representatives to better protect the California workforce. We are a coalition of labor and community groups, individual workers, occupational safety and health [OSH] and other professionals, environmentalists and other interested persons. We welcome members.
The Worksafe Law Center, a project of Worksafe, is a legal services support center. We provide advocacy, technical and legal assistance and training to legal services programs throughout California who directly serve California's most vulnerable low-wage workers.
