Mission: We are a grassroots group, made up of young and old, positive and negative, mixed races and religions, and mixed sexes and sexual orientations. We were founded in the community in 1984, when gay and bisexual men in San Francisco began to meet informally in each other's homes to discuss their fears and concerns about the AIDS epidemic. These first workshops were the genesis of our current programs in which we provide comfortable, safe spaces for gay and bisexual men to come together and speak openly about safe sex and AIDS.
Programs: Our existing programs include street outreach, workshops and community forums, neighborhood organizing, condom distribution, and media campaigns. In the past year, we reached 7,110 individuals through one-on-one street interventions, 1,300 through workshops, and over 450 through community forums. We distributed over 1 million condoms through 85 venues around the city. And our media campaigns reached thousands through local newspapers, magazines, and electronic media, including our web sites. Our community organizing HIV prevention programs are nationally respected and have been replicated in many cities throughout the country.
