Nonprofit Issues:

Homeless & Housing, Economic Development

Address:

1707 South 7th Street #10 San Jose CA 95112 USA

Mission:

Rebuilding Together brings together communities and volunteers to rehabilitate the homes of low-income homeowners, particularly the elderly and disabled, so that they may live in warmth, safety, and independence. We also repair non profit facilities so that they are better able to serve our community, by directing their resources to programs and services, rather than facility maintenance.

Programs:

An army of volunteers comes together each October and April to rebuild homes and communities through Rebuilding Day Projects. Throughout the year, our Neighbor To Neighbor program provides volunteer teams to perform repairs that improve accessiblity and mobility within the home. These repairs and safety modifications, which bring new life and hope to those in need include wheelchair ramps, grab bars, interior and exterior painting, yard clean-up, plumbing and heating repairs, replacement of locks and installation of smoke alarms. All services are provided free of charge to the homeowner or community facility Our clients have neither the physical or financial means to repair their homes for themselves - the majority are older adults and many are disabled. Homeowners apply to Rebuilding Together for services by completing an application, which requires them to provide proof of homeownership and financial information to help determine their income level. This complete process ensures that help is provided to homeowners with the greatest need in the community. Our program is a wonderful experience for both homeowners and volunteers. Homeowners are amazed and grateful for the work that the volunteers provide. It's an unforgettable experience for volunteers who are able make a meaningful impact in a community members life. The program is able to improve homeowners lives in lasting and concrete ways. The average age of the homeowners served is 72 years old. A total of 76% of the households in which we work have a disabled resident. The average number of years that homeowners have resided in their homes is 34. The average homeowner annual income is $17,200.

Great time, great people, and always a great learning experience! We volunteered for the first time, and we will do this again.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

More people on site to ask questions to, the project manager was busy most of the time answering and helping others in the group.

Worked with RTSV for 20 years. They help people who may not be able to help themselves as much as they have in the past. They take a dollar of donations and stretch it into $50 by using volunteer labor and donated goods from ordinary citizens and companies like Home Depot, Lowes and Orchard Hardware. They help people who are actual home owners that can not afford to maintain their homes, some living with no heat or hot water and/or unsafe conditions. RTSV helps them get back to a safe, warm and comfortable environment. These volunteers come from all backgrounds and strata of life but with one common purpose to help a struggling homeowner. It is amazing to see what 20 volunteers, some tools, supplies and a little work can do to help these people get to a better place. Never been so proud of a group of people in my life!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would figure a way to get them even more money and exposure to help even more people.

This group provides the opportunity to spend a Saturday helping people who really need it and really appreciate it to have a safer and easier time in their home environment. Meeting the people who you are helping is especially gratifying and I highly recommend the experience. I have been to every Rebuilding Day since my first and hooe to continue that going forward.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Not really anything to change - they do a great job with the mibey they gave and gave a great process. Maybe they could expand to more Rebuilding Days if possible since there are mire they could help.

I have been volunteering as a photographer for Rebuilding Together, formerly Christmas In April, for 10 years. I truly believe its cause. On Rebuilding Days I see so much joy and gratitude on home owners' faces. Wonderful volunteers transform living spaces from undesirable to 'Wow!" You can see the photos right on the websites of RT's local chapters. If you have not volunteered for or donated to this great organization, I strongly encourage you to start.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

More Rebuilding Days :)

Rebuilding Together SV not only provides needed services for the community but builds a "family" atmosphere with the staff and volunteers. I work as a volunteer for two other NGOs, and RBT-SV ranks number one. If you read the letters of appreciation posted at the office, the comments from the homeowners tells it all. Seeing the happy homeowners and getting to know them is priceless.

Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley helped me put the pieces of my life back together. I was fortunate enough to be chosen by them in conjunction with a program of The City of Campbell, to become a recipient of their assistance. They arranged for trees to be cut off of my roof so that I could receive a new roof and also remove and relocate the huge bee-colony which had been embedded in my roof rafters for years. Rebuilding Together provided me with a huge dumpster so that I could clean and remove debris from my yard and provided me with a fantastic company to paint the exterior of my house, which hadn't been done in decades! Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley assisted me every step of the way while I was having work done on my house and provided me with a real sense of security because I knew that I could call on them personally to help me with any questions I had and to make arrangements for work to be done. Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley always sent professional and competent workers who respected my property and me and it was a pleasure to work with them! I needed to have major work done on my property for health and safety reasons and I can't believe how lucky I was to receive the wonderful benefits of Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley. I will forever be thankful for that!

After retirement I felt I needed a work-like structure and schedule to
keep me active and to give back to my community. I do volunteer work
with 3 local non-profits as well as donate to my favorite charities. That
said my weekly gig with Rebuilding Together is by far the most fulfilling
volunteer work I do. I not only feel good about the work we do helping
senior and disabled homeowners live safer and more comfortable lives,
I am learning best construction practices at the same time...a win-win
combination that's hard to beat. Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley is the
best, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who wants to help others
while learning valuable home repair skills at the same time.

Rebuilding Together does a great service to the Silicon Valley. Each week a group of male and female workers gather at a house that needs repairs to enable the homeowner to live safer, more comfortable, and be less reliant on needing other people to help her move about. We do everything from putting in CFL lightbulbs and insulating the hot water pipes to installing grab bars and in some cases ramps. The most memorable project I worked on was installing a ramp for a lady so she could use her wheelchair to get into her yard. She said she had not been out of her house for two years, and her enjoyment in now being to move about was overwhelming.
