Mission: The Progressive has campaigned tirelessly to end the economic sanctions on Iraq, to adopt a saner policy toward drugs, and to institute public financing of political campaigns. Now, it is one of the few independent magazines in the country writing critically about Bush?s plans for war against Iraq, the Bush Administration's attacks on civil liberties, and the widespread racism and hate crimes against Muslims, Arab-Americans, and people of color in general, in light of the new "war on terrorism."The Progressive Media Project bolsters the work of grassroots activists and nonprofit groups by giving them the tools to better communicate their views to their fellow citizens. We help provide this access to an open forum of debate: the op-ed, or commentary, page of our nation's newspapers. We solicit and distribute commentaries from activists, scholars, journalists, and staff of nonprofit organizations who have expertise in a certain area but may not know how to communicate their views succinctly or distribute them widely. We help them get over both of these hurdles and thus help democratize the range of opinions offered to American citizens through the media. In addition to distributing commentaries to newspapers across the country, the Progressive Media Project offers valuable media skills training to NGOs, nonprofit organizations and minority writers and advocates. These op-ed writing clinics bolster the work of grassroots activists and give them the opportunity to communicate their views to a larger audience.

I have been a fan since 1996 when, as a journalist,I participated in one of IJNR's learning expeditions. I was impresssed by the quality of the program and the sensible and even-handed approach to learning about and reporting on complex environmental issues. Since then, Ive partcipated in part or all of several other expeditions and always found them impressive. I'm a founding board member, having served now for 15 years and suffer through the ever-present fund-raising struggle and only wish I culd be more effective at fund-raising so that more journalists could share the IJNR experience.
