Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Health, Health Care, International, International Development, Philanthropy, Public & Societal Benefit

Mission: Founded in 1968, the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) public charity that works with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and other strategic partners in the Americas to mobilize resources and jointly address key health, education, and training priorities. With a deep knowledge of major health concerns and strong relationships with key stakeholders in the region, PAHEF builds successful partnerships and projects that advance health in the Americas.

Results: PAHEF is involved in a variety of projects that improve the health and lives of people throughout the Americas. For instance, through the generosity of Merck & Co., Inc., PAHEF has partnered in the donation of Mectizan tablets since 1989—enough for nearly eight million treatments. With Sanofi Pasteur’s support, a three-year grant from PAHEF for more than $1.2 million will be used by PAHO to reinforce regional knowledge—based on laboratory evidence—of meningococcal disease over three years in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Geographic areas served: Western Hemisphere

Programs: To achieve the goals of our targeted efforts, the Pan American Health and Education Foundation manages activities in three areas: 1. Support of health projects and programs that lead to a positive impact on major health challenges facing the Americas 2. Recognition of leaders in inter-American health 3. Education by providing affordable textbooks and instruments to students PAHEF provides grants and donations of medicines to countries of the Americas for a broad range of health areas such as prevention of obesity, child nutrition, healthy aging, indigenous health, infection control, drug safety, parasitic diseases, vaccines, laboratory practices, and health worker training. These grants are helping build important ground-work and initiatives in our areas of strategic focus. The PAHEF Grants Program is divided into two broad areas: 1. Donor-Funded Grants: PAHEF supports various health projects of PAHO and other organizations 2. PAHEF-Funded Grants: With its own resources, PAHEF supports initiatives within the Foundation's priority areas and PAHO priority programmatic objectives For 40 years, PALTEX (The Expanded Textbook and Instructional Materials Program), a joint technical cooperation program with the Pan American Health Organization, has provided more than six million affordable books and instruments to students and health professionals -- physicians, nurses, dentists, nutritionists, veterinary doctors -- at 555 institutions in 20 Latin American and Caribbean countries. The instructional textbooks include books in English translated into Spanish and self-published books. The self-published textbooks are also available to Spanish-speaking professionals and students outside of Latin America. The Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health program is a partnership between Pan American Health Organization and the Foundation. It recognizes excellence in inter-American health, community service, health literature, veterinary public health, and bioethics. These prestigious awards honor dedicated professionals who led the way in advancing health conditions in the Americas during the last century, and stimulate the growth of the next generation of leaders working to improve health in the Americas. The Global Violence Prevention Project is building a broad coalition of individuals from organizations that endorse and fund work in global violence prevention. In addition, it examines the successes and methods of comparable movements for other public health coalitions to help build and strengthen the project's coalition. The project creates advocacy materials and works with political leaders and leaders in the media to highlight violence issues.

I have worked with PAHO Foundation and even interned for them, and all of my experiences have been nothing short from fantastic! The staff and leadership are passionate and committed to advancing public health in the Americas and work tirelessly to achieve that mission.

They are small but growing quickly! The organization has recently relocated to Atlanta, GA to better position itself within the LAC and global health community, which I think is a great idea with the many public health entities in the area. It is astounding how much work they have accomplished over the years (i.e. strengthening health systems, promoting women's health, and combating neglected tropical diseases like Zika), so I definitely think they are worth checking out!

Oh my goodness! The foundation has yet another brand and website with an almost complete turn-over of staff yet again and again and again. The people of Latin America and the Caribbean deserve better.

I am a donor and staff member here at the Foundation. These past few years have been a transition for the organization but the Foundation has received clean audits throughout the years, new leadership in our president and board chair and members, and are poised to help public health in the Americas and our preferred partner, the Pan American Health Organization. They are an incredible group of public health heroes committed to sustainable public health solutions.

For years this nonprofit has been trying to determine what its mission and focus are but never really gets there. It has rebranded itself at least four times since the early 2000s. Especially when it lost PALTEX, it provides essentially no value to PAHO. PAHO has its own staff to promote it and reach out to corporations for partnerships.
