HEADINGTON INSTITUTE Overview
Humanitarian relief and development staff around the world are facing increasing challenges to their physical security and psychological well-being. Staff are confronted with significant stressors, from natural disaster recovery, to civil war, to constant overwhelming need in the face of insufficient resources. Experiencing trauma, both directly and vicariously, is an occupational hazard. Aid workers exposed to such things are at increased risk for psychological distress and/or impaired functioning. Ongoing psychological and spiritual support helps to reduce distress and increases the long-term effectiveness of staff and the organizations for which they work.
