Mission: Guilderhaven, inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-for-profit that provides low-cost spay/neuter, food, and medical intervention for the companion animals of New York residents and for wildlife.  We also assist rescue organizations in this endeavor, with an emphasis on our local community
Results: In 2013, we facilitated the spay/neuter of 806 cats and 175 dogs with the help of grants from the William Gundry Broughton Charitable Private Foundation, Inc., the Doris Day Animal Foundation, Hedley & Co., CPA, the Golub Foundation, the Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation, and the generosity of our local supporters! We continue to produce an educational coloring booklet and speak to school groups and youth organizations. In 2013, Joyce Perry and Jean Simmons, our new Board Members and resident wildlife rehabilitators, gave thirteen presentations on their work in wildlife with an emphasis on raptors. In addition, Guilderhaven, inc. helps place animals from private homes and from shelters and rescue groups. We have also delivered dog/cat food, and many supplies, to pet owners and rescue groups. We are so grateful for the support and continue to strive to educate the public on the importance of humane pet guardianship. By working very closely with Guilderhaven over the last ten years I am able to work with the very poor inner-city residents to help spay/neuter dogs and cats for pet owners who have limited or no income and just can't afford the spay/neuter cost for their pets. Most of these owners have pets because they opened their door to a starving and/or pregnant cat on the porch or took a dog from a home where it was was being neglected (beaten, caged, and/or fed very little).

Guilderhaven totally understands the need to help these pets and 100% supports spay/neuter as the solution to reduce the number of homeless pets in our inner-city community. They field every phone call for help that comes in and work very hard to find a solution to whatever animal situation that comes along. Besides this huge undertaking Guilderhaven also reaches deep in their hearts to find energy for continual fund-raising.

Thank you Guilderhaven for all you do!!

Guilderhaven encouraged us to start our own not-for-profit animal welfare organization. They provided us with aid for spay/neuter and medical services which helped us to be up-and-running. We are now an incorporated 501(c)(3) organization, the Community Animal Action Project, a community outreach organization for animals.

Guilderhaven continues to be a mentor and source of inspiration not only for our organization, but so many others. Guilderhaven exemplifies the power of organizations and individuals working together to improve the lives of animals where we live.

I have been proud to be a support veterinarian and the head wildlife veterinarian for Guilderhaven for the past 4 years. This organization does an enormous amount of good for the animals, pets and wildlife of New York's Capital Region. I cannot say enough good things about the volunteers and the work that they do.

Guilderhaven helps to support Whispering Willow Wildcare. This organization rehabilitates wild animals for release and provides a home for raptors that are not able to be released back into the wild. The unreleasable raptors then become wildlife ambassadors at many events. I work at a venue that has had the pleasure of hosting these wildlife ambassadors. The children love to see the live wild animals and these interactions help to foster a love and respect for wild animals and nature on the whole.

We have an office building that has mirrored windows. One day last month a hummingbird ran into the window. We ran out to get it but it wouldn't fly away although it would lap up suger water from our fingers. We left it in a tree but it would not fly away. We were heartbroken. We called Guilderhaven and they called a local vet who rehabilitates birds. We took the little thing to the vet and she will do everything possible to save it. At least we had the satisfaction of knowing we did everything we could. Guilderhaven has many partners and wildlife rehabilitatiors are some of them. It doesn't matter who you are, they seem to always come to the rescue of any kind of animal. Awesome organization!

I volunteer with a few local shelters and organizations and everyone at Guilderhaven has been very happy to help me in my efforts, whether it be getting a dog in the paper, on their website, or just helping get the animal a forever home. They are a very genuine and caring group and their efforts are well respected and appreciated by myself. I am sure that others would feel the same way. This group is willing to go the extra mile to help any animal that could benefit from it.

I was a Board Member of Guilderhaven, inc. since our incorporation as a 501(c)(3) in 2002. I have since stepped down from the board but have been volunteering my services in maintaining our website (http:///www.guilderhaven.org) and our Facebook page. In addition, I helped secure grants for our low cost spay/neuter efforts. Over the past three years we have secured grants from a variety of foundations and organizations such as the Doris Day Animal Foundation, the Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation, the Golub Foundation, the Wright Family Foundation, and the William Gundry Broughton Charitable Private Foundation. I am proud to work with Guilderhaven, inc. in their low cost spay/neuter efforts as well as in educating the public about responsible pet guardianship. I am also excited that we have two new board members that are wildlife rehabilitators that extend our mission to include wildlife and wildlife education.

I am proud to be a board member of Guilderhaven,Inc.
People who love their pets and find themselves with emergency situations that they are unable to handle emotionally or financially turn to our organization for help. We are fortunate to be able to help so many companion animals and their owners who turn to us on a daily basis. We not only help fund low cost spay and neuter clinics but we also educate the public on how important it is to spay & neuter your pets.
I am also a wildlife rehabilitator and Guilderhaven pays all my costs and has helped me build aviaries for my birds of prey. Under Guilderhaven, I offer live bird of prey programs to teach children and adults about habitat loss and the impact on our ecosystem.

In the fall of 2013 I received a call from one of my best friends who was in a desperate situation. Having lost her job and struggling to find new work, her unemployment benefits ran out and most days she was going hungry herself so that her cats could eat. Friends chipped in to help out where we could but we couldn't help for much longer and she was out of cat food and needed help. I called local Veterinary offices and asked if there was any program known that would help people who had fallen on hard times in an emergency. I was told to call Guilderhaven. I didn't know what this organization did but I called and explained the situation. Sue Green arranged to meet me that day to drop off some emergency cat food supplies. I expected maybe a small bag of cat food and walked down the street to meet her. She opened her car and gave me two huge bags of cat food, and then a ride back up to my house with them! She also said to have my friend call when the supplies got low and they would be able to help again! I couldn't believe it and my friend, and her cats were extremely grateful. I began attending fundraisers and met several members of Guilderhaven whose work and stories are an amazing inspiration of what people can do to help animals. My friend has since gotten a job and is back on her feet but I have not forgotten the miracle this group performed in coming to the rescue. I want everyone to know about and support this organization. We may think we will never need the help that this group provides, but they offer so much for the animals and their people, and in today's hard economic climate NO ONE is immune from needing some kind of help at some point.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

No changes- I just wish everyone knew about this program and supported the program while times are good so that when times are bad there are enough resources to go around!
