Issues: Children & Youth, Education, Job Training

Location: 3543 - 18th St Suite 675 San Francisco CA 94110 USA

Mission: GirlSource provides meaningful work and leadership opportunities for urban, low-income young women, ages 14 - 18. We hire them to create media and education products that express their own voices and experiences. GirlSource equips young women with the life, leadership, and job skills they need to succeed.
Programs: GirlSource programs include the Young Women's Technology and Leadership program which hires young women to build an interactive web site. Their job during the program is to provide information and discussion on the issues from our book, It's About Time, published in 1999. Program participants gain technology and leadership skills that will prepare them for internships, jobs, or additional training. The Young Women's Community Leadership Program delivers a curriculum that emphasizes leadership and activism around self-identified health and well being issues within participants' own communities. GirlSource has partnered with community based organizations across 5 Bay Area counties to reach over 150 young women per year. Bound For Success provides career, college, and life planning services for low-income young women. Bound for Success has four components: workshops to help young women get to college and expose them to a broad range of career options, visits to local colleges and universities, enrollment in an Individual Development Account (IDA) program (which allows youth to save earnings that are matched at a 3:1 rate for educational expenses), and the Glady Thacher Scholarship Fund, which provides a cash award to GirlSource participants entering college. In addition to these three programs, GirlSource also actively includes low-income young women in leadership and decision-making positions on both our staff and Board, and program participants are routinely promoted to staff positions within the organization. Consequently, GirlSource provides an environment in which young women work with women of all ages on our staff and Board to shape and run our programs.

My experience was great! I had much fun. Most people go to work ,and don't have that much fun. Either they're stressed out from their problems at home, can't pay their bills, rent, or having some relationship issues. But here at GirlSource, you are not going to have that type of vibe. There's a lot of fun, you have no choice but to be in a good mood. I mean look at the bright side, you can do things that you probably haven't done before. Like me,I haven't done things such as make documentaries, a collage, or learning how to handle different things in a better way...What i am saying is that if you are interested, then that's a good because i's the $900 you are going to get...I no rite $900 hahaha lol...

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

very sweat, kind and helpful

My experience at GirlSource has been great. i have learned a lot from everyone. Through the video poems we made I learned a lot from everyone's experiences. The group discussion helped a lot to be more open and get to know people's different point of views. Discussions from workshops like about the issues young women go through in our community.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Getting to know about my community and the issues other girls go through. Being able to have a safe space to talk with other girls and getting feedback in return. Having an opportunity to work with technology and learn new things with it.

I really liked this program because i feel like it prepared me for any future jobs better. I enjoyed working in a big group. I would of liked it better if there was boys in the group, get an idea of how they feel about the issues that are affecting young women.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my life.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

make it bigger.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

that i got to meet new people & a new good experience.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

nice & polite. All of them were helpful & always positive.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

spread all around the country helping young women become more confident.

Ways to make it better...

there would of have been longer & more girls.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

nothing. probably just the fact that is in short sessions.

One thing I'd also say is that...

i love this program & i enjoyed being around positive people.

In this program, I learned more than technology. Ive learned how to be a leader and be more open to others. The program is over tomorrow, but I've already learned how to share my skills with others. After GirlSource taught me how to use different applications on the MAC computer, I went back to my other program, I Have a Dream and helped them fix the computers and also taught my fellow peers about iMovie, Photoshop, Powerpoint and more. I learned how to speak up and not to be shy in front of others. I start to talk and participate more in different conversations. Ive met people that I will definitly keep in contact wit in the future. They are life time friends, and im not just saying that. I shared secrets that I would never ever in my life tell ne one. I knew I grew out of my shell. I know that I will be telling everyone to apply to this program. Especially a chick coming out of the ghetto, this experience has open many doors for me. The last thing I want people to know is that, the staff arent like teachers.. They are more like adult friends. They understand everything you say. The one on one talk that we had with AnaEyvette, made a difference. She was willing to help me even after i graduate from this program. With both getting a job and my academics.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Are the best ! Man you wont even know that they are adults ! They know everything you been through. And listen to what you have to say.
