FOURTH ARTS BLOCK INC

Rating: 4.83 stars   12 reviews

Issues: Arts & Culture

Location: 61 East 4th Street New York NY 10003 USA

Mission: Fourth Arts Block (FAB) was founded in 2001 by a coalition of performing arts groups to preserve and advance the East 4th Street Cultural District as a center for diverse, experimental art for our community. Today, FAB serves as an advocate for the cultural district and our members, overseeing the renovation of more than 100,000 square feet of arts space, marketing the neighborhood as a cultural destination, supporting artist’ growth and capacity, and developing a new model of collaborative artistic leadership.
Results: FAB is successfully promoting the district as a cultural destination. FAB festivals, free outdoor performances, maps, and a ticketing program have helped increase visibility and generate enthusiasm for the district's arts groups. E-marketing and discount ticketing through our centralized website and storefront visitors' center are helping increase revenue. Unified performance festivals and promotions, such as the FAB! Festival and Pride Goes East, provide valuable opportunities for arts groups to showcase their work and cultivate new audiences. FAB's façade and streetscape improvement program, public art programs, performance parties, open houses and tours, also heighten the visibility of performing arts groups. In December 2010, FAB opened the FAB Cafe & East Village Visitors Center to connect residents and visitors to deeper cultural experiences in our community.
Target demographics: FAB and its members are known for their outstanding records of outreach, racial and ethnic diversity, artistic ingenuity, free and low cost programs, and training for emerging artists and youth. Each year these cultural organizations serve more than 1,500 artists and attract an audience of over 250,000 people.
Direct beneficiaries per year: By providing direct services and support FAB is helping reduce costs for artists and audiences and increasing opportunities for resource sharing. FAB's collaborative initiatives benefit its members and dozens of resident companies and artists participating in their programs, non-member arts groups whose primary location is the East Village/Lower East Side, audiences from the neighborhood and throughout the tri-state area, as well as tourists drawn to the history and vitality of the East 4th Street Cultural District.
Geographic areas served: East Village & LES (NYC)
Programs: - District Development & Leadership: the conversion of 100,000 square feet into active arts space, streetscape improvements, cultural heritage, greening, and public art on scaffolding and other public sites. - Artist Services: ongoing resources and targeted consulting to support the capacity and growth of arts organizations in the East Village & Lower East Side - FAB Lab: innovative solutions to longstanding challenges, from ticketing and booking to energy efficiency and community development. - Community Partnerships & Festivals: FAB! Festival & Block Party celebrates the diversity of artists in our community, Pride Goes East unifies neighborhood LGBTQ culture, Downtown Art’s NYC Street Festival of Young Artists & Leaders showcases youth programs, East Village Eats connects theater and dining. - Visitors Services & Marketing: promotion of East Village/LES as a cultural destination through website, media, rush ticketing and operation of the East Village Visitors Center - now located in the FAB Café

FAB is one of the best art related organizations I have ever had the pleasure of working with. As a musician I have had several occasions to perform at their events over the past several years and will continue to do so whenever they ask. I am not one who normally volunteers my time but for the Fourth Arts Block I will always find the time, that is how amazing they are

Fourth Arts Block is an inspiring example of how concerted community effort can help to support a thriving local cultural economy and a vibrant neighborhood. FAB’s promotional work on East 4th Street attracts curious audiences of thousands and it’s work to provide affordable space to artists also incubates cutting-edge performances and productions by local artists. In this way, FAB not only supports the development of the area as a unique cultural district, but also ensures the long-term development of a sustainable and vibrant neighborhood for those who live and work in the East Village.
FAB’s work demonstrates how small arts spaces and organizations can inspire cultural vitality and sustainable neighborhood development from the ground-up.

FAB is in the truest sense of the word just FABulous! The staff is so friendly and they really care about "their" theaters and artists, I don't even know how much overtime the FAB ladies spent in the office since I first met them. The whole block feels like home for me and I think it's no exaggeration to say that East 4th Street is like a big, loud, caring family! Keep rockin' FAB! :)

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Yes and it's awesome to see them!!!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

...make none!

FAB is such a wonderful organization that brings so many artists together and supports their work. I have been lucky enough to work with FAB on and off for a few years and their events are always tons of fun and affordable! As an artist, I have made so many valuable connections though FAB. The staff, Tamara, Lauren, and Laurel, is so passionate and knowledgeable about the work. The best part is that FAB is so generous with their time and expertise that you know they are doing everything they can to foster artistic development. I am grateful that I can say I am affiliated with FAB.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my professional life.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the people that I have met and the exposure to various cultural events.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

professional, knowledgeable, patient, and kind.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

take over the world! ... bring together artists from all over and create really interesting multi-cultural, interdisciplinary collaborations. ... create a space on E 4th St for ALL artists around NYC to congregate & be inspired... like in the 60s!

I was introduced to FAB through the executive directer Tamara Greenfield and since have not only participated in helping them with events but also have benefited from all there wonderful shows and events. I think is it extremely important to support organizations such as FAB and keep them up and running, so that the community can be exposed to a variety of AFFORDABLE cultural events. I mean how many places can you go to daily and find more then 10 options of cultural activities that predominantly cost under $15 and know you are helping to support independent artists.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

just being a new yorker and taking advantage of seeing their affordable shows and attending their events

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

is the vast variety of what they have to offer in the arts

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

In the few times I have helped them as a volunteer I was so impressed with all the other volunteers and how passionate they were about what they weer doing

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Promote their cause of helping to spread the arts to people who may not typically be exposed to it in an accessible and affordable way, which I imagine takes a larger staff and $ for marketing.

Fourth Arts Block is the small, but mighty organization that is constantly working on ideas to help the arts in Downtown NYC. FAB is a group of hard-working, intelligent and giving people who are truly interested in promoting creative work and giving artists a podium to speak freely. While interning there, I was able to learn a lot about the countless tasks the administrative aspect of the arts requires of someone and I feel that I went from knowing almost nothing to being able to work well within the non-profit and arts administration work setting. The information I have gained from FAB has increased my interest in giving others opportunities as well as information to inform my own creative possibilities.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

meeting so many creative people and seeing all the different ways to approach art making/promotion...and then serving those needs/desires.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Smart, kind, informative, willing

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Create workshops for any artist learn about all the aspects of administration. Hire more staff. Expand outreach and develop other cultural districts to hook into throughout the city. Create more partnerships between the arts and the neighborhood.

I have had the opportunity to volunteer with FAB on 2 separate occasions. Last summer I was at one of their street festivals. They provide a family friendly day of fun while showcasing local artists. In December, I helped out at FAB's Holiday Happening, another opportunity for local artists and to familiarize the community with their work. I also recently attended an art installation/performance that FAB sponsored with some of their affiliates.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

how enthusiastic the staff is when running their events.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

very passionate about the work they are doing for the artists and the community.

I am an award winning performing artist and my band Giftshop has participated in Fourth Art Block events that are unique and community related. Being a native of New York City, and lifelong Lower Manhattan resident in particular, I can confirm that FAB is an essential part of the community. Besides providing my group with our first outdoor festival performance (an opportunity that would have never have happened without Fourth Arts Block). I've seen this wonderful institution provide family friendly days devoted to kids, panel discussions on woman artists, a celebration of gay awareness, and even an impromptu street dancing class. In the rampant "Suburb-i-fication" of the five boroughs let me be loud and clear...FAB is an OASIS OF THE ARTS! They are an outstanding non-profit representing diversity, creativity, integrity, and sensitivity. Fourth Arts Block is not only a reminder of the high esteem the arts used to be held in this city-which is a global mecca-but FAB represents they way it has to be for the sake of our future. Most Sincerely, Damian Eckstein

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Festivals for the community.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have them do more events/classes/outreach-but that is tied to financial matters.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The passion for the arts and the sense of community.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Professional and a willingness to put in extra effort.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Provide a real arts colony for the neighborhood and beyond. Let me say this. The arts provide jobs for the economy. The arts keeps youth in schools. The arts keeps people out of prison. FAB can and will make a REAL difference.

Ways to make it better...

It was wonderful. No problems.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Always money. And lets not belittle it by calling it "bucks". We are talking REAL dollars here.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I've helped out on a few occasions manning the check-in booth for both artists (at the festival) and audience (at their parties). They're always sure to keep the volunteers happy and I'm glad to help out!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

they really engage with the E 4th Street community and they're making a difference in the appearance and management of the street already!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

enthusiastic, knowledgeable about the needs of the community, and ready to serve.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

create a real hub for culture in the East Village.

FAB is embedded in a beautiful but not widely known neighborhood of east 4th street. While walking there one day I was entranced by FAB's cool graphics and friendly staff members. After seeing how dedicated each one of them was to helping struggling theaters get an audience, I offered my services to them. Inspired by their efforts I created an original oil painting for a promotion of an exciting show happening in one of the theaters. I am excited to work with FAB again and I envision great things for these fine ladies in the future, which will be good news for the theaters they help everyday. Go FAB!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

creating illustrations and graphics for promotional material.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

build them a bigger office. Actually its more like a closet.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the cause. FAB cares about the arts, and that struck a chord with me.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

quirky and friendly. They were also extremely dedicated and everyone there works like a dog!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Bring the amazing cultural goldmine that is east 4th street to the public. They would also be able to hire more staff or get a bigger office.

Ways to make it better...

if I was paid.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Money issues. they work hard. but it is difficult for them to get the word out with little funding.

One thing I'd also say is that...

art is something of a black sheep in the US. Artists aren't really appreciated enough and too often people see the arts as something secondary or for the privileged. Fab promotes cheap events. It's something the average person can afford.
