Reviews for Discovery Time School

Rating: 5 stars

Sadly, "Bedford Mom" is misinformed. A "Charter School" is a taxpayer supported Public School. Discovery Time School has ever and always will be a non-profit private academic school. The Board's mission is to run a fiscally responsible, high quality institution that is committed to expanding its programs so that students of all ages have the opportunity to have an education where deep learning and joyful community are central to the school. It is unfortunate that many fear change and view it as a "tarnishing" of the past. We disagree. The change that is happening is proof of the solid foundation and methodology that the school was built on. It is run by volunteers who donate all of their time and talents to this goal. But, you don't have to believe me. Come and visit. Talk to our "little primary school students," and see if they think ours is a wasted effort. For all the energy some people put toward maligning honest and noble intentions, they would do better service to help out our hardworking staff and wonderful volunteers. Our most expensive programs (which would enable any child to attend from 6:30am-5:30pm Monday through Friday) cost $2.75 per hour. You can't even get a high school babysitter for that price. We are working on secure funding strategies to make it possible for any child to be able to attend regardless of their families income. Of course, these things take time--especially in a recession. But, we have faith in our mission. Reviews like "Bedford Mom's" are just going to be a part of our history. We welcome visitors any time. I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

My Discovery Time journey began in 1997. My daughter attended kindergarten here. We lived in Hopewell, and had to drive 45 minutes one way to bring her. Back then, DT only had half day Kindergarten, but it was absolutely worth it. After she graduated, she was ready for 3rd grade. Since DT didn't go beyond Kindergarten at the time, I ended up homeschooling her for most of her academic career. In 2009, I became DT's president, & I promised to give all kids a chance to have that excellent education.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have more help spreading the truth about what and who we are so that the community would realize that we are growing. What our critic also left out is that we also added a top notch toddler program as well. We are growing in both directions--serving our youngest students and our older elementary students.

The teachers and helpers at this school are wonderful. Unfortunately, the reputation that was built by many years of wonderful service as a top-notch preschool and kindergarten to our community is being tarnished by the desire by some members of this organization to become strictly a "charter school". They have recently decided (early 2011) to either not offer child care on non-school days or to offer limited hours. For working families, this is just not realistic. Even in the 3 yr old preschool program, your child is expected to only require care from 8:00-3:00 - "wrap-around" care is an additional fee on top of the monthly fee you already pay (which does not include any non-school days - if they offer childcare on those days, it costs an additional $22).

I have seen children graduate from this preschool program for over 10 years - these children were always some of the brightest children in their later classes - which is why it is so disappointing to see what is now happening to what was a wonderful organization.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

There are a very limited number of families in our area who can afford to not only have a parent stay at home full-time with their children, but also be able to afford the price of sending a child to Discovery Time. The board of directors of this school are going to have to decide whether the handful of children they have attending thier primary classes are enough to support their school, or if they plan to continue the hugely popular preschool/pre-k programs.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Our staff are committed to continuing their education and training in the field of early childhood education. Staff are professional and most importantly kind and respectful of the children. We enjoy learning every day from our students.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

develop into a cutting-edge K-12 private institution that serves as a model in educating students in our community.

Ways to make it better...

We are always looking at ways to improve our academic and daycare programs. We will expand our daycare program in March to include young toddlers aged 18 - 36 months. This program will be lead by a teacher certified in early childhood education.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

providing an affordable private education for the children in our community.

One thing I'd also say is that...
