Location: 3400 14th Street, NW Washington DC 20010 USA

Mission: The Dance Institute of Washington is committed to providing children and youth the opportunity to develop socially, emotionally, intellectually and artistically through the discipline of dance. To deliver on that commitment, DIW operates a studio school and free education outreach programs at local schools, affordable housing communities and youth organizations. Each of these programs uses dance education and performance to grant young people from diverse backgrounds a chance to experience the performing arts and to develop important skills needed for a successful future—in dance and beyond. DIW is dedicated to: 1) building self-esteem, discipline and the drive for excellence among at-risk youth; 2) involving parents, educators, professional artists and community members in the lives of DC's underserved children; 3) fostering mentoring relationships between professional artists and students; 4) broadening the horizons for the next generation of successful citizens.
Results: DIW provides high quality arts training at affordable prices; DIW provides youth development and childcare services for neighborhood residents and workers; DIW promotes foot traffic to local businesses; DIW promotes Columbia Heights as a cultural destination.
Target demographics: DIW students are primarily from the District of Columbia, with some participants traveling from surrounding areas in Maryland and Virginia. The majority of DIW students are African American. Having its studios located in the diverse neighborhood of Columbia Heights, DIW continues to attract youth from all backgrounds, including Latin, Asian and Caucasian students. The majority of students receive partial scholarships. In its outreach, DIW forges partnerships with local schools and community-based organizations.
Direct beneficiaries per year: 65 percent of students receive scholarships to attend DIW
Programs: Pre Dance Program, Pre Professional Program, Community Program, Summer Intensive, Adult Programs

This is my grandaughter's (age 4) first experience with dance and she loves it. She looks forward to her class each week. I plan to enroll her in future classes.

I worked with DIW from time to time and saw several great things and still do on the occassion that I visit DC. The staff really seems to care about their work and believe in the programs they offer. Many of the students seem motivated to dance professionally and/or go to college and study further.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

dance training and discipline. DIW helped me build a solid foundation and appreciation for expressing myself.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

do more in the community. Tbere are lots of kids in DC who need what DIW is. They can only know about it if DIW gets back out there and what they are about.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

what I learned as a student of dance and how it prepared me for the professional dance world and in college. The training was excellent.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

generally nice.

they were better organized. Maybe things have changed since I was a student, but that's what I remember most.

money and enough staff.

I was a student of dance as a teenager. Now, as an adult studying, I have really enjoyed the offerings of DIW. The staff really seems to care and be interested in our continued development, even though I am purely dancing for my own enjoyment. They motivate me to work harder and I'm glad that they are here in the community.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

improving my technique and confidence as a dancer who hasn't danced in many years.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

do more in the community. I live in the neighborhood and I don't hear much about DIW. Such a great place needs to be known!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the training and the amazing facility! There aren't many beautiful and open dance spaces like it in DC! Just for these two things, I tell my friends to visit.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

mostly friendly and engaging.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

improve the lives of so many children through the art of dance! If they had more money, I imagine they would have more programs and offer more outreach to more children.

Ways to make it better...

they were better organized. Sometimes I get the feeling that they aren't always on top of their game. It doesn't effect me too much, but they could improve on how tight they operate and how well they give information to the public.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

money.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I really appreciate having such an inspirational space to study dance. There's artwork all over the building which is really cool.

I really appreciate the experience that the Dance Institute of Washington has allowed myself and my grand-daughter. It is very proffessional and exact but also gives the right amount of norishment for young people to believe in themselves. The instructors are excellent and talented. The envirionment is very warm and inviting. I would suggest to anyone that wants to give their child dance instruction of dance to visit this space. You will be very pleased. Gilda

I have been able to connect with the dance community in a way I was not aware I could. There is a very strong desire to consistently improve on the services to community. The staff is very warm and friendly. I believe the studio needs more exposure. Even though they are in a highly exposed and trafficked location, I think most people need to know that the services they offer are available to all and not just a select group of people. Their target really is the under-privileged.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

As an intern with the Dance Institute of Washington, I was greeted with open arms. Not only were they able to use my skills and abilities to propel the organization to the next level, but also, they were willing to allow me to take dance classes in exchange for my work. There is a spirit of excellence throughout the organization and the staff really works hard to help make others' lives better. DIW represents the community very well by illuminating the area with such an amazing and well-constructed building. I appreciate all of the programs that DIW has implemented to help underserved youth in the area.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

to experience the joy of the children who dance at the Dance Institute of Washington.

We started our daughter in the 4-5 year old class and she loves it! The teacher is warm and caring, as are all the adults we've encountered there. The check in/out process seems secure. It's a perfect intro movement class. Our daughter enjoys showing her new moves to us.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
