We work to stabilize families and then rebuild their lives. We help meet their basic needs (food, shelter, housing) while providing the long-term solutions needed to rebuild their financial and social self-sufficiency, enabling them to break out of poverty.
Community action food bank alleviates hunger by providing food/basic needs packages, counseling, budgeting and referrals to other community services. The program provided 19,931 food and basic needs packages to 5,996 unduplicated households (15,752 people). The food bank also provided food to 26+ community partner organizations for distributions to their low-income clients. The total pounds of food distributed was just over 5 million. The food bank operates several of its own food pantries as well as two community gardens. The expense includes the value of the donated food from community food drives, grocers, food industry, farmers, and usda commodities. Our back packs for kids program served 1,015 children in 10 low-income schools.
the family development and support services program provided a variety of direct services to help eligible households stabilize and work toward self-reliance. These services include: eviction prevention/rent help (107), emergency shelter (466), transportation assistance (598), case management, life skill training, goal setting, and more. In fy 2014, 1,280 households were assisted in this program.
the education/advocacy programs purpose is to connect people with resources in the community and to engage community members as volunteers and in a variety of service opportunities. The program also informs and educates community members about local poverty and hunger. In fy 2014 more than 8,377 people volunteered with the agency.
