The Yucatan Crippled Children's Project began on July 4, 1996, when Dr. Charles Southerland led a team of podiatric physicians on a mercy mission to Merida Mexico to perform surgery on disadvantaged children from the Yucatan Peninsula. Many children have crippling deformities like clubfoot, which are not treated like they are in the U.S. The Project has treated more than 400 children is its first three years. Physicians donate their time and pay for most of their travel expenses.
