Summer AIR Works is a series of three, two-week programs: FilmWorks, ArtWorks, and TheatreWorks. The programs run consecutively and culminate in a combined showcase at the end of the six-week summer.
Summer AIR Filmworks provides participants with two weeks of concentrated film, music and group work study with qualified art professionals. The curriculum provides hands-on theatre activities that enhance group bonding and teamwork. Song writers and music producers are brought in to help the girls write an original song (lyrics and melody). At a fieldtrip to a private recording studio the girls record their song and producers add instrumental tracks. Artistic direction is provided by a professional filmmaker who records the footage and edits the music video. The final product is screened for participants, family members and friends. The exploration of personal and social perspectives is encouraged as well as creative ownership and agency.
Summer AIR Artworks consists of two weeks of concentrated visual art instruction and study in high quality/advanced art areas. The program is run by two qualified art professionals and includes weekly field trips to area museums and art studios. Participants produce art work that incorporates multi-disciplinary art and focuses on a specific theme, i.e.: body image, woman at work, phenomenal woman. At the end of the summer, artists and participants organize an exhibition which is a unique opportunity for the girls to be publicly recognized for their original artwork. The artistic exploration, discussion and commentary on personal as well as cultural perspective is encouraged and integrated into the art curriculum.
Summer AIR Theatreworks provides teenage girls with two weeks of concentrated performance art instruction and dance choreography. The program is run by two qualified theatre and dance professionals. The AIR Theatreworks curriculum includes guest speakers and a fieldtrip to Hackmatack Playhouse. Participants take the reins in the creative process that incorporates multi-disciplinary performance art in singing, dancing, songwriting, poetry and movement. The Theatreworks director and choreographer help assemble one cohesive performance art piece that is inspirational, contextually clear and has a positive message. Expressive exploration is a large part of the performance art curriculum.
