Mission: 3rd bed is a literary journal, now in its fourth year of publication, devoted to promoting innovation in the language arts. Given the current cultural moment in the language arts, wherein literary relevance is determined by large publishing houses with increasingly narrow perspectives, the promotion of innovative work, a literature that tends away from the commercial and the predictable, is essential. What was once the tacit responsibility of large publishing houses is now left to the small presses. No culture is truly vital that does not embrace the full spectrum of artistry of which it is capable. For this reason, our journal focuses on innovative poetry, prose, and art. We publish the work not only of influential figures in the field, such as Robert Coover, Brian Evenson, Bei Dao, Lisa Jarnot, and Layla Ali but also fresh, new voices who will be on the cutting edge of the literary scene of tomorrow. We feel a strong commitment to the beginning author, and much of the material for each issue is unsolicited. Unlike many journals that reject material out of hand, we work extensively with beginning authors, suggesting revisions and ways that pieces can be strengthened so that the creator?s vision is realized. We also have a strong commitment to forging the links of a literary community?one that is both geographical, centered around Providence, and also virtual, based on our web site.
