Mission: The mission of the Biomimicry Institute is to empower people to design nature-inspired solutions for a healthy planet. Biomimicry offers an empathetic, interconnected understanding of how life works and ultimately where we fit in. It is a practice that learns from and mimics the strategies used by species alive today. After billions years of research and development, failures are fossils, and what remains hold the secret to our survival. The goal is to create products, processes, and systems—new ways of living—that solve our greatest design challenges sustainably and in solidarity with all life on earth.
Results: We believe a regenerative future starts when we Ask Nature. AskNature.org, our open-source database with thousands of biological strategies for sustainable innovation, receives 2.5 million views annually. It serves 700,000 users from architecture, engineering, policy, and education fields. The Ray of Hope Prize accelerates nature-inspired startups and has supported 39 innovative ventures to date. The Biomimicry Launchpad empowers innovators to integrate biomimicry into their fields, supporting more than 2,000 participants (55% female) since 2018, addressing 15 UN Sustainable Development Goals. The Youth Design Challenge has engaged over 700 teachers and 12,000 students in 21 countries. Design for Transformation tackles fashion waste by converting discarded textiles into biocompatible materials in partnership with leading organizations.
