Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Civil Rights, Democracy, Government & Public Administration, Public Finance, Taxation & Monetary Policy

Mission: The Project On Government Oversight (POGO) is a nonpartisan independent watchdog that investigates and exposes waste, corruption, abuse of power, and when the government fails to serve the public or silences those who report wrongdoing. We champion reforms to achieve a more effective, ethical, and accountable federal government that safeguards constitutional principles.

Results: POGO is fighting for a fair and just federal government that works for the public, not just for those who have the money and connections to shape public policy for their own private gain. We have earned a reputation as a nonpartisan, honest broker, which makes us a trusted resource among government insiders and decision-makers on both sides of the aisle, enabling us to work toward solutions that will fix America’s democracy. Our investigations team uncovers systemic issues of wrongdoing in the federal government, and focuses on where the government and powerful private interests intersect, a nexus at which corruption and abuse of power can thrive. Our public policy team explores and pushes for evidence-based policy reforms that address the systemic issues our investigations uncover. Our communications team works with the media and the public to educate them about the issues we’ve investigated and to put pressure on decision-makers to pass the reforms that will improve the government.

Geographic areas served: The United States

Programs: • The Center for Defense Information (CDI) aims to secure a far more effective and ethical military at a significantly lower cost. • The Congressional Oversight Initiative (COI) provides congressional staff with resources and knowledge to perform their oversight responsibilities more effectively, therefore strengthening the legislative branch’s ability to counterbalance executive power. • The Constitution Project (TCP) safeguards constitutional rights that are threatened by abuse of the government’s national security and domestic policing powers.

POGO is an organization that actually helps and is effective. Many non-profits, even those that mean well, get little accomplished. I head a non-profit myself and know POGO is one of the best.

POGO is an important tool in the almost futile attempt to allow the public to know what the government is doing. It is unfortunate that we need to have this type of organization but we do. I am very happy to support it and its goals.

POGO merits tremendous admiration and support as the preeminent government "watchdog" today. I hope readers find my opinion credible on the basis of my considerable personal experience as a government "watchdog," as the author of The Art of the Watchdog (with co-author David Eichenthal, SUNY Press 2016), and as a professor of public management teaching investigative techniques at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in the City University of New York.

It's is very clear that with today's "special interest" running amuck in Washington Govt. is highly influenced by either commercial or political partisan interests in a way that does not allow Govt. Dept.s to do their jobs or they bring undue outside pressure not to do the right thing in supporting the public interest.

POGO is in fact, a sad but necessary body to keep Govt. true to it's constituents and keep bureaucratic interests in check!

Year after year, the Project on Government Oversight proves that it is peerless as Washington's premier watchdog of the federal bureaucracy, as well as a safe haven for heroic whistleblowers who, at great personal risk, step up and expose government abuses and misdeeds.

I feel that POGO is one of the most important NGO's that I support. The work they do is essential in researching how our government is functioning and how we can help change things. I only wish I could afford to give more, but as a retired person my resources are very limited.

If all of the Hard Working American People knew the extent of America's Black Budget, they would Join Together and Vote All of the Congress Members that participate in these Actions Out of Office!

This group does an excellent job of exposing and explaining in layman terms the multi layered problems of waste and over spending that our Tax Payer Dollars are spent on. They often go againest the Public Information stories provided by our Government, and are not afraid to tell the truth on many subjects taht concern our Health and Safety. I rely on them to get the real story on all of todays hot issues.

POGO is one of the most informative sites on the internet, containing stories of import and impact not covered by our corporate media, both print and electronic. They do break stories, some of which break through to conventional news outlets. They are an essential adjunct for anyone wanting to know what is really going on around them and beyond the horizon.

This review will not have to be very long. My first bilet in the US Navy was in intelligence, so I am more than familiar with the issues dealt with by POGO and I regard them is among the VERY best investigative journalism groups anywhere. The information they provide is invariably accurate, detailed, cogent, well organized and logically presented. I frequently interact with my Senators and Member of Congress and the command of fact and policy given to me by studying what information POGO provides is invaluable. What I say and write to them gets a serious audience, simply because POGO gives me a command of fact and background.

POGO is a great resource to learn how the Federal Government is spending our tax dollars. POGO does this with facts that other media services either choose to ignore or to selectively use that will benefit their point of view or political position. I trust POGO to tell the whole story without regard to any political party bias.

POGO is often most successful at revealing government fraud, waste, and incompetence because of its independence. Inspectors General and the GAO (where I worked) do a good job much of the time but POGO is amazing in its performance of government oversight.

POGO is an exemplary public-service group that speaks truth to power -- then holds it accountable through practical revelations about the inner workings of government. When analyzing energy and science issues at GAO, I found myself many times crossing POGO's path, as both organizations are dedicated to exposing waste, fraud, and the abuse of power. POGO's methods are more direct that GAOs, and in many ways more effective for their timely revelations.

As a journalist covering the federal government, and as a Senior Analyst at GAO, I have spent decades investigating and exposing foolish and wasteful government programs. POGO is unique in its ability to be an independent and rigorous watchdog for the public interest.

Media do not often tell the whole truth--or it comes out months (and sometimes years) later. POGO tells it like it is, which I really appreciate.

I've used the information I've found to write letters to government officials, reminding them that we elect them to be responsible.

Without the great work and straightforward investigative reporting P.O.G.O. undertakes, we as a nation are left with watered down news bites from within the national political media. A reporter's true worth is measured not by how many friends they have made, but by the power of their enemies. The Project On Government Oversight keeps well hated. I thank them for that.

I do not live in the States but I have close family relations living there and I envy them their Pogo. We do not have anything like Pogo here though such an organisation is sorely needed where corruption seems to pop up behind every corner. Newspapers only partly inform the public at large but nothing is ever officially done and the public is not protected at all. I don't think that anyone even knows what or who whistle-blowers are! Well done, keep up the good work.

It was always clear to all who knew her that her passion and humanity came from a place in the heart, influenced by trying world events that her parent lived through.
She and her staff possess a remarkable blend of idealism and toughness that cuts to the chase as they pull aside assorted layers of mistreatment, inefficiencies, and malfeasance.

I recently received their annual report and I am pleased to see that I am one of a large community of people who support the work done by this institution. Like many of us, I am careful about my giving and each year check third party evaluators like great nonprofits to see how POGO is rated. And every year they are rated the highest by greatnonprofits and other evaluators. This is an organization I will continue to support.

I'm continually impressed with POGO and the watchdog attitude this organization has to bring issues which would normally go unnoticed to the forefront of people's lives. I've learned a great deal about politics by reading their emails. They get everywhere they need to be and utilize clear and concise reporting to bring the subversive to light. Who could ask for more from an organization dedicated to making our country a better, safer, healthier place to live, and to potentially bring us back to really being the greatest and most powerful world leader.

I LIKE WHAT I SAW ON C-SPAN.NO HOLDS BARED, ENGAGE HEAD ON. AN A+ IN MY BOOK.REASEARCH WAS DONE THE WAY I WOULD DO IT BEFORE QUESTIONS WERE ASKED. THAT WAY MOST OF THE TIME THE ANSWER IS KNOWN BEFORE THE QUESTION IS ASKED TO GAUGE INTEGRITY. THESE TYPE OF THINGS HURT EFFORTS INSTEAD OF PRODUCE CARE FOR VETERANS. WE MUST CONTINUE TO HAVE INTEGRITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY. AIRBORNE
