STAT has provided the most AMAZING opportunity to my son and the benefits are countless. Each week, we drive 45 minutes one way to STAT for Equine Therapy with a Physical Therapist. Cat, Lisa, and all of the volunteers have been absolutely wonderful with my son. They make PT, which can be really hard for him, into a fun activity and a bonding experience. His core strength has improved, he is able to use his left side more easily, and his balance and coordination have also improved. He gets far more out of each session than just PT though. The sensory input he receives from riding is calming and helps him regulate his body. The deep connection with the horse builds his confidence. It is so heartwarming to see him kiss and snuggle the horse, and thank him for the ride! The interaction with the staff is great social skills practice, and he has built relationships that he talks about long after his session ends. He has even built skills such as advocating for his needs, when he asks for help, says the belt needs adjusted, or that the saddle is off center. These are all a BIG deal with a child who could not do anything close to this a few years ago. My son loves to teach the staff about science and tell them facts while he rides. The attention he gets from the staff is irreplaceable. After 10 years of 5-7 weekly therapies in Hershey, Raleigh, and Pittsburgh- I can tell you beyond a doubt that STAT is providing the most comprehensive therapy with the most benefits. It is the most amazing nonprofit we’ve ever encountered, and is worthy of all of the praise! They have been a lifesaver as a single mom with an autistic child with many special, physical, and medical needs. As a former Autism Support teacher, I have seen the impact STAT has on autistic individuals and the countless benefits. I would encourage anyone with an autistic loved one to contact STAT. We are so thankful for Cat and her phenomenal vision!
