Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal-Related, Animals, Dogs

Mission: The mission of Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico is to rescue, rehabilitate and place for adoption small companion dogs. Our goal is to place these dogs in loving, forever homes and to do this through a rigorous screening and adoption process. We operate strictly through volunteerism, counting on the generosity of others and of ourselves to further our mission.

Results: As a network of caring foster homes where our dogs are temporarily homed and socialized, and not kenneled, we screen applicants so that our dogs will be accepted by the adopting family. We collaborate with other state-wide rescues to save New Mexico dogs that come from many sources: animal shelters, owner surrenders, and actual abusive situations. In 2016 we rescued over 500 dogs . Since 2001, we have saved thousands of New Mexico shelter dogs.

Target demographics: save New Mexico Shelter Dogs

Direct beneficiaries per year: more than 500 rescued dogs - by successfully adopting them into loving forever homes.

Geographic areas served: Albuqerque, New Mexico

Programs: rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of small companion dogs.

We had THE BEST experience with Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico, specifically our pups foster, Jan Krell. We had just lost our sweet pup of 16 years, to cancer. Fast forward 2 months - and we found the perfect match for us! Miles (formerly Rocky). He has brought so much fun, love and joy to our lives, as well as our other rescue Jazz, not to mention our granddaughter. Thank you LDNM!!! ❤️❤️❤️

This wonderful organization is made up of all volunteers. No one is paid. It is simply a foster based organization. Every one in Lap Dog Rescue offers their homes, time, effort and love to save dogs from kill shelters in the State or owner surrenders.

Dogs are vetted, fed, cared for, loved and trained to get them ready for new homes. Dog are matched to applicants carefully, before being adopted to new loving homes.

I adopted my sweet and loving dog, Foxee, from Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico and am proud to be a LDRNM foster for this group of wonderful people who freely give their time, love and effort to save hundreds of dogs each year.

I’m an 8 year volunteer for LDRNM. I’ve met some of the most inspiring people through my affiliation with this organization. Rescue work isn’t for sissies....it’s hard work that takes the coordination, determination and dedication of many people to get these precious dogs into safe situations, vetted, socialized and ready to be rehomed. It’s very satisfying to know many of these dogs now live like royalty....or rock stars...as they should!

I’ve been a volunteer with this organization since 2012. During this time I’ve seen LDRNM grow, mature, refine its processes and procedures, never satisfied with the status quo or rest on its laurels. Its volunteers are passionate, selfless people who always go above and beyond for the unwanted, unlucky, and unloved dogs of New Mexico and beyond who are in desperate need of medical care and forever homes. They also go above and beyond to help those people who for whatever reason can no longer care for their cherished pets and help them or their families find them loving forever homes. It remains a privilege to be associated with this dynamic and compassionate nonprofit.

I am a new foster with Lap Dog. I am so impressed with their determination to do what is best for the dogs. The dogs I have fostered have needed some serious medical intervention and Lap Dog administration supported them all the way. I really appreciate that. Adopters need to know that many of the dogs listed have had a lot of background work, medical, behavioral, obedience, socialization etc before they are ever listed for adoption. I have met some of the best people with Lap Dog. Thank you.

I got my little Basenji-Chihuahua mix, Cyrus, from LDRNM last May (2018). He is such a joy! LDRNM told me they got him from the Clovis NM shelter 3 days before he would have been euthanized (he had a skin condition at the time). They fostered him into a very handsome boy! He was also crate trained. I can't imagine not seeing that wagging tail when I come home. He's my (and my husband's) snuggle buddy.

I adopted a wonderful little doggie from LDRNM in May of this year. I had just lost my 16-year-old terrier mix in February and was tentative about adopting another dog. Cyrus (a Chi-Basenji mix) was perfect. LDRNM had all the shots, neutering, etc. ready to go. I heard Cyrus was two days away from being euthanized in a shelter in Clovis, NM. I am so glad he's living the high life in Santa Fe now!

We adopted Beauregard (now Iko) 4 years ago. They made an exception for an honorary lapdog because he was a puppy in need. Today at 50+ lbs he is the joy of our lives. He was well socialized and taken care of by his foster family. We had to pass a thorough interview and a home visit. I know that all their rescued dogs are loved from day one. Glad to be part of the Lapdog Rescue family.

They get along with the other dogs and just seem to be so happy to be with all of us. Thank you, Lap Dog Rescue for the awesome job you do caring for and finding homes for these animals. If anyone doesn't know, you can allocate your United Way contribution to Lap Dog Rescue. I did and my company matched my donation!

We adopted two dogs from Lap Dog Rescue about 1.5 years ago. They do a fantastic job of saving these little bundles of love. Our Button is a ray of sunshine, and Jimmy is a little worrier, making sure everyone is good. Both dogs take thier job of "lap dog" very seriously, and if there happens to be an empty lap, it is immediately taken care of with a determined dog. The fact that the dogs are fostered until they are ready to be adopted, and the potential forever homes are screened, adds to the successful placement of these wonderful dogs. We can't say enough about the job these wonderful people do.

They were quick to respond, accommodating to my scheduling needs, and connected me to my new best friend. Tripp (now Charlie Bear) was clearly loved and cared for very well at his foster's home (Thank you, Jan K.). Over the years, we have adopted two lovely fur-babies from lapdog Rescue. The first was Sheba, a 6-year old Pomeranian/Min-Pin mix. Although she only weighed ~14#, she loved to hike, backpack, and camp with us. She was my constant shadow, and a faithful companion to our other dog, Scruffy. After Sheba passed at age 14, we again turned to Lapdog Rescue, and Brian brought us Izzy, a 3-year old miniature schnauzer mix. Izzy is our house diva; she sleeps with us, loves to hike, and wants to go everywhere with me! She is also a good friend to our other two fur-babies, Penny and Skippy. Lapdog Rescue is wonderful, and I always recommend them to any friends who are looking for a new furry family member!!!

Hello!
My name is Laura and I am the happy mama to two NM Lap Dog rescue babies. They are not my pets; they are my family.

September 29th 2017 I lost my family member of 14 years. My dearest Chihuahua companion, Ceraquahui, was/is irreplaceable. I was not sure I was ready to explore a new baby.

I went to a NM Lap Dog fair at Osuna Nursery October 2017 and met Charlotte. She joined me at home and we became inseparable. I soon realized how much I needed her companionship. Within 2 months we met Tiller and he come into our home as our little brother.

These creatures are polar opposites with Tiller being a real guy's guy and Char being the penultimate lady. But they scrap and love one another, as I do them. I never thought I could be more than a one dog woman, but they have shown me the way.

Forever Grateful for NM Lap Dog, Charlotte and Tiller and each day we share.

Lap Dog Rescue helped us find a replacement for our Saint Bernard. Sherman was adopted. We had him for six years when he suddenly went into a health nose dive. We work with our Vets to see if there was anyway to save him. There wasn’t. We realized that our age would not permit another Gentle Giant. We learned about Lap Dog Rescue. We found a mix of Toy Poodle and West Highland Terrier. He won our hearts immediately. He met our one criteria he had to like small kids. He passed with flying colors. We realized he needed a buddy. Lap Dog Rescue came through with a wonderful companion. They are completely bonded. They bring give us love, laughter, and close companionship. We appreciate the fact that Lap Dog Rescue Vets prospective owners. They also do a complete inspection of your home and yard. They also wanted to ensure that the dogs would be able to be around our very young grandchildren. We recommend Lap Dog Rescue to family and friends. Albuquerque is especially Blessed to have them not only for placing rescues but for going in and rescuing them to begin with!

We've adopted 3 dogs from Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico. It's a trustworthy, outstanding non profit. The rescued dogs are fostered in homes by volunteers, all shots are up to date, all neutering and spading is done before a family receives the dog. LDRNM is a gift to dogs and the family that adopts them. Give a rescued dog some love and they will return love back to you forever. LDRNM is #1 in my heart.

I adopted my little Miniature poodle mix from Lap Dog in July 2014. Brian came to the house with Nero to make sure he would have a good and secure home, and Nero has been my almost constant companion since then. We walk twice a day, sleep in the same bed, and share a bond that is heart warming to me. Since I adopted Nero I have donated to Lap Dog Rescue on a regular basis as I know they are a strictly foster organization and need every extra dollar that comes their way. I have such compassion for those who foster the little rescue dogs and am very grateful they rescued Nero and passed him along to me.

Over the past 15 years or so we’ve adopted five rescued dachshunds from Lap Dog Rescue who all became integral members of our family. Each one of these precious little dogs have unique personalities and are simply fountains of love. The real advantage of adopting rescue dogs from LDR is that the foster folks who house them while they await their forever home, socialize them, get to know each dogs quirks, needs and personality, and can help you choose just the right dog for your home. Our LDR rescue posse are a never ending stream of love and endearing entertainment. The first picture is of our remaining four dachshund posse; second picture is of the first two LDR rescues (blue collared one has passed on); and the last picture is of our first two dachshunds, both deceased (not LDR rescues). So, we highly recommend LDR as the source for your next four legged fur baby.

What a wonderful, compassionate, and organized nonprofit. We adopted our beloved dog a year ago and we worked with our pup's foster parents and they were always available and provided support and important information. Lap Dog also provided financial support for neutering through a great Veterinarian clinic nearby. Our experience with Lap Dog was fabulous!

I have been fostering for Lap Dog Rescue since June of 2016. I finally feel like I am doing something that is making a difference, with an amazing group of people who define compassion and caring. I am so grateful for their constant support for the fosters and the love they have for the animals. There is almost nothing they won't do to heal a dog, even if it means expensive surgery and an extended stay with the foster. Proud to be part of this group.

I'm a volunteer with Lap Dog Rescue of NM. I'm always amazed at the generosity of time, money and spirit that people bring to this organization. It's hard work, I admit, to help a little rescued dog who has been neglected, abused, thrown away or has lost its home when its owner is no longer able to care for him/her. Our volunteers pitch in - always - when the need arises. This is a wonderful organization that does wonderful work with absolutely no paid staff.

LDRNM foster families are diligent in providing good interim homes for the adoptees and work with dogs such that they are trained and ready for loving, suitable adopters. I've had my LDRNM baby for 6 years and I will utilize LDRNM if/when I'm again in the position to provide a loving, caring home for a dog waiting for their fur-ever home.

After losing my lab/chow Niki, I waited 2 years and finally decided to get a dog again. I found my sweet Izzy on the LDRNM site and filled out the adoption form. It was surprising how quickly they responded. Brian worked around my schedule to bring her over. I was actually feeling a little skeptical but when she came and sat next to me like she had found me I couldn't resist. You can tell they really care and want all their dogs to find their furever homes. I highly recommend them to anyone! It was obvious she had been well cared for and she had the personality of a happy dog. Great organization filled with caring people.

I was interested in adopting a pet for my husband. He is a truck driver and could use a companion while working away from home. I filled out their request form and within 24 hours got a NO response. It had two sentences, "The foster mom does not feel that the dog would fit this lifestyle. He needs a yard, a companion and training."

I have adopted dogs from other organizations. I was always contacted with more questions, this allowed them to find the best dog for me and allowed me to react to their concerns. This organization just told me that the dog I had put on the application would not fit. They did not offer substitutions.

I did write back, stating the both my husband and I would exercise the dog 2 hours a day with walks and play, we had both trained dogs in the past for search and rescue and would have no problems teaching this dog and as for a friend, well meet and greets would be all he got.

Never once did they offer alternative dogs. If you don't have a traditional family with a yard. Don't bother applying.

How do you mend a broken heart? Lapdog Rescue of NM has the best medicine for a broken heart! Within 48 hours of applying, we had experienced a home visit and our dear Beau was delivered! It was indeed a miracle! One week after losing Lilly Belle’s 3 month old puppy (the one we kept for her…really ourselves), we were not on the road to recovery…the house was QUIET, Lilly Belle was obsessed with us, and there was no more puppy play.
With broken hearts, how could we face a visit to the shelter where we would see so many needy pups and stress about how to choose one? Normally brave, but overwhelmed with sadness, suddenly Facebook revealed that a dear friend “liked” Lapdog Rescue of NM…that was at 8pm Wednesday evening. A message was sent that night, the online application submitted by 10am next morning, home visit same day, Beau brought by Brian, the President of Lapdog Rescue of NM the next afternoon! We had anticipated attending the adoption event that Saturday, but it turned out that since we “loved” the picture of Beau, and passed the reference check and home inspection visit, we didn’t need to go to the event (and Brian said that it was easier on the puppy not to have to attend).
Discovery of Lapdog Rescue of NM was exceptional treatment for our broken-hearts! It was amazing to learn that they follow specific enlightened precepts developed by Brian’s mother, who founded the organization more than 20 years ago. These precepts include:
1. All rescues are fostered in homes by experienced foster families (our Beau was bottle fed from birth!).
2. Socialization (people, other dogs, cats, potty-training) is an important part of preparing Lapdogs for adoption.
3. Home inspection visits are required.
4. References are required.
5. Lapdogs come with a package of information specific to their history and needs.
6. All shots, chipping and neuter/spay costs are included in the fee.
7. Advice about the correct food is clear and directive (we changed to a recommended food from one that has been associated with serious side-effects).
Lapdog Rescue of New Mexico rescued our puppy, and importantly they rescued us!
Today is Valentine’s Day – one month ago Brian brought a 5 month old Chihuahua puppy named Beau (bottle fed since birth!!) into our home and now our hearts are on the mend. We are so grateful and know that this organization will continue to serve our community with the high standards and goals that produce the best and most heart-felt love-matches! Thank you to Brian and his mother, all the foster-families and to those that are adopting from Lapdog Rescue of New Mexico!

I've been an animal person all my life, then a Vet Tech, then Pet Sitter.
We've always had rescue animals, they are the best...

When I suddenly lost my dog to an unexplained illness I needed a new one STAT to help my medical issues, just having a dog next to me helped more than I really knew.

Knowing dogs like I do I didn't want just any rescue this time around, I wanted one that had a story and who's human helpers knew and and had been vetted.

Lap Dog Rescue of NM is to date the only rescue I personally know of who tests for heartworm, does fecal testing, even erlichia testing, along with spay/neuter, and routine vaccinations before they put them up for adoption.

Then they add is socializing and doggy door training to boot, sometimes more.

I got a great dog that everyone knew of and loved.

She fits in with me and my family perfectly.

I was so happy with the entire situation, I'm now volunteering for them, it's an inspiring group of people!!!

Our dog Loki came from LDRNM. They had a fairly rigorous application and home visit protocol, which I appreciated, both to make sure that we were right for Loki and that he was right for us. Brian did a full inspection of our house and yard, made sure that our other dogs were not going to be aggressive to Loki, and gave us some guidance and info about Loki and how to acclimate him to his new home. I have encountered so many people who have gotten wonderful dogs thru LDRNM. They do very good work and I will get any future dogs thru them and recommend them to anyone I know!

Lap Dog does a tremendous amount of good with a small budget and a group of volunteers with giant hearts. We adopted one of our rescue dogs from them, and they required a home visit to make sure the dog was going to a good home. We know several of the volunteers, who always have dog treats and leashes in their vehicles in case they see a pup in need on the side of the road. Lap Dog is well-organized and dedicated. They are also transparent; I reviewed their IRS form 990 online and was amazed at how much they accomplish with a limited budget.

For 15 years I have fostered for Lap Dog Rescue, this nonprofit rescue consistently runs a very well organized, well managed organization. The welfare of the animal is intensely focused on. This rescue has a very long track record of integrity, dedication and many of the fosters have been with Lap Dog for many years. In the age of big nonprofits that have a lot of overhead, Lap Dog runs a tight ship with ethics and a protocol that all volunteers follow. This is a rescue with a long history of experience, compassion and because Lap Dog has a good number of dedicated volunteers and fosters, event planners, making it one of the best examples of a volunteer, non profit that remains steadfast and stable.

I have worked with Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico for over 10 years. In a day of questionable charities in the news, it is with full endorsement that I can say that LDRNM is a solid, well run, ethical and dependable nonprofit. They work tirelessly to help end the suffering of small dogs throughout our state.
They tend to have very dedicated and long term fosters and local businesses that promote their dogs and adoption clinics. This rescue has a very good standing in our community and their reputation is well earned and deserved.

We were blessed to adopt our two Pom babies from Lap Dog Rescue the loves of our lives. Both came from bad situations and we were chosen to give the their forever home. Brian was wonderful very interested in finding them the best home not just placing them in the first home.

If a committed dog advocate like Mary Tovey Dolch has chosen to work with Lap Dog Rescue for so many years, the non-profit must be doing something very right. From what I see, it is not only a focused and well run organization, but also appears to be very inclusive, drawing on the talents of many to serve its mission. Bravo!

On 11/14/15 we adopted the dearest, most wonderful little dog from Lap Dog Rescue.

His foster caregiver was thoughtful, candid and helped save our Walter from a horrible situation. She was the human bridge between a miserable life and the life he deserved.

We have become regular donors and loyal supporters of the organization; and we think of them every time we pet our doggie.
