Having Canine Assisted Therapy coming to Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital has been a game changer for our staff morale and lifting our patients/families that are going through a difficult time during healing from any type of sickness. The Canine Assisted Therapy team that we have coming a few times a week to our facility has been incredible, amazing, kind, engaging and truly have left employees and patients in tears due to having the dogs right next to them. We have had patients/families that were missing their dogs at home that really connect with these dogs as well. This has really helped with the staff morale as well. We have done many patient room visits who have been extremely grateful for this service. Here are some amazing photos that we have captured with our visits from Canine Assisted Therapy. They have come out to two major events we hosted for our team members to have some pet therapy available!! The partnership has been truly a blessing to our facility! Mission: To improve the health and well-being of people in need through the healing power of the human-animal bond. Utilizing our certified handlers and their therapy dogs, we are dedicated to providing pet therapy to children and adults who have developmental, emotional, or physical challenges, as well as those in need of comfort and companionship
Results: Canine Assisted Therapy was selected as the winner of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce Small Business Award in the Creative Pivot category. The organization was selected as a Hidden Hero by the Community Foundation of Broward for our work in the community. In addition, the organization received a Guidestar Platinum Seal of Transparency, as well as Proclamations from the cities of Ft. Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, and Oakland Park for providing bite prevention education in the communities. October 25, 2019 was named Canine Assisted Therapy Day by the Broward County Board of Commissioners in honor of the organization's 10 year anniversary. Our Board Chair, Nancy Brown, won Board Leader of the Year at the 211 Nonprofit Awards ceremony in 2024.
Target demographics: Individuals with special needs, pediatric patients, isolated seniors, Veterans, at-risk youth, hospice patients and families, victims of violence or trauma, and many others
Direct beneficiaries per year: Over 55,000 individuals in Florida
Geographic areas served: South Florida hospitals, shelters, schools, special needs facilities, nursing homes, hospice, treatment centers , courthouses, etc.
Programs: Our Read-a-thon program in schools serves children that have been identified as "at risk" or reading below grade level. Therapy dogs sit with children each week to listen to books read aloud which gives the children a chance to practice their literacy skills. The Performing Canine Magic Program provides therapeutic goals and interventions for veterans with PTSD, individuals with traumatic brain injuries or Cerebral Palsy, physical and occupational therapy patients and children on the autism spectrum. Animal Assisted Activities Teams help the elderly in assisted care facilities or senior care centers relieve loneliness and anxiety by interacting with the dogs. Therapy dogs also interact with Alzheimer’s patients. Bite Prevention Program educates children about the safe and appropriate way to interact with dogs. TeleDog Program provides pet therapy visits virtually.
