Programs: Youth development:the ymca is committed to nurturing the potential of every child and teen by cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, leadership skills, better health and nutrition, life-long fitness and educational achievement.

club kid: we have grown to now offer 23 before and after school programs, 22 of which are school based and we provide quality, affordable care to an average of 1375 children each day, serving ages 5-12 throughout all of orange county. The ymca serves every school district in orange county with the exception of warwick, newburgh, and tuxedo. All of the sites are school based with the exception of our middletown programs at the 'center' on liberty street in middletown. All sites strive to meet hepa standards for nutritious snacks and are licensed by the state of new york. Our program in middletown participates in the cacfp snack reimbursement program, and as a result of this program, can offer more nutritious snacks, which include fresh vegetables, fruit, etc. All programs offer tutorial assistance, healthy snacks, physical activity, outdoor play time, tennis at some of our sites in partnership with the usta, (some offer swimming), arts and social competency skills, all led by trained, caring, positive adult role models. We also provide programs to over 235 additional children during the school vacation periods or the singular days off for teacher's trainings at our middletown or monroe locations. During 2017 the demand for financial assistance in many of our sites grew considerably. In our chester site alone 25% of the program was subsidized. Overall, approximately 13% of the participants receive financial subsidization through proceeds/donations from our strong kids campaign. We provided a total of $92,451 of scholarship aid to club kid participants and offered families that participated in club kid a 50% financial assistance discount for family memberships. As the strengths and success of these programs are almost solely built on the quality of staff we continued to develop our training programs by offering two full days of training, one in the fall and one in the spring, where a complex series of course offerings are provided by a number of qualified trainers who are experts in the field, as well as seasoned childcare professionals. This all with the common goal of further preparing the staff to deal with the unique and often special challenges of many of our participants. We supplement those main trainings with monthly trainings with our site directors. Additionally, we serve 28 young people in a middle school afterschool program housed in the monroe branch, and an additional 24 young people from the middletown middle schools, who are served at the center facility on liberty street. Nursery school and universal pre-kindergarten: we provide (half day) and (full day) enrichment programs (morning and afternoon) for (91) three and four year olds, as well as a kindergarten readiness program for an additional 68 children. Both of these programs expanded exponentially during 2017. Our contract for universal pre-kindergarten with the middletown school district was expanded to serve even more children in both a morning and afternoon program. Our preschool program was expanded by two new classroom spaces, which went into operation in september. While cognitive development and school readiness are a primary focus of these programs, we supplement the traditional school readiness program with an incredible music program, some stem curricula, a pe program that also includes swimming classes at our highland avenue facility two blocks away from the center, and a number of special/often seasonal events that involve the families. The children and families served by the center are representative of every ethnic group and family makeup that exists in a four mile radius to the center. The center prides itself on this diversity. We provided $26,070 in scholarship assistance in 2017 and offered families that participated in nursery school or upk 50% financial assistance for family memberships. Day camps: with the resurgence of camp robbins in walden, the ymca now offers six different day camp programs. Middletown served an average of 224 children, from ages 3-15, and for the first time this year the middletown program was divided into two camps. The 'summer squad' camp now serves the older (ages 9-15) group while camp funshine is geared toward ages 3-8. We began a partnership with st. Paul's methodist church in middletown, where the camp hosted an international student from germany/spain for the last three weeks of camp and we look forward to expanding that partnership in 2018. The counselor in training program for this camp is growing dramatically, now that the 12-15 year old participants are transported to camp robbins where they can experience that outdoor setting and work on leadership skills. Our sullivan camp, which we run for the town of thompson, continues to serve over 200 children for a seven week period. For the second year we offered three (1) week mini camps at our beautiful sullivan location offering a weekly average of 33 children a low ropes experience, boating on our pond, hiking, and an expanded emphasis on outdoor education. Our program in harriman state park, (camp discovery) serves an average of 280-300 children each week during the summer months and once again was voted the number one day camp in the region. Camp robbins averaged 61 campers each session and offers bus transportation from the newburgh area of orange county. Our monroe branch offered a preschool summer camp experience on site at the branch. The program averaged 18-20 children each day and received great reviews. Each program serves a distinctly different population in very unique settings, with the common thread of developing life skills and social competency skills while exposing the children to a variety of active sports and arts. Additionally, all camps conduct family evenings, where the families are invited, children perform, and the family members are provided a 'taste' of their child's day at camp. We continued our literacy program in all of our camps. Our leaders in training (lit) and counselor in training (cit) programs continued to expand with an average of 35 young people in each session in camp discovery while the middletown and the camp robbins programs co-participated in training/leadership events which we expect to expand in coming years. Out of the 850 children enrolled each week, 15% are receiving financial assistance. A total of $38,451 in financial assistance was provided, and 1025 unduplicated children were served in 2017. Aquatics: 2017 was the first full year of operation for our new pool in middletown and the participation grew exponentially. Our series of water exercise classes grew and ultimately averaged 45-50 participants per class. Our population of lap swimmers, which ranges in ages, almost doubled. An average of 485 children from ages six months to twelve years participated in a series of weekly instructional swim programs. Approximately 1560 unduplicated children were served in 2017. We served an additional 255 youth from a variety of group homes and local private schools. We continued our outreach to 99 children who represent over fifty families who home school. Additionally, we expanded youth instructional programs at beacon high school, serving an average of 30 children each session. Most of these programs generally run in 9 week sessions and are considered the finest aquatic instruction in orange/sullivan counties. We also expanded our adaptive aquatics programs, serving an average of 18-20 individuals each session in one on one programs, as well as scheduling specific times for special needs groups and programs. We once again dramatically increased our lifeguard and first aid trainings which certified over 155 different young people from throughout orange county. The ymca of middletown is responsible for training close to 60% of the lifeguards who serve at pools, lakes, and other public swimming areas throughout our service area. Our weekend family swim times are averaging 60-80 children and adults as the schedule is synched with our new youth/family recreation center (the lyons center) that formerly housed the original pool. The combination of the two activities are very attractive to young families who want to spend quality time together in a recreational setting. A highlight in 2017 was our first 'flick and float', a family movie night, where families floated on tubes and noodles while watching a great family movie. Seventy-five people attended this first event, with additional events planned for 2018. Our competitive swim team (barracudas) has grown to serve 64 young people. The team continues to practice at middletown high school utilizing the ymca pool holidays and school closings. Though the team is relatively small in comparison to other area swim teams it serves a number of children with a high quality, affordable, experience supported by an army of wonderful, committed parent volunteers.
