Mission: Sky family ymca puts judeo-christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy mind, body and spirit for all. We offer health and wellness and sports programs to people of all ages, provide pre-school and after school child care, and collaborate with other local not-for- profit agencies to assist community members in various aspects of life including strengthening families.
Programs: Wellness: sky family ymca has been addressing various community health issues for years, and recently there has been a focus on childhood obesity and diabetes. Youth physical fitness is promoted through fitness classes targeting that age group and the design of a new youth-specific wellness area. Each day at our facilities, over 4,300 youth, teens, adults, and seniors work to improve their health and wellness. There are over 400 group exercise classes offered per week. The ymca has also transitioned the cardiac phase iii center from the local hospital to our venice facility. 87 cardiac patients are assisted and monitored by a full-time cardiac care specialist that is on staff at the ymca. Wellness programs are extremely useful to participants recovering from other illnesses and injuries as well. Sports: in 2017, over 3,095 kids participated in sky family ymca's sports programs. Sports leagues are offered to children ages three years through eighteen years in soccer, basketball, tee-ball, baseball, flag football, archery, volleyball, lacrosse and martial arts. The "y winners" philosophy is utilized, which ensures equal playing time for all children, regardless of their skill level. Aquatics and gymnastics are two of our other sports departments. Programs and classes are offered in these sports in competitive and non-competitive environments. In 2017, over 358 kids learned to swim in our aquatics program. The competitive swim team currently has about 158 participants. The gymnastics department offers instruction in dance, cheerleading, rock climbing and gymnastics to kids from pre-school age to teenagers. Scholarship assistance totaling over 14,448 was provided to participants in sports programs in 2017.
pre-school care: sky family ymca operates a pre-school in the venice community, providing full-day care from 7:00 am - 6:00 pm. We provide safe, loving, affordable care for over 147 children ages six weeks to five years. In 2017, we discounted our rates to assist needy families in our preschools by over 67,500. These funds are obtained through our special events and annual giving campaigns and are also subsidized through membership fees. Currently, 33% of the families enrolled in the preschools participate at a subsidized rate through ymca scholarship assistance or through funding from the early learning coalition. Approximately 27% of our participants are currently living at or below the federal poverty level. Our pre-school is licensed through the department of children and families, which ensures that the center adhere to strict guidelines that improve the quality of care that is provided. The site has contracted with the early learning coalition and with the state of florida's voluntary pre- kindergarten program. School age care: sky family ymca's school age care program provides before and after-school care for youth from kindergarten through eighth grade. The program is available at nine sites, including four ymca branches and five schools. Before-school care begins at 6:45 am, and after-school care ends at 6:00 pm. For students at which we do not offer the program at their school, the youth are bussed to the ymca. During the school year, approximately 1,269 students participate in school age care. Daily activities available include learning centers, homework help and tutoring, arts and crafts, group games, and physical fitness. The ymca also has two ymca reads sites offered through school age care. This program provides free extensive reading tutoring from trained staff and volunteers in a one-on-one setting for students from kindergarten through third grade. The sky family ymca programs all rank at the top in the state in regards to qualification of coordinators, delivery of instruction, student attendance hours, number of mentors, and support services offered by the sky family ymca. Full-day school age programs are also offered to youth throughout the year when school is not in session. The programs are available from 6:45 am to 6:00 pm and were attended by 1,915 children this year. In 2017, the ymca provided discounted rates of over 165,728 to needy families in the school age program. The program is licensed through the department of children and families.
