We received a telephone call 1/25/13 am, identifying themselves from Yad L' Shabbat, with a caller ID telephone number that is no longer in service. Usually I don't even answer the phone, letting the answering machine do its thing. This time, however, a little bird prompted me to answer. I spoke to a very nice man, who was gracious and patient, and answered everything I wanted to know, to the best of his knowledge and ability. Yad L'Shabbat is an organization that provides food and necessities to the poor in Israel. Typically these callers are very pushy and crude. This individual was as nice as they come. Very unusual. The organization does NOT accept credit cards, but do send out envelopes, which is fine with me. Why not credit cards? For the obvious reason: security. Besides, people can easily contact the credit company and stop payment/dispute the charge.
Will I actually send any donation? Probably yes, even though it is unregistered with the local BBB or any such affiliation. It is not a fortune I will be donating, and hopefully the money will go towards a needy cause.
