Mission: The mission of westport cooperative services is to encourage and develop cooperative solutions to community needs in the kansas city metro area.
Programs: The senior companion program is the largest program sponsored by westport cooperative services (wcs). In 2011, 82 volunteers provided over 80,000 hours of service to 135 families in need of help with their aging loved ones. In addition to helping keep seniors out of institutional living and in familiar surroundings, the program provides senior volunteers with a sense of community and purpose in their own lives. It also provides them with additional income to meet their own expenses.
the medicare assistance program helps seniors navigate the ever-changing, complex medicare system. Trained counselors can help seniors sign up for medicare, sort through billing issues, determine if the client qualifies for additional help through the state of missouri, and sign up for a part d prescription drug plan. Over 1,423 clients were served by the wcs group in 2011 which was comprised of one full-time paid counselor and ten trained volunteers.
the meals on wheels program at wcs provided 8,580 meals to homebound elderly clients in 2011. Along with the meals comes a friendly visit and noonday check to make sure they are doing well. The program is one of only two in the kansas city area run by a mostly volunteer staff. In 2011 there were over sixty (60) volunteers involved in this program.
other vital programs wcs provides to the local community include the back to school program, making certain children have the supplies they need to start the school year off well-equipped.
