UICM focuses on the Black Hills community in Grand Rapids, MI. The Black Hills is one of the poorest neighborhoods in Grand Rapids. UICM provides kids programs throughout each week and provides mentoring and tutoring support to kids in the community. We operate a bike shop called "The Motion Initiative" where kids can earn a bike by learning basic shop skills. We also sponsor a weekly community dinner every Wednesday during the summer months. Our typical attendance is around 300 people from the community. During the Covid-19 crisis we have been providing 920 meals per week to families in the neighborhood.
Over half of our board members live in the community. We are in the community every day and know the families personally. This allows us provide help quickly and effectively.
