Mission: The Thornton W. Burgess Society was founded in 1976 as a non-profit education organizatio to carry on the pioneering conservation work of author/naturalist Thornton W. Burgess. The Society operates the Thornton W. Burgess Museum, The Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen and the East Sandwich Game Farm.
Programs: The Society provides unique educational experiences outside of traditional classroom learning and its programs in the natural sciences are the most extensive of their kind in the region. During the past year the education department's outreach programs served over 6,500 students in 2 private and 45 public schools as well as 27 preschools. In addition to school programs, the Society's education department offers a full range of public programs for children, families and adults. The education philosophy of the Society is to offer program opportunities that allow for interaction with nature and exploration of self in a nurturing environment.
