I first learned about The youth center when my son wanted to go to summer camp and I sen him to the "wrong one" - he wanted not just any summer camp but wanted "the fun one" done by The Youth Center!Since then my 3 kids grew up with the Youth Center, not just the day camp but also participating in the Leadership academy, volunteering at The tree Lot and as a counselor. When they graduated from high school, the executive director of the youth center asked me to say a few words about what it meant to them and I was honored to speak to the board and supporters. I also learned about what the board does to support this great organization and joined as board member later that year. The things our non-profit does help not just the kids but the entire community as we help other non-profits with our tree Lot and entire families with our programs.I am grateful for the help The Youth Center gave our children, and proud of my contribution back to the organization to help others.

I have been The Youth Center’s marketing intern for 1.5 years, and this organization displays an unparalleled care for youth. The Youth Center offers so many affordable, enriching programs for kids, and their interest in helping them succeed is evident in how many of their students and campers return as volunteers and staff members. I see how much fun kids have at Camp S.H.A.R.K. and Girls in STEM, and they also learn so much, with opportunities for field trips, learning to play an instrument, and reading from The Youth Center’s library. I am also grateful for the opportunities The Youth Center has given me with my internship. I am learning invaluable communication and leadership skills, as well as getting articles published in local newspapers. I love my marketing team that I work with; everyone is so supportive. The Youth Center is fantastic at uplifting people, whether that be an employee of the month or an outstanding student. We are lucky to have The Youth Center as part of our community.

I've had the privilege of being a part of The Youth Center community for the past three years, and my experience has been nothing short of extraordinary. Nestled in the heart of Los Alamitos, CA, this nonprofit organization has been a beacon of hope and enrichment for the local youth, and I am proud to have contributed to its noble cause.

My journey began as a camp counselor at Camp S.H.A.R.K., where every summer unfolded as a vibrant tapestry of joy, learning, and growth. The children, brimming with personality, made every day a new adventure. Field trips became memorable explorations, arts and crafts sessions transformed into creative havens, and engaging in science experiments and cooking classes added an educational flair to the mix. The boundless enthusiasm of the kids was infectious, creating an atmosphere of pure enjoyment.

What sets The Youth Center apart is the strong sense of community that permeates every program. The bonds I forged with both the children and the dedicated staff have become the cornerstone of my experience. As a camp counselor, I not only witnessed the children's individual growth but also saw the impact of a caring and supportive environment on their overall well-being.

Beyond the summer camp, I also served as an After School Program staff member, engaging with the kids in a more academic setting. Tutoring sessions, homework assistance, and an array of entertaining activities fostered an environment where learning was synonymous with fun. The dedication of the staff was evident in the thoughtful planning and execution of each program, leaving a lasting impression on both the children and me.

One of the standout features of The Youth Center is its commitment to accessibility. Despite the exceptional quality of the programs offered, the organization maintains affordable prices, ensuring that a wide range of families can benefit from the enriching experiences provided.

Having grown up in Los Alamitos, being able to give back to my community through The Youth Center has been immensely fulfilling. It's not just a place of work; it's a second home where passion, dedication, and compassion converge to create a positive impact on the lives of the youth.

In conclusion, my three years at The Youth Center have been marked by laughter, learning, and the joy of making a difference in the lives of the next generation. The organization's commitment to fostering growth, both academically and personally, is truly commendable. I look forward to continuing my journey with The Youth Center, contributing to the positive change it brings to our community.

I volunteered for The Youth Center after school program. The staff was very welcoming and willing to show me the ropes every step of the way. I loved witnessing the staff interact with both middle school kids and elementary kids. The children have a great time playing games with the staff. I could tell the staff members really work hard to gain and keep the kids’ trust and will be there for these kids for anything they need including homework help or if they need a friend.

My experience with the Youth Center in Los Alamitos has been truly exceptional. This nonprofit organization consistently goes above and beyond, establishing a standard that sets it apart from other youth centers.

Upon my initial engagement with the Youth Center, it became apparent that they prioritize the well-being and growth of every young individual. Their commitment to providing diverse and enriching programs is particularly noteworthy. In contrast to other centers, they offer a wide range of activities, including educational workshops, Girls in STEM, the Adopt A Family Program, Mindfulness Workshops, Music Academy, Therapy For Kids: View U, Tutoring, Kids Night Out and community outreach initiatives.

The staff at the Youth Center consistently demonstrates a commitment to creating a safe and inclusive space for all. They go the extra mile, actively encouraging open dialogue and providing resources for mental health support (View U). This approach creates an atmosphere that surpasses the typical offerings of other youth centers.

Another standout quality is their dedication to community involvement. The Youth Center in Los Alamitos extends its impact beyond immediate surroundings, actively participating in regional and even national initiatives. Their outreach programs and collaborative efforts with other organizations reflect a commitment to making a lasting impact beyond their physical location.

In summary, the Youth Center in Los Alamitos serves as an exemplary nonprofit organization driven by a genuine passion for youth development. Their commitment to excellence, personalized approach, and community impact far exceed the expectations set by other youth centers. I am grateful for the positive influence they've had on the lives of young individuals and wholeheartedly recommend the Youth Center to anyone seeking an extraordinary and transformative youth-focused experience.

Our Gratitude to The Youth Center for Camp SHARK Scholarship

As a parent, navigating through unexpected challenges can be incredibly daunting, especially when it concerns providing enriching experiences for our children. However, amidst the uncertainties, there are beacons of hope, and for our family, that guiding light came in the form of The Youth Center's Camp SHARK scholarship program.

Two years ago, our world turned upside down when my husband unexpectedly lost his job. Suddenly, our once stable financial situation became precarious, and we found ourselves struggling to make ends meet. As the bills piled up and worries mounted, the idea of offering our sons a memorable summer experience seemed like an impossible dream.

Then came the incredible support from The Youth Center. Their Camp SHARK scholarship program not only granted our two boys the opportunity to attend camp but also provided a sense of normalcy and joy during an otherwise challenging period in our lives. It's difficult to express just how much this gesture meant to our family.

From the moment our sons stepped foot into Camp SHARK, they were greeted with warmth and inclusivity. The program not only offered exciting activities and adventures but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and personal growth. Each day, they returned home brimming with stories of new friendships made, skills learned, and memories cherished.

Beyond the enriching experiences for our children, The Youth Center's unwavering support extended far beyond the confines of the campgrounds. Their understanding and empathy during our family's time of need provided a glimmer of hope and reassurance. Their commitment to helping families like ours through challenging times is truly commendable.

Today, as I reflect on the journey we've traveled, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for The Youth Center and their Camp SHARK scholarship program. Thanks to their generosity and support, our family not only weathered the storm but emerged stronger and more resilient. My husband has found new employment, and we are gradually rebuilding our lives.

To The Youth Center and all those who support its mission, we extend our heartfelt thanks. Your kindness and generosity have made a profound difference in our lives and the lives of countless other families. We will forever cherish the memories created at Camp SHARK and carry the lessons learned with us as we continue our journey forward.

All of my kids got their start in band/music careers in the Youth Center’s top-rate elementary after school program. Both my girls learned so much from working with the Youth Center in Junior High and High school to get their Girl Scout Silver and Gold Awards. While we did not need childcare, I am so happy that we have this nonprofit in our community for all the families that do need it and I support these programs on a regular basis.

I have the privilege of being a Board Member for The Youth Center and have never felt so honored. This is such a kind, loving and giving organization that strives to make differences in children's lives by providing a place to go after school, on the weekends, for spring breaks and summer! It provides a safe place for kids less fortunate offering several programs such as: Girls in STEM, View U, Camp Shark, and Music academy to name a few. In addition to scholarships and grants that will give kids a chance to succeed. They give us so much hope and happiness, and I am so thankful to be a part of making decisions and serving as an advocate for this organization. It all starts with the kiddos!

I was a community volunteer of Every 15 Minutes program. It was a physically demanding day, but I was happy to take on the challenge. I learned that the statistics have improved from a death every 15 minutes to every 30 minutes. I think it was more impactful for the older students. The program is excellent. We would rather see students participate in the Every 15 Minutes program than see them in the Mortuary. Thank you so much for asking us to participate. We look forward to 2025.

I am a community volunteer of Every 15 Minutes program. I was glad to be a part of it. The hardest thing for me to go through was to chalk a girl that I remembered when her mom was pregnant with her.

What I’ve found over the years, is that it’s the leaders that generally stand up to apply to be a part of this program. They do it because of their altruistic hearts and because they are looked up to it’s even more impactful, but I would also encourage the quieter ones because there’s a sense of that’s me. In case I think it’s important to lean into the uncomfortable, because that’s where the biggest impacts come from, be uncomfortable and awkward so hopefully someone thinks twice before they do something that leaves them with no choices. This is an excellent program!

This organization really helps people! Not just a great children's program but they offer leadership skills to teens, and opportunities for young girls in the STEM program. Teens can spend their summers exploring new things at the Summer Teen Camp while their younger siblings enjoy Camp SHARK. Their afterschool program allows kids from 1st-8th grade to decompress after school and also get homework help if needed. They really have something for everyone!

After Covid it feels like everyone has been playing a game of catch-up for the past few years, but the Youth Center has taken initiative and is already taking steps to make sure every student and their families feel supported. I began interning at the Youth Center this year through my university's social work program and could not be happier with my placement. The staff clearly care about the students and are constantly looking for more ways to help the community. Since day one of my internship we have been working on the upcoming ViewU program which will help any students who have developed unhealthy behaviors and create a safe, open space to talk. They will also learn new skills to help address the rising issues we have been seeing in schools since the beginning of the pandemic. The Youth Center is a fun and supportive resource that I would recommend to anyone and everyone.

The Youth Center in Los Alamitos has been around since 1952 serving children and their families with valuable programs and activities to benefit them. They touch the lives of more than 3,000 youth a year in their summer camps, after school programs, music education programs.
If my kids were school-aged I would definitely have them go here.

I first heard about The Youth Center towards the end of my junior year at Los Alamitos High. New to the area, I wanted to find a way to get involved and get to know my community. Since that summer volunteering for the program now known as Camp Shark, I’ve gained valuable work experience, become more in touch with my community, and gotten to know countless kids and friends because if my involvement with this awesome organization. The next summers I spent as a staff member, and now work at the after school program. I have loved seeing The Youth Center expand and grow, and as much as it has given back to the kids, it has given back to me as well.

I grew up in Los Alamitos and I remember participating in several programs at the Youth Center. My favorite by far was the Leadership Academy in 2015; I learned a lot of important life skills that I took with me to college and the workplace. Now I actually work with the Youth Center, which I could not be happier about. It is very fulfilling to know that we are enriching the lives of community kids with our music program, after-school care, summer camps, and other services.

Growing up I would hear a lot about The Youth Center from my friends. Although I didn’t attend The Youth Center’s after school program or summer camps, I always heard about their remarkable impact that they left in my community. When I was young I would attend their Halloween maze, and once I was old enough I would volunteer at their Christmas Tree lot. Now as an employee I find myself extremely lucky to be a part of such a special organization. I highly recommend this location as a special place to allow kids to grow and achieve their academic and social goals while also having a lot of fun!

I have been involved with The Youth Center for 15 years, first as a parent, then as a board member and volunteer. I have planned, participated in many events to raise money for this wonderful non -profit. The Youth Center has been a difference in my son's life who is now 24 years old. They have helped instill core values, the spirit of volunteerism and helping others which he still does.

Every year I am amazed at how many children The Youth Center serve and the many ways in which they add new components to each of their programs every year. They take the time to solicit "client" feedback from children and their parents in order to ensure they meet and even exceed their expectations. Children and teens want to return every year and the fact that they provide scholarships to local families in need is impressive. This past year they've also focused on building new relationships in the community with corporations, city governments and small business and have tripled the amount of volunteers who are interested in helping children grow in mind, body and spirit and on ensuring that The Youth Center is always here for them. I am proud to be a donor and to have the privilege to be involved with them. This is one community resource that we cannot do without -- no organization provides services for children in our area they way they do and with such care.

My son loves Camp Shark and RASCALS! He reads every day and made a lot of new friends. During the last summer he went on trips, participated in science experiments, played lots of sports, and learned how to play a lot of "old" school board games. What a blast! We can't wait till next summer. Staff is truly exceptional at The Youth Center. They truly care about children. Thank you for what you do for our kids.

I have been a volunteer for The Youth Center for 4 years and the staff and board members are caring, helpful, and dedicated to helping children and nearby communities. Jay is ever diligent in watching and caring for the children. He ran the summer camp this year and it was a huge success with the parents and most importantly the kids.
All the staff, Julie, Lorie and the young men and women who watch the children at the after school program and camps are ready to wipe a tear, help with homework, play games, and listen when a child needs to talk.

Lina Lumme (Executive Director) is a dynamo when it comes to getting donations, making fund raising events fun and profitable, and making the community aware of what The Youth Center does. She cares deeply for the children and is herself an active volunteer in several organizations in Los Alamitos and nearby communities

The Youth Center is a busy but organized place where children can feel safe, learn, and have fun.

I am proud to be associated with this wonderful place.

They are so dedicated to making Los Alamitos Youth Center a place that kids love to go to have fun, learn, do their homework, and be safe.. There is so much activity among the kids. Lots of happy noise. The staff is never too busy to answer a child's question or help him in the computer room. I love going there.

I first learned about The youth center when my son wanted to go to summer camp and I sen him to the "wrong one" - he wanted not just any summer camp but wanted "the fun one" done by The Youth Center!

Since then my 3 kids grew up with the Youth Center, not just the day camp but also participating in the Leadership academy, volunteering at The tree Lot and as a counselor.

When they graduated from high school, the executive director of the youth center asked me to say a few words about what it meant to them and I was honored to speak to the board and supporters. I also learned about what the board does to support this great organization and joined as board member later that year.

The things our non-profit does help not just the kids but the entire community as we help other non-profits with our tree Lot and entire families with our programs.

I am grateful for the help The Youth Center gave our children, and proud of my contribution back to the organization to help others.

From attending as children, to volunteering over 1,200 hours (as a family) or working there as an employee, The Youth Center and their have dedicated themselves to changing These children's lives, one child at a time. My son first attended Camp S.H.A.R.K., the summer camp that The Youth Center puts on every year, and he absolutely loved it. Not only did it give him a place to go to during the summer, but he made new friends, he stayed active, he played games, created art, and so much more. In fact, even months in the winter after camp was done and over, he kept asking me, "When do I get to go back to Camp S.H.A.R.K.?"

Every time I went to the park to drop or pick him up, all the kids were participating in fun activities together and playing outside, having a great time. The staff members are so attentive, caring and always demonstrate that they want to be there and truly care about your kids and their safety.

My son also loves attending Kids Night Out, which takes place once a month at The Youth Center. Each month there is a different theme. It gives him a chance to get out and do some fun activities with others. He never wants me to pick him by the time I come back to get him. He's sometimes one of the last ones to leave.

I'm just so grateful that this is an affordable, safe and fun place for him to go to where he can look back on one day and remember that he had an incredible childhood growing up.

As an active board member for just a little over a year, I have to say it has been an incredible experience being a part of The Youth Center. I serve on a few of the board committees and it gives me insight to all the different areas that we are constantly improving and growing to better our programs, to make our board stronger and find ways to further serve our local community. Whenever we have an event where you hear the kids speak about how The Youth Center has impacted their lives and their families, you can't help but feel it touch your heart and be extremely proud of them and knowing you had a part in making that happen. The Youth Center equips our children with so much, whether it keeps them off the streets and out of trouble, helps them with challenges of school, or provides a place for them to foster new friendships, it is no doubt a special place that they will forever remember later in life. The Youth Center creates a foundation and environment to allow kids to grow in a safe place and become empowered with the skills they need to start off with in the real world. From a board member perspective, I have never been more proud to serve on a board of such amazing and giving whom I can call friends. Our strengths lie in pulling our gifts and resources together and we collaborate in such an effective way that strongly supports the staff and the programs they put together. The Youth Center is such an amazing example of one of the best nonprofits that I have ever had involvement with and I cannot express the gratitude and pride I have for this organization.

To whom it may concern,
My son has been attending a homework program at the youth center in Los Alamitos. It has made life at home completely different. I can actually enjoy quality time with my son instead of arguing with him to do his homework and feeling helpless when I'm unable to help him. Kashen like many other kids comes from a divorced family so it has been a blessing for him to a stable homework place and person (Jay) to help him. Kashen has struggled with his grades always and I am happy to say I looked at his grades and he has 4 As and 2 Bs I attribute that to his after school homework program It also has also helped Kashen with self confidence and his anxiety has gone down tremendously because he is organized. Life changing!!!!! Thank you,

In addition to 20 years of science teaching I had ran science-based summer camps. My graduate research focus was on shark behavior.

I have come full circle and I am doing what I love again - running camps for kids.

The Youth Center is a truly unique charitable organization. It's history is inspiring. What is most impressive is the work that is done every day with the same goal - to engage kids and provide programs that fascinate and educate.

Seeing the impact a death (during the Every 15 Minutes program) had not only on the child but on so many other people really put into perspective the ripple effect that kind of death has. It showed me that if I were to die, it wouldn't be just me that would be dying. My parents, friends, and anyone who cares at all would also be affected by a horrific event like this. So many people's lives are affected, which made me understand how selfish it is to drink and drive.

There were so many things that impacted me about Every 15 Minutes program. The things that made me cry so much were when I heard my obituary being read out loud to my class and watching the students and my teacher cry. When we wrote letters to our parents at the end of the night, it was so emotional. Reading the one my dad wrote to me was heartbreaking. Seeing my tombstone the next day with flowers and letters and pictures and things really hit me. This program impacted people so much and it broke my heart. It's such an important program and I'm so happy to have been involved. Listening to the guest speaker really showcased the reality of this program. Siting with each other lighting the candles was so amazing and great to hear us all speak and reflect. It really brought us all so close. I consider all of these kids my best friends now and I love them all. Watching the trial literally took my breath away. Hearing parents make impact statements about their kids is something I will never forget.

Five years ago I began working with a Board member to raise funds during their annual campaign drive. At the time I was amazed at the services they offered to the community and how the community in turn appreciated and supported their work.
Three years ago I began working for the Youth Center part time and am now a full time employee.
I am proud to be a part of this organization and feel blessed to work with such caring and hard-working individuals. I am very thankful for all of the parents, businesses and community members that support the Youth Center's many initiatives by giving of themselves both in time and funding. I am very glad I was part of Every 15 Minutes program. It was an amazing experience that I will always remember. The program taught me to appreciate everything and everyone because anything can change everything in your life in a split second. It showed me that drinking and driving is never worth it because one dumb decision can change the life of myself and others around me. This is an amazing program that should be run at every school and everyone should have the opportunity to experience this.

Every 15 Minutes program was an incredible experience. The hardest part was watching my child become extremely emotional and writing her obituary and good bye letter. Very moving experience. I watched the student population during the accident and during the Friday assembly. Every single student was riveted and visibly moved. I believe the program was highly effective. This program was life changing for all involved. While it was emotional and exhausting, i know that it was worth it by possibly saving a life. Thank you to all who participated and coordinated this incredible event. As a parent in our community, I applaud your efforts to save the children's lives in our community.

Elise has so many wonderful memories from Teen Camp. I was very happy to know that the Youth Center offers this for the teens. I think it was very good for her and all the campers. Elise looked forward to going every day and I was happy that she was able to get to go to so many fun field trips, and do so many different activities. She loved it.

Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU to everyone who works at the Youth Center. My daughter loves Music Classes. She always wanted to play a musical instrument but was afraid to fail. She decided to play saxophone this year. She met new friends, and now can play a few songs on saxophone! She is so happy about it and very proud of her achievement. I just want to tell thank you to all everyone who helps with Music Program. It's very affordable, doesn't require private classes and her instructor is ridiculously good! Thank you for making my daughter have more confidence and new friends. I am telling all my friends about your music program.

The Every 15 Minutes Program was literally life changing. Everyone has said that, but it's so true. I loved how it effected so many people and touched everyone in different ways. One of my favorite parts was how close everyone in the program got. It just shows how impactful it was that we were able to lean on and cry with people that we had only known for a few hours. I wish everyone at our school had an opportunity to do it! It was definitely the best experience of my life.

As a past Board President (twice) and a past Chairman of the Annual Support Campaign(twice), I have a great love and passion for the Youth Center , and the many wonderful things it does for the youth in the community. Being on the Board for over 25 years has opened my eyes to the great job the Youth Center does for the youth in the community with such a small budget, compared to most Non-Profits. This is high-lighted by just one of their many programs, the Music Program. It was taken over by the Youth Center over 20 years ago, when the School District ran out of money to fund it in the Elementary Schools. It continues to get bigger and better each year allowing the kids to play musical instrument s at a very young age. David Appling Sr

Outstanding local nonprofit that serves hundreds of kids on a regular basis. Kids love being at the center. For many of them the Youth Center is a second home. I work at the Youth Center for over 8 years and see kids grow with us. They come back to volunteer and share their stories. The Youth Center makes a difference in this community. We are blessed with wonderful volunteers and supporters... anyone who is interested in giving back their time - this is a fun place to do it!

As a past child participant to the Youth Center ,a donor and a past Board Member, I have strong feelings towards both the need for and the continual support that this Center brings to the Youth in our community. Our two sons attended the Youth Center Summer Camp and one of them volunteered his late weekend nights to help run the safe rides program which gives any child a safe ride home if caught in an unsafe or uncomfortable situation. Our community is not known for its high education standards and youth involvement for nothing. The Youth Center has and continues to play a key role in the formation of both of these key elements in creating a strong backbone for our young youth to become solid young adults in the short years to come.

The Youth Center is more than a safe place for children to go after school to do homework there are numerous programs afterschool, events, summer program, and more. I am honored to be a part of the Youth Center Board and one of the programs closest to my heart is the---EVERY 15 MINUTES Program-----this is a LIFE changing program....a dynamic, reality-based program that strips the innocence and coolness away from drinking and driving. This two-day program focuses on high school juniors and seniors and challenges them to think about drinking, personal safety, driving habits and the responsibility of making mature decisions. The program name was conceived from the statistic that every fifteen minutes someone in the United States dies in an alcohol related traffic accident. This program, was first delivered to Los Alamitos High School students in the spring of 1999, and is typically presented every other year. EVERY 15 MINUTES APPLICATIONS DUE ON NOV. 30, 2012 To apply, visit The Youth Center website at: http://www.theyouthcenter.org/every_15_min_registration.htm

Our community enjoys a youth population extraordinarily free of negative behavior. There are many reasons for this including engaged parents and an excellent school district. But at the core of this is a little organization with a big mission...the Youth Center. It provides character-building, values-oriented activities for young people after school. During my 25+ years in the nonprofit, youth development field I have never witnessed an organization that does so much with so little!

My son & daughter went to the Youth Center during middle & high school (including Friday Night Lights in the early 90's). Then they did volunteer activities during high school (including Safe Rides). Our family valued those experiences, and so I volunteered to help the Youth Center now that I am retired, since it provides valuable services and experiences for our community's young people.

The Youth Center is an outstanding place for youth to come after school to do homework, study with friends and of course have fun in a safe environment! I started coming to The Youth Center at a young age and I met new friends and learned lifelong lessons from the staff and volunteers. The Youth Center is a life changing organization that effects so many children in the Los Alamitos and surrounding area. It is a center full of kids that come every day. Everyone knows everyone and everyone gets along. As an adult now I still remember and won’t forget everything The Youth Center has done for me.

I first became associated with the Youth Center when I volunteered there while I was in high school. This organization is such a blessing to the many communities and families it serves. By being involved with the organization I too have been blessed for giving back. The Youth Center is a wonderful non-profit organization that cares about the community, and not only gives kids a safe and supervised place to go everyday after school, but helps parents to be able to work a full day. The after school program runs from 2-6pm every school day and is free. The Youth Center also provides other services to the community such as a Safe Rides program and a Summer Camp program. The Youth center has established some annual practices such as a Spring Pledge Drive, Haunted House, Christmas Tree lot, and Comedy night to generate revenue. I did a number of stories on the Youth Center when I was out in California. Tom and Lina have nothing but the best interest of the kids in mind. It is a safe, welcoming haven where children can get help with homework, play games, grab a snack and simply be kids. I was so enthralled with the organization I wanted to be a board member but we couldn't get the scheduling worked out.

Quality programs include free after school program, learning center, gymnastics, cheer, special needs cheer, summer day camp, summer teen camp, safe rides, every 15 minutes, music & award winning orchestra. The Youth Center is a true asset to our community that proved it over and over again for the past 58 years.
