Causes: Crime & Law
Mission: The Sixth Amendment Center seeks to ensure that no person faces the prospect of time in jail without the aid of a lawyer with the time, ability and resources to present an effective defense, as required under the United States Constitution. We do so by measuring public defense systems against established standards of justice. When shortcomings are identified, we help states and counties make their courts fair again in ways that promote public safety and fiscal responsibility.
Results: Provide technical assistance and evaluation in numerous states, including Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Utah. Publish reports on states' indigent defense systems; published a white paper on early appointment of counsel in conjunction with the Pretrial Justice Institute (2014).
Target demographics: ensure everyone has a fair day in court
Geographic areas served: states across the United States
Programs: technical assistance and research into states' indigent defense systems
