Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Human Services, Senior Centers, Seniors, Transportation Assistance

Mission: The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond is a non-profit service and educational organization for people over 50. It is is not a place or a building. It is people of retirement age who participate in programs of mutual interest and who help their neighbors through volunteer service. The Shepherd's Center is a successful and inspiring model of just how resourceful a group of retired men and women can be. Our mission is to encourage older adults to remain active and independent through enrichment programs and volunteer service to their peers.

Results: This last year (June 1,2015-May 30 2016), approximately 80 volunteer drivers provided 200 clients with almost 1.400 round trip rides to medical appointments and grocery stores. These drivers spent roughly 2,840 hours and travelled more than 16,000 miles, making it possible for Richmond seniors (average age 75) to remain healthy and independent. The Center’s Open University (OU) offers almost limitless opportunity for intellectual challenge and for social interaction for seniors. The OU meets in two Richmond churches. Three 8-week sessions in the fall, winter, and spring feature well-qualified instructors, many of whom are active or retired faculty members from area colleges and universities. All instructors volunteer their time. Programs at the two sites differ. Fall session begins September 19, 2016.

The Shepherd's Center of Richmond (TSCOR) is an amazing organization of volunteers. It is the best lifelong learning organization around in terms of value and variety of classes and lecturers.
In a nutshell, it's fun, fellowship and stimulation.
