Causes: Crime & Law, Inmate Support
Mission: The petey greene program supplements education in correctional institutions by preparing volunteers, primarily college students, to provide free, quality tutoring and related programming to support the academic achievement of incarcerated people. The petey greene program will be the national leader of quality tutoring and related educational services to support incarcerated students in achieving their academic goals. The petey greene volunteer experience will inspire our alumni to advocate and take on leadership roles that will re-imagine the criminal justice system. We envision a world in which all incarcerated people have access to high quality academic programs.
Programs: In 2017, the petey greene program recruited, trained, coordinated and supported 892 volunteers in 8 states (massachusetts, rhode island, connecticut, new york, new jersey, pennsylvania, virginia and maryland). The program created or maintained partnerships with 42 correctional facilities and had volunteers who attended 31 universities. Petey greenes volunteers completed more than 11,000 hours of volunteer tutoring and assisting professors within incarcerated classrooms. A high quality education equips students with the critical thinking and self-reflection skills necessary to create positive change for themselves, their communities, and our society as a whole. Finally, the program has a similarly valuable impact on volunteers. Volunteers tutoring experiences consistently spark interest in criminal justice and education policy, prompt volunteers to encourage political and social engagement on their campuses and in their communities, and ultimately inspire volunteers to pursue careers as teachers, lawyers, advocates, and policymakers.
